Role of vacuum fluctuation forces in thin metal film stability

    No full text
Thin metal films are subject to the pressure caused by the zero-point oscillations of the electromagnetic field, which depends upon the film optical properties and the substrate reflectivity. It has been suggested that the force may be relevant in determining the stability of deposited pseudomorphic films with respect to buckling or island formation. We present a detailed analysis of its behaviour as a function of the optical parameters and we illustrate the conditions under which it may play some role

The soil fauna of a perifluvial buffer of the Secchia river (Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna)

Analysis of the macrozoobenthic community within a perifluvial buffer zone of the River Secchia (northern Italy). In April 2018, a biological study of a foothill perifluvial buffer zone of the River Secchia at Tressano di Castellarano (province of Reggio Emilia) was carried out. First investigations focused on the macrozoobenthic community of a pond located within the study area. Benthic macroinvertebrates are considered excellent bioindicators of the quality of the aquatic environment: so, both the richness and abundance of species were assessed. In addition to the morphological determination of macroinvertebrates, quali-quantitative data underwent multivariate analyses. Finally, water chemical-physical parameters were recorded during the study. The preliminary data allowed a qualitative picture of the pond to be obtained, which can be useful for future environmental improvement projects

A study of the electromagnetic-fluctuation-induced forces on thin metallic films

Using the plasma model for the metal dielectric function we have calculated the electromagnetic fluctuation induced force of a free standing metallic film in vacuum as a function of the film size and plasma frequency. If the film is deposited onto a substrate or interacts with a plate, both the sign and the value of the force are modified. Il is shown that the force can change sign from attractice to repulsive upon changing the substrate plasma frequency

    Nanofriction in cold ion traps

Sliding friction between crystal lattices and the physics of cold ion traps are so far non-overlapping fields. Two sliding lattices may either stick and show static friction or slip with dynamic friction; cold ions are known to form static chains, helices or clusters, depending on the trapping conditions. Here we show, based on simulations, that much could be learnt about friction by sliding, through, for example, an electric field, the trapped ion chains over a corrugated potential. Unlike infinite chains, in which the theoretically predicted Aubry transition to free sliding may take place, trapped chains are always pinned. Yet, a properly defined static friction still vanishes Aubry-like at a symmetric–asymmetric structural transition, found for decreasing corrugation in both straight and zig-zag trapped chains. Dynamic friction is also accessible in ringdown oscillations of the ion trap. Long theorized static and dynamic one-dimensional friction phenomena could thus become accessible in future cold ion tribology

Lights on 2,5-diaryl tetrazoles: applications and limits of a versatile photoclick reaction

    No full text
Recently, photoclick chemistry emerged as a powerful tool employed in several research fields, from medicinal chemistry and biology to material sciences. The growing interest in this type of chemical process is justified by the possibility to produce complex molecular systems using mild reaction conditions. However, the elevated spatio-temporal control offered by photoclick chemistry is highly intriguing, as it expands the range of applications. In this context, the light-triggered reaction of 2,5-diaryl tetrazoles with dipolarophiles emerged for its interesting features: excellent stability of the substrates, fast reaction kinetic, and the formation of a highly fluorescent product, fundamental for sensing applications. In the last years, 2,5-diaryl tetrazoles have been extensively employed, especially for bioorthogonal ligations, to label biomolecules and nucleic acids. In this review, we summarized recent applications of this interesting photoclick reaction, with a particular focus on biological fields. Moreover, we described the main limits that affect this system and current strategies proposed to overcome these issues. The general discussion here presented could prompt further optimization of the process and pave the way for the development of new original structures and innovative applications

The efficacy of ibopamine in long-term treatment of dilated cardiomyopathy. A clinical and instrumental evaluation

The aim of this study was to investigate whether long-term treatment with ibopamine (SB-7505), the 3,4-diisobutyryl ester of N-methyldopamine, in patients with severe symptomatic congestive cardiomyopathy is associated with an improvement in cardiovascular conditions. The investigation was carried out in 18 outpatients with idiopathic or post-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy and chronic severe heart failure (NYHA (New York Heart Association) Class III-IV). Patients were randomly assigned to a protocol in which either digitalis and diuretis (8 patients, Group 2) or the same treatment plus ibopamine (10 patients, Group 1) were given. There were no significant differences between the two groups in age, weight, height, functional class and duration of symptoms. The results obtained showed that cardiovascular conditions worsened dramatically in the group of controls during the 10-week period, irrespective of the treatment with digitalis and diuretics. Some of the parameters deteriorated significantly (p < 0.05 or < 0.01) such as systolic and diastolic left ventricular diameters, fractional shortening, end-systolic stress and pressure/diameter ratio, and other parameters showed a tendency to become worse (exercise time, cardiothoracic ratio). On the contrary, in patients of group 1, ibopamine in association with digitalis and diuretics appeared to preserve left ventricle function from a progressive worsening. None of the parameters deteriorated with ibopamine by contrast with a sharp decrease in the control group. Some of the parameters (fractional shortening, pressure/diameter ratio, exercise time) showed a tendency to improve although not significantly. The data suggest that 10 weeks treatment with ibopamine may prevent any deterioration or even produce a mild improvement in patients with very severe congestive heart failure
