Translations from Yiddish of Polish-Lithuanian Authors. An Annotated Bibliography The article discusses the Italian bibliography prepared by the author of translations of Polish-Lithuanian Jews made from Yiddish. Firstly, the issue of national literature is tackled: it is argued that Polish literary field has been and still is multilingual and that it is a significant starting point for broader considerations. One of the possible perspectives concerns Jewish literary life in Poland. As a matter of fact, Jews, as well as their languages, were a crucial element of the cultural landscape of the country until WWII. In the last part of the article the criteria of selection are defined and some wider aspects of the Italian reception are presented, first of all its modesty

On the Reception of Ukrainian Literature in Poland (1989-2021): Contexts, Turning Points, Phenomena. The article explores the reception of translated Ukrainian literature in Poland over the last thirty years taking into consideration its systemic nature, political contexts and social background. From a methodological point of view the text is informed principally by polysystem theory, Bourdieu’s sociology and aesthetic of reception. Firstly, the author presents a brief overview of the reception of Ukrainian literature at the time of Socialist Poland which is indispensable for understanding later developments. Then, the statistical data are summarised considering separately works, writers, publishing houses, translators and the languages translated (mostly Ukrainian, but in a few cases also Russian). The whole thirty-year period under examination is divided into two distinct phases whose watershed is represented by the “orange revolution” in Ukraine in 2004-2005. The period between 1989 and 2004 witnessed a slow change due to the agency of a small group of cultural actors whose work countered the pre-existing stereotypes and promoted contemporary literature. The “orange revolution” has had a profound effect on Ukraine’s image in Poland and, moreover, has linked closely the reception of literary texts to political situation. In fact, it is argued that after 2004 large-scale political events in Ukraine have been the essential contexts for the reception of its literature, especially considering the authors and works being noticed on the Polish national market. After the “orange revolution” Ukrainian literature moved from a marginal position within the field to a more dynamic semiperipheral one it occupies today

Thesis: M. Eng., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2017.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (page 49).In this thesis, I look at multiple Variational Inference algorithm, transform Kalman Variational Bayes and Stochastic Variational Inference into streaming algorithms and try to identify if any of them work with non-stationary distributions. I conclude that Kalman Variational Bayes can do as good as any other algorithm for stationary distributions, and tracks non-stationary distributions better than any other algorithm in question.by Arsen Mamikonyan.M. What Films does Arsen Dedić Remember?

    No full text
In many of his songs, Arsen Dedić mentions or alludes to specific films. Starting with a connection between film and lyrics, the connection primarily found in their associative rhetoric, and its ties to the memory process, the author analyzes some of Dedić’s songs (»Moderato cantabile«, »Steamboat Rex«, »Original soundtrack«) and their relation towards the films that have inspired them or are mentioned in them. The author establishes that Dedić is most successful when referring to those films which powerfully stress the theme of memory, while through his verses he recreates the mood of a specific film, and describes some of the scenes in great detail. Also, the poet very often uses specific film titles as the tokens of memory of his own youth, as well as some elements that create a mood of nostalgia which is constantly on the verge of irony

Analysis of Albania’s Trade Direction: Is the Open Balkan a New Center of Gravity?

    No full text
Trade is considered one of the main drivers of a country’s economic growth and development. Therefore, a successful analysis that identifies the bilateral trade flows, their determinants, and the regional integration costs and benefits opens new horizons for international trade perspectives. This study examines the effects of new and existing regional agreements on the international trade patterns of Western Balkan countries based on the Albanian case. In this regard, an extended trade gravity model is applied with a panel data set of trade flows between Albania and 43 of its regional strategic partners during the period of 2008 to 2022. This work considers two different similarity indexes to explain the effect of the economic structures of partner countries on their trade volumes: the relative factor endowment and the absolute factor endowment. The first is used to test the Linder Hypothesis, and the latter is used to test the effect of similarity in economic size between trading partners. Empirical results indicate that the effect of the selected explanatory variables, such as transportation costs, economic size, economic strength, exchange rate, and their relative as well as absolute endowment, is within expectations. Unexpectedly, the domestic economic size and strength are found to be insignificant in explaining the import flows and inversely proportional to the exports of Albania. Finally, it is indicated that trade flows are clearly dependent on traditional ties rather than on new incentives like the Open Balkan, which cannot offer a new regional center of gravity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the gravity of the Open Balkan initiative has been tested for one of the participating countries. The study concludes that while the Open Balkan initiative shows potential, the Berlin Process remains a more reliable path toward EU integration for Albania

