Conversando con... BENEDETTA TAGLIABUE
[EN] This interview was held as part of the 13th International Congress of Architectural Graphic Expression organised by the Valencia School of Architecture between 27 and 30 May 2010.
Benedetta Tagliabue has become one of the most renowned architects on the international sphere. The Spanish Pavilion for Expo Shanghai 2010 is one of her latest and more representative works. In this work, Benedetta Tagliaube highlights and develops a group of architectonic features which endorse the creativity of her work, present from the conception of the project and emphasised through t he combination of traditional
craftwork and innovative construction alternatives. Benedetta Tagliabue is a friendly lady, full of life and eager to keep working. Having travelled around the world countless times, she admits
that coming back to this oriental country always does her good and it has, once again, filled her with enthusiasm, revitalised her and given her energy to do “things”, many “things”…
One of the greatest qualities of Benedetta’s personality is her “creative intelligence”, which is reflected in her relentless search for new ideas. In this interview, Benedetta states that one should always experiment and be open to create. All her works reflect this approach, as well as a sort
Heteronomy of architecture: Un Dialogo di/A Dialogue of Matteo Ruta con/with Benedetta Tagliabue
I’m not calling today about the competition we are holding for Reinventing Cities here in Lambrate - I am calling to ask you if you would like it if we had a dialogue together on the Heteronomy of Architecture.
Benedetta Tagliabue: Hello Matteo! Don’t even talk about it, everything is so sad. You know just how important it is for me to travel and meet people all the time... in person.
Dialogue? Absolutely! But... what is this “heteronomy”? You don’t mean it’s something that excludes someone? You know I don’t like it...
M.R. Come on, we’ve known each other for years! Look, it’s exactly the opposite. A very interesting concept which Giancarlo De Carlo summed up well in a sentence I am going to read to you. «As you can tell as you listen, one cannot help but think of your way of knowing, investigating and reading the places and cities in which you design. It is also impossible not to think of how you live together with others, and how this has always been the way you live architecture on a daily basis, and how you know how to transmit it and build it together with all the people you meet: collaborators, citizens, users, clients, politicians, artists, producers of materials, craftsmen, friends, etc. [...]».
B.T. Oh well... I was actually joking a bit, you know it amuses me. I remembered this idea of Giancarlo’s from when I was studying at the Faculty of Architecture in Venice, and I was struck by his strength and energy in knowing how to interpret it at its best and translate it into splendid practice on many occasions.
Thank you also for your kind words, it was so kind of you to have thought of me. It certainly is an interesting theme to delve into in a monographic issue of a magazine, and I would like to congratulate those who thought of it.
So... Yes, I like it: let’s dialogue!
You already know that we’ll have to talk again a few times.
M.R. Of course I know... it’s always a great pleasure

Back of building facing Carrer Freixures; Located in Barcelona’s El Born district, the original structure dates back to 1845 when it was the Convent of Santa Maria. After a fire destroyed the convent, it was converted into the city’s first covered market in 1848. Some parts of the remaining apse of the monastery are exposed in the renovation, which also kept the original white masonry walls with multiple arched openings on three sides; the fourth side was opened to a plaza. The colorful undulating roof was added in the renovation, on steel struts over the older structure. The roof top is tiled with 325,000 hexagonal glazed tiles in a mosaic designed by artist Toni Comella, in vivid colors. Underneath the ceiling is wood, which ties in with the use of wood detailing throughout; much of the second story exterior is covered in awkwardly hung movable wood shutters, one of the many playful touches typical of an EMBT design. These forms are repeated in the surrounding social housing buildings that were also part of the urban renewal plan. Source: Buildipedia [website]; http://buildipedia.com (accessed 5/28/2013
