Microeconomic Evidence on Price-Setting
No full textThe last decade has seen a burst of micro price studies. Many studies analyze data underlying national CPIs and PPIs. Others focus on more granular sub-national grocery store data. We review these studies with an eye toward the role of price setting in business cycles. We summarize with ten stylized facts: Prices change at least once a year, with temporary price discounts and product turnover often playing an important role. After excluding many short-lived prices, prices change closer to once a year. The frequency of price changes differs widely across goods, however, with more cyclical goods exhibiting greater price flexibility. The timing of price changes is little synchronized across sellers. The hazard (and size) of price changes does not increase with the age of the price. The cross-sectional distribution of price changes is thick-tailed, but contains many small price changes too. Finally, strong linkages exist between price changes and wage changes.
Chester Price
No full textNot much is known about Chester Price, but he was cousin to Billy and Everett Price who were important sources for Sandy Ives as well as Louise Manny’s work in the Miramichi area. The Price cousins descended from a musical family, including their grandfather Abraham Munn, a singer and song-writer in his own right. Chester sang only one song for Sandy Ives, “Benjamin Deane,” and it was almost by accident that he was even at Billy’s house to begin with. No full textThis paper was presented at the conference "Economic Statistics: New Needs for the Twenty-First Century," cosponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth, and the National Association for Business Economics, July 11, 2002. The main objective of this paper is to make a start in the evaluation of price hedonics. The author describes the hedonic model and reviews its main uses, because the credibility of price hedonics depends in part on the current state of academic research. This is a brief overview.
