Benjamin Johnson informs Thomas Rotch that he and family are on their way to Ohio country to inspect land near Kendal owned by his Philadelphia neighbor Furman Laming, for possible homesteading. Much of the most fertile land in New England and Pennsylvania by this time had been bought up and turned to the plough, whereas some land in Ohio was still affordable. Johnson writes that he and wife and three children will cross the Ohio River at Charlestown (West Virginia), the journey will take about 2 weeks, traveling slowly as roads were atrocious, he is not certain he will make the Yearly Meeting of Friends at Mt Pleasant to meet up with Rotch. 6.7" x 8.1" (17 by 20.8 cm
