This memorandum dated February 21, 1955, from unknown author to United States (US) Senator William Langer, written on US Senate memorandum stationery, reads: Senator: Mr. Chumbers [sic] called, said he has talked to Commissioner Emmons, but Mr. Emmons has been unable to clear with the Secretary of the Interior as to the Federal government\u27s reimbursing the State of N. Dak. for their expenses. Because of the Holiday tomorrow, he may not get a report from the Secretary before Thursday. Mr. Chumbers most likely refers to Pete Chumbris, to whom other documents in the Langer papers of this period refer. Commission Emmons most likely refers to Glenn L. Emmons, Commissioner of the United States (US) Bureau of Indian Affairs. Challenging impunity in northern Uganda : the tension between amnesties and the principle of international criminal responsibility

Thesis (LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)) -- University of Pretoria, 2007.A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Law University of Pretoria, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Masters of Law (LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa). Prepared under the supervision of Dr Ben Kiromba Twinomugisha of the Faculty of Law, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. This dissertation intends to analyse the practice of amnesties in the context of grave human rights violations using northern Uganda as a case study. It also examines its consistency with the obligation upon states to protect human rights through the prosecution of perpetrators of the said violations. It will, accordingly, analyse the implications of the complementary mandate of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to national jurisdictions. Furthermore, the author also explores the tension which results from national amnesties and the principle of international criminal responsibility, a principle that the ICC has the mandate to enforce.http://www.chr.up.ac.zaCentre for Human RightsLL

Hz. Muhammed'in Peygamberliğini Kabul Eden Yahudi Âlim: Natanel ben Feyyûmî

    No full text
Natanel ben Feyyûmî is one of the leaders of the 12th century Yemen Jewish community and his work named Bustânu'l-Ukûl has survived to the present day. In this work, Feyyûmî talks about different issues such as the unity of God, worshiping him, the hereafter, repentance and the coming of the Messiah. The author also emphasizes that the Torah is not abrogated and keeps its validity. While doing this, he refers to the Quranic verses. One of the points the author emphasizes is that Allah sends a guide for every community in every period. In this framework, he sees Muhammad as a prophet sent by Allah to the Arabs. Claiming that Muhammad’s prophethood was limited to Arabs, Feyyûmî said that the Jews have no necessity to believe the shariah brought by Muhammad. The author shares verses from the Quran in order to support this claim and he tries to prove that Muhammad was sent only to the Arabs. Feyyûmî, in the Jewish tradition, emerges as an exceptional personality who accepts that Muhammad is a prophet sent by God. Today’s researchers think that the basis of thought of Feyyûmî is the influence of Ismaili thought. For, according to the Ismaili thought, God sends a prophet or a guide to every nation in every period. In this context, Hz. Muhammad was also sent to the Arabs and his prophethood is valid only for Arabs

Vertical Movements and Petroleum System Modelling in the Southern Chotts Basin, Central Tunisia

    No full text
The southern Chotts basin (SCB), Central Tunisia, has shown hydrocarbon potential since the end of the 1980s. This basin records a complex structural history which appears decoupled at the Hercynian or Variscan unconformity. The Paleozoic series is deformed by short to medium wavelength folds (kilometres-multi kilometres scale) and by steep normal faults. The Mesozoic series is largely less deformed. The evolution of the basin through time is still a matter of debate as the preserved Paleozoic series is fragmented (e.g. affected by erosions). In this paper, we proposed a reconstruction of the vertical movements affecting the basin and an evaluation of their magnitude. Using basin modelling techniques, we provided new insights on the possible thermal evolution of the basin that might be used in the future exploration phases. This study was completed by structural restorations allowing the reconstruction of the paleogeography of the basin at the time of deposition of principal reservoir formations.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Geolog

    Cult: A Composite Novel

    No full text
Cult (redacted) The first component of the thesis is a composite novel called Cult which falls into two parts with seven narratives in each. Part 1 tracks the protagonist, Ellen, from her first involvement with the cult through to her eventually leaving it. Although fiction, the first half of the book answers the kinds of questions the author is asked when people discover that she was once a sannyasin (a follower of the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). While the experiences of meditation, group therapy and communal living are all faithfully rendered within the stories, the need for strong characters, narrative drive and a lightness of touch takes precedence. Part 2 picks up Ellen’s story some twenty or so years later and explores what becomes of her in middle age. It also looks at other groups in society, such as academia, the law and the internet dating community which each have their own jargon, hierarchies, rituals and rules but are not considered to be cults. The book examines the question raised in the Epigraph, ‘how do we be together when we feel so alone’ with a focus on relationships other than the familial and the romantic. Collisions, Chasms and Connections: a Performative Exploration of the Composite Novel Form The second part of the thesis is both a critical and creative response to three contemporary American books: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout; A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; and Legend of a Suicide by David Vann. The critical element comprises a close reading of the three books; a chronological reconstruction of their overarching storylines; and a consideration of what their authors have said about writing the books. It concludes that, in the composite novel, the simultaneous presentation of multiple views and storylines operate much like a 3D image to give the impression of depth to the characters and situations rendered. The creative element of the essay is a playful and personal response to the texts

Asjsa Honors Ben Bagdikian as Journalism's ‘Most Perceptive Critic’

    No full text
Ben H. Bakdikian, reporter, editor and contributor to many national magazines, was cited as “journalism's most perceptive critic” at the annual awards luncheon sponsored by the American Society of Journalism School Administrators during the 1978 convention of the Association for Education in Journalism in Seattle. The citation was presented before a standing-room-only crowd by Joe W. Milner of Arizona State University, 1977–78 president of ASJSA. Currently a professor of journalism at the University of California at Berkeley, Bagdikian has been a newsman since he began with the Springfield (Mass.) Morning Union in 1941. He was on the staff of the Providence (R. I.) Journal and Bulletin for 15 years. Bagdikian's interest as a media critic soared in the 1960s when he became a contributing editor to the Saturday Evening Post. He was later assistant managing editor and ombudsman for the Washington Post. Bagdikian's nomination for the ASJSA award stated that he has demonstrated in many ways the necessity of critical evaluation of the performance of all those associated with journalism. “Though many may disagree with his assessments,” the nomination said, “few can fail to react in some way to his judgments concerning the press and its practitioners.” A spokesman for press councils, Bagdikian was project director for the three-year study on newspaper survival sponsored by the Merkle Foundation. The Pulitzer Prize winner is also author of five books, including The Information Machines: Their Impact on Men and the Media. </jats:p
