Environmental awareness through mural art: a survey of iconographic representations of whales and polar bears on Italian walls
Marine plastic pollution is one of the most significant global challenges, with domestic waste, fishing nets, and microplastics contributing to the formation of plastic islands in seas and oceans. Other forms of oceanic and coastal pollution are caused by agriculture, sewage, urban areas, industrial discharge, oil spills, maritime traffic, and more. In response to this, a whole series of awareness and educational initiatives has aimed to highlight the threats faced by marine environments. Photojournalistic investigative projects, documentaries, videos produced by international organisations, and musical videos, among other artistic works, have tried to reshape how seascapes are perceived. Within the context of the relationship between geography and art, this contribution explores how artistic and creative actions, in particular through specific forms of muralism, have attempted to foster greater sensitivity towards the sea and the ocean within the Italian sphere. Adhering to the concept of popular culture as a means of disseminating environmental discourse, the research delves into the role of murals in shaping our perception of endangered seas and oceans, portraying seascapes in need of conservation. Through visual analysis and an iconographic approach, the article examines the portrayal of animals in artworks, emphasising how certain symbolic species (especially whales and polar bears) have become visual icons in promoting the conservation of seas and oceans. While the inclusion of such animals in artistic activism serves to evoke emotions and raise awareness of environmental issues, it also runs the risk of being criticised for oversimplification
Dark Matter in Fractional Gravity II: Tests in Galaxy Clusters
Recently, in Benetti et al. (Astrophys. J. 2023, 949, 65), we suggested that the dark matter (DM) component in galaxies may originate fractional gravity. In such a framework, the DM component exists, but the gravitational potential associated to its density distribution is determined by a modified Poisson equation including fractional derivatives (i.e., derivatives of noninteger type),
which are meant to describe nonlocal effects; as such, this scenario is different from theories where baryonic matter emulates DM-like effects via modifications of gravity (e.g., MONDian frameworks).
In Benetti et al., we showed that fractional gravity worked very well for reproducing the kinematics of disk-dominated galaxies, especially dwarfs; there is also preliminary evidence that the strength of fractional effects tends to weaken toward more massive systems. Here, we aim to test fractional
gravity in galaxy clusters, with a twofold aim: (i) perform an independent sanity check that it can accurately describe such large and massive structures; (ii) derive a clear-cut trend for its strength in systems with different DM masses. To this purpose, we forward model the density and pressure
distributions of the intracluster medium (ICM), working out the hydrostatic equilibrium equation in fractional gravity. Then, we perform a Bayesian analysis of the X-COP galaxy cluster sample and infer constraints on the fractional gravity parameters, for individual clusters as well as stacked
clusters. We find that fractional gravity performs remarkably well in modeling the ICM profiles for the X-COP sample. We also check that the DM concentration vs. mass relation is still consistent with the expectations of N-body simulations in the standard cosmological scenario. Finally, we
confirm the weakening of the fractional gravity effects toward more massive systems and derive the overall scaling of the fractional gravity parameters from dwarf galaxies to massive clusters, spanning six orders of magnitude in DM mass. Such an overall trend implies that fractional gravity
can substantially alleviate the small-scale issues of the standard DM paradigm, while remaining successful on large cosmological scales
Le «buone letture». 2. Giovanni Casati
The study consists of two parts; the first is dedicated to the history of the Federazione italiana delle biblioteche circolanti cattoliche since its foundation (1904) up to 1912 and was published in the previous volume of the «Nuovi Annali », XXVII (2013), pp. 137-163. In this second part, the author outlines the intellectual figure of Giovanni Casati, who directed the «Rivista di letture» from 1912 to 1944, transforming the magazine of the Federation in a journal engaged in the spreading of Catholic culture. To this militant engagement Casati matched an intense publishing program, which found its expression in the publication of literary essays, manuals and reference works
In the late medieval and humanistic novellas, owing to their very realistic character, the right is an important central and inevitable element in community life. Giovanni Sercambi’s novelliere is no exception even if the author lacks a legal culture, nor is specifically interested in right. This essay intends to analyze these novellas under this profile to verify what kind of right they consider and how the stories are enriched