Eases and Difficulties of Talking to a Virtual Coach for Quitting Smoking and Becoming More Physically Active: A Mixed-Methods Analysis

    No full text
As the awareness of the risks of smoking tobacco increased, usage declined as people started to attempt to quit smoking more. Currently, a wide variety of mobile health (mHealth) applications focused on smoking cessation exist, however users commonly quit these applications over time. In the case of Sam, a conversational agent that plays the role of a virtual coach that helps people to quit smoking and become more physically active, it is still unclear what eases and difficulties users experience when talking to Sam and what others factors might play a role in this. Using a mixed-methods analysis of data, gathered from participants after using Sam, six themes were identified that could provide an insight into these eases and difficulties. The identified themes were conversations feel unnatural, conversations feel natural, clarity towards the user, comfortable to talk, ease of replying and conversations felt impersonal. Recommendations were given for each team on both what to possibly improve and what to leave unchanged. Though users were positive about talking to Sam in general, there still was room for improvement.CSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin

Pipeline Networks E-modelling Based on CityComTM Technology: Experience of Industrial Implementation for Large Water-supply Systems

    No full text
AbstractIn the article below the author describes best practices of his company's 25-years experience in the field of development and industrial implementation of complex corporate-level software systems for solutions to everyday production and planning tasks in water supply. All software systems described have been developed using the specialized CityCom™ platform that includes instrumentation tools not only for GIS-based inventory and hydro-modeling but also for dispatch management, accident localization control, providing events logs & analysis (flow parameters, damages, works, machinery usage, diagnostics), planning of capital repairs and etc.The basic principle underlying the software systems provided is the main tenet of informatics science: any data has to be identified and stored only once and in one place. So all of the CityCom™ corporate-level projects use a single corporate database that consist of hundreds of tables where all the data is stored in accordance with the above-mentioned principle. The feature of CityCom™ that appears to be most in demand is the ability to perform hydraulic modeling with no limits imposed on the following parameters: network dimension, number of loops, number of sources and pump stations working simultaneously. However, a key feature of CityCom™ hydro-modeling instrumentation is that it can be used not as «standalone» application but as an integral part of a complex system combining all aspects of water-supply enterprise data modeling solution. The economic advantages of its implementation are ensured by:- optimizing of pipeline networks topology and parameters (reconstructions and switching);- optimizing of hydraulic modes according to diurnal fluctuations of water consumption (dispatching of current switches and pump stations control);- reducing the number of accidents as well as defects and damages (10-12% per year during the first 5-6 years, then stabilizing) and as a result, reducing the cost of repairs;- reducing of potable water loss down to 5..6% of water supply volume;- improving ergonomics and staff productivity. All implementations for water supply and sewerage systems are located in Russia. Largest of them in terms of scale are in the cities (population / pipelines network length): Nizhny Novgorod (1.300.000/5.000km), Novokuznetsk (550.000/1.800km), Naberezhnye Chelny (530.000/ 1.400km), Yoshkar-Ola (270.000/1.300km).Payback of expenses for implementation of the above has made from 2 to 5 years

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, SELECTION EFFECTS AND PROMOTING THE CULTURE OF CONSTITUTIONALDEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC

    No full text
Having in mind the long evolution of constitutions and constitutional politics and the universal appeal of the process of the interplay between virtue and demagogy that occurs during presidential elections, the author touches on several topics. The first are the standard “dogmatic” comparative provisions regarding the election of the head of state which the author looks into through the constitutional-legal prism of the so called selection effect. As the institution of the president of the republic exists in many constitutions and is thus among the most significant institutionalized aspects of political and social life of every country, the author focuses on the extent in which that institution in the electoral context contributes to the affirmation of republicanism, democracy and public sphere. The author concludes that the election of presidents and the effects of electoral selection, among other things, affect the process of political integration that ought to – not only in Croatia but everywhere and due to a plethora of reasons – promote the universally accepted ontological principles of contemporary constitutional-democratic state

Constitutional basics and the problem of environmental protection in Croatian and European law

In this paper, the author points out a few questions which link the problem areas of the constitution with environmental protection. Is the problem area of the environment and its protection in itself an understandable and ‘natural’ topos of the constitution? Why and in what way have modern constitutions ‘become green’ and what constitutional and other legal problems have their creators faced? What role has the penetration of international and national constitutional law in this greening had and with what consequences? Why is it necessary to harmonise the values of the constitution and the environment? In this context, the author is especially interested in what way this problem area is resolved in the context of modern Croatian and European constitutional law
