Seeking Margaret Baker: Identifying the Author of Three Manuscript Receipt Books
This paper uses recipe contributors named in three early modern manuscript receipt books (Sloane MS 2485, Sloane MS 2486 and Folger V.a 619) to identify the author as Margaret Baker, daughter of Richard Baker the Chronicler (c.1568-1645) and Margaret Mainwaring (died c.1652). A familial connection is also made to Wellcome MS 212. The Margaret Baker example is used to argue for the necessity of identifying a broader range of receipt, or recipe, book writers in order to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of recipe book production, and their social context. In the case of Margaret Baker, additional information about her family background, marital status and age at the time of writing the books both shed light on the recipes included in the book, and raise new questions about her culinary and medical practices

Constructing a crisis: the role of immigration detention in Malta
Malta remains the only country in the European Union that maintains an 18-month, mandatory detention policy for all irregular migrants upon arrival. This paper examines the role that detention has played in the Maltese government's response to the flows of irregular immigration to the island in the 21st century. It argues that detention is symbolic of the crisis narrative that the Maltese government has constructed as a response to these immigration flows in order to gain more practical and financial support from the European Union. The detention policy also serves to reinforce this interpretation of irregular immigration. Such a portrayal, combined with the use of detention as a deterrent, produces detrimental consequences for the migrant population, as well as the wider Maltese society. The paper draws on over 50 interviews, conducted by the author, with government officials, non-governmental organisations, and migrants and refugees on the island
From meiwaku to tokushita!: lessons for digital money design from japan
Based on ethnographically-inspired research in Japan, we report on people’s experiences using digital money payment systems that use Sony’s FeliCa near-field communication smartcard technology. As an example of ubiquitous computing in the here and now, the adoption of digital money is found to be messy and contingent, shot through with cultural and social factors that do not hinder this adoption but rather constitute its specific character. Adoption is strongly tied to Japanese conceptions of the aesthetic and moral virtue of smooth flow and avoidance of commotion, as well as the excitement at winning something for nothing. Implications for design of mobile payment systems stress the need to produce open-ended platforms that can serve as the vehicle for multiple meanings and experiences without foreclosing such possibilities in the name of efficiency. Winners and Losers: Origin and Success of the Antiperonist Coalition within the Armed Forces against the Peronist Regime (1946-1955)
This paper aims to describe the causes and mechanism that explain why the antiperonist coalition constituted at the end of 1954 could successfully put to an end the Peronist regime in 1955. For this, it utilizes Scott Mainwaring y Aníbal Pérez Liñán’s theory of political regimes change (2013) through process tracing. This explanation establishes that the stability of a political regime depends on the amount of opposition actors in the coalition against it as a consequence of their level of political radicalization, their normative references and the international context. In this case, the preferences radicalization in conjunction with the normative preferences against the political regime were the crucial variables which explained the behavior of the main opposition actors within the Armed Forces.Fil: García Holgado, Benjamín Armando Luis. Exploring using NVivo software to facilitate inductive coding for thematic narrative synthesis
BackgroundThe author conducted a review on how power and hierarchy affect staff safety in maternity services, using a narrative synthesis of staff voices from relevant literature. The review was coded using NVivo software. This article aims to evaluate NVivo as a tool for thematic narrative synthesis.MethodsSelected papers were coded inductively using NVivo software, a subjective idealist approach to knowledge where iteration is achieved at the coding and synthesis stages of the process.ResultsNVivo proved to be a versatile tool; the imported files could be word or pdf, the import tab made it possible to upload images and audio files and information could be transferred from OneNote, Outlook and bibliographic software such as Endnote and RefWorks. NVivo software provided numerous options to explore data within different tabs. Users could create relationships between files and there were opportunities to display the findings in word clouds, hierarchies and clusters.ConclusionsNVivo was a user-friendly tool for a novice user, facilitating coding for thematic narrative synthesis. A discussion of the review findings were explored in a previous article.</div
