The work Translational aspects in Ma vie ne sait pas nager by Élaine Turgeon approaches the entire translation process of this francophone children's work. The theme choice was due to the interest in deepening the translational knowledge, in addition to performing an analysis of the own translation work done. Thus, the theoretical aspects related to the translation are reported throughout the work, a succinct exhibition of the history of translation, a brief view of the children's editorial market (in the world and more specifically in Brazil), the book theme and author style, and finally, the drawbacks overcome during the realization of the work - based upon the theoretical body of work consulted - and the solution encountered for this. At the end of this same work, some considerations are drawn, as well as some reflections upon the translation realized (with the studied texts attached in the body of work); accompanied by some findings observed concerning the theoryO trabalho Aspectos tradutórios em Ma vie ne sait pas nager de Élaine Turgeon aborda todo o processo de tradução dessa obra infantojuvenil francófona.
This thesis examines how Cajuns are keeping the tradition of the “Courir du Mardi Gras” alive in a perspective of sustainable development of their heritage through the case study of the Courir of Faquetaique. After a presentation of the Cajun Mardi Gras, the Faquetaique run is put in context, as it detaches itself from other Courirs considered more touristic or commercial. Drawing from participant observations of the event and interviews with participants, this research analyzes the organization and some specific aspects of the Faquetaique run. Through the perspective of the criteria of a sustainable development of heritage proposed by the ICOMOS, in 2011, our analysis concludes that it is not so much the local and geographical character that defines, in the eyes of the participants, the Faquetaique run, but, rather, the “spirit of place” that takes place and the people, or community, by which it is performed. These actors show how they consciously develop this tradition by inscribing it into continuity
The Tortoise and the Hare
This is a sturdy small (7 x 5) board book with five double-sided interior pages. Baby Bear narrates. Mayor Piggy starts the race. The rabbit tires himself out. Result of the race? The Hare has kept his mouth shut to this very day. I wonder if there are other books in this series. It seems as though the book may be coordinated with a tape, disk, or website, since the back cover says Press Baby Bear's toes when you see a [pawprint] and he will read you the story of the Tortoise and the Hare! This is a hardbound book (hard cover)La Fontain
The Right to Privacy in the Private Sector: What is at Stake for Historians and Historical Research
During the past year, numerous events have focused public attention on the right to privacy. Editorials and headlines have paid considerable attention to a Supreme court ruling limiting the right to photograph individuals in public places, and to a lengthy legal battle between author Pierre Turgeon and the heirs of a prominent Quebec businessman over the deceased’s right to privacy
A CROSS-CULTURAL ANALYSIS of CAMPUS RAPE CULTURE
This honors research thesis is an exploratory analysis of campus rape culture at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA. Through the use of twenty in-depth interviews at each university, the author explores the dynamics that create campus rape culture, such as gender relations, social activities, and gendered living environments. Observations present an interesting array of students\u27 perspectives on the culture in which they live and how this affects their daily academic and social lives. The author\u27s exploration and analysis leads her to the creation of a model in which sexism leads to raunch culture, male domination, and single-sex living environments intermingle to produce campus rape culture. These findings suggest several separate but related avenues in which prevention efforts to end violence against women on college campuses can be employed. The author concludes with her personal and professional recommendations on how to make college campuses a safer environment with a stronger support system for victims of sexual violence
Once Upon a Time, There was Me; Constructing and Deconstructing Narratives to Make and Remake Knowledge, Worlds and Futures
This paper acknowledges the importance of self-constructed narratives in curriculum and encourages ways of learning through story making. By the term story making I mean (re) writing the stories and also (re) designing physically their medium, while applying our personal experiences in them. These self-constructed narratives might be stories that children write from the beginning or by deconstructing and reconstructing existing stories. In the second case, existing stories are brought back to life being rewritten by allowing children’s input. Story making could not only be used to enhance children’s learning, but also as a platform for design, while children also (re) design the medium of the story. Making/designing is used primarily as a process, helping to get ideas for the writing of the story and finally as an outcome by redesigning the story. Having entered into fantasy we are able to have a better grip of reality and realize the design possibilities. By applying their innate fantasy and creativity, children could challenge the conventional perception of ‘how things look’. Story making and fantasy can then be used to design futures and come across new worlds. I will analyze workshops I have conducted; case studies from schools, which explore the interconnections of story making, learning and designing and also an outline study that I am currently working with. Through these cases, I am exploring how the role of teacher and learner, author and reader, designer and client can be reversed. This process not only might help children to acquire design and writing skills, but also fosters dialogue over children’s and story’s ethics. The educator/designer/researcher has a role of facilitator in order to assist them through the process
This essay explores the semantic field of a particular thing, the garden gnome, by analyzing the contents of fifty Internet sites. This thing-as-subject hides, behind a satisfied beard, many faces... The author describes ambivalent constructions that seem sometimes exploded, chaotic, without any sense. But the garden gnome's significations would be in fact cumulative: they are presented as a patchwork of possibilities. Semi-poetry, semi-insult, the garden gnome is both therapy and syndrome of a « difference » that is born from the nonsense of the life and death, that is born from the secret of happiness and the materiality's mystery. The garden gnome is high in symbolism, in spite of its unimportance. Even if the object is silent, we can hear in it the noise of the contemporaneity. And it smiles
Evolution in biocontrol strains: insight from the harlequin ladybird Harmonia axyridis
After being used as a biocontrol agent against aphids for decades without harmful consequences, the Asian harlequin ladybird Harmonia axyridis has suddenly become an invasive pest on a worldwide scale. We investigate the impact of captive breeding on several traits of this ladybird such as genetic diversity, fecundity, survival and pathogen resistance. We conducted an experiment in the laboratory to compare the fecundity and the susceptibility to the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana of wild and biocontrol adults of H. axyridis. We compiled these new findings with already published data. Altogether, our findings suggest that mass rearing of biological control agents may strongly impact genetic diversity and life-history traits. We discuss how such changes may subsequently affect the fitness of biological control strains in natural environments
