    Collective bargaining

    No full text
This chapter provides an overview of cross-national variation in the structure and strength of collective bargaining institutions. Several dimensions are compared, including the actors involved, the level of bargaining, the degree of coordination, and the mechanisms for extending collective agreements. The chapter then discusses the implications of collective bargaining for organizational and macroeconomic performance as well as for workers’ outcomes, including wage levels, job security and control of work. Past research shows that these effects depend on country and sector-specific bargaining rights and structures. Despite cross-national variation, in many countries collective bargaining has partly lost its ability to reduce wage inequality as a result of declining labour power vis-à-vis management.</p

Lights on 2,5-diaryl tetrazoles: applications and limits of a versatile photoclick reaction

    No full text
Recently, photoclick chemistry emerged as a powerful tool employed in several research fields, from medicinal chemistry and biology to material sciences. The growing interest in this type of chemical process is justified by the possibility to produce complex molecular systems using mild reaction conditions. However, the elevated spatio-temporal control offered by photoclick chemistry is highly intriguing, as it expands the range of applications. In this context, the light-triggered reaction of 2,5-diaryl tetrazoles with dipolarophiles emerged for its interesting features: excellent stability of the substrates, fast reaction kinetic, and the formation of a highly fluorescent product, fundamental for sensing applications. In the last years, 2,5-diaryl tetrazoles have been extensively employed, especially for bioorthogonal ligations, to label biomolecules and nucleic acids. In this review, we summarized recent applications of this interesting photoclick reaction, with a particular focus on biological fields. Moreover, we described the main limits that affect this system and current strategies proposed to overcome these issues. The general discussion here presented could prompt further optimization of the process and pave the way for the development of new original structures and innovative applications

On the relationship between mean and variance of world's human population density: A study using Taylor's power law

    No full text
Animal ecology has devoted a great deal of effort to the study of the relations between the variance (V) and the average (M) of the density of a group of sub-populations (pi) belonging to the same territorial system, and thus, it has been possible to develop several ‘laws’. Among these laws, one of the best known is Taylor’s power law (TL), which provides that between V and M, there is a power law. Several studies have appeared on this topic only recently in the field of human demography, mainly those of Cohen and colleagues. This is quite surprising given the extreme importance of the population density indicator in population studies. This paper, for the first time, tests the relations between V and M at the world level by working on the sub-populations (pi) resident in each country belonging to five continents and following a long-term perspective (1950–2017). To estimate the unknown parameters of the relation we make use a simultaneous equation system (SUR). The results show that TL is verified in two out of five cases (Asia, and America), while in three cases (Africa, Europe and Oceania), a quadratic relationship shows better results

Contesting firm boundaries: Institutions, cost structures, and the politics of externalization

    No full text
This article develops and applies a framework for analyzing the relationship among institutions, cost structures, and patterns of labor management contestation over organizational boundaries. Collective negotiations related to the externalization of call center jobs are compared across 10 incumbent telecommunications firms located in Europe and the United States. All 10 firms moved call center work to dedicated subsidiaries, temporary agencies, and domestic and offshore subcontractors. A subset of the firms, however, later re-internalized call center jobs, in some cases following negotiated concessions on pay and working conditions for internal workers. Findings are based on 147 interviews with management and union representatives, archival data on restructuring measures and associated collective agreements, and wage data gathered through collective agreements and surveys. The authors argue that variation in outcomes can be explained by both the extent of the cost differentials between internal and external labor and the ease of exiting internal employment relationships, which in turn affected patterns of contestation associated with externalization measures
