Patrick Heron, Felicitas Vogler, Leslie Martin, Andras Kalman, and Angela Verren each reminisce about Ben Nicholson whom Heron claims "was the greatest English painter since Turner". Heron talks about the "small paintings" of Nicholson’s last years which "looked like Indian ink and 6B pencil", and "the configuration [of which] was new … there’s nothing more difficult than to discover a new way of dividing up this rectangle … [Nicholson] was breaking new ground…". Andras Kalman talks about Nicholson’s work before 1933 and his ability to alternate abstraction with more representational images; he feels that, in the abstract painting, "the placing of the colours, the lines, have a perfection and an elegance which doesn’t appear in either Mondrian or Braque or Picasso … a unique contribution to twentieth century art". Commentary notes that Nicholson died before completing his last work, "a thirty-foot wall, built in Carrara marble, and based on one of his famous white reliefs", the Nicholson Wall, at Sutton Place, Surrey. Patrick Heron. Interviewed by John Read
Caption: "This interview took place in Patrick Heron’s studio in St. Ives, Cornwall, in September 1984. The main subject was the work of Ben Nicholson and parts are included in the Arts Council Film ‘Ben’, directed by John Read on the life of Ben Nicholson." Patrick Heron talks about his connection with St. Ives to which his family first moved in 1925; gives some of his family background; about some drawings from the early period, one similar to those painted later by Alfred Wallis who first came to St. Ives in 1928. About Ben Nicholson first meeting Wallis, the influence of Wallis’s work on him; descriptions of Wallis’s use of colour, typical of the British avant-garde movement. Heron talks about "education" for painting, best done by painters looking at other people’s paintings. Influences on Nicholson: his father, Winifred Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth. The arbitrary distinctions between figurative and non-figurative painting. Heron on Nicholson’s "white reliefs", intended to eliminate figuration; "with time, certain associations accrue to these images"; images are "read back into reality"; facts are relative in their significance and mean different things at different times. The influence on the design world of Nicholson’s organisation of pure circles with pure rectangles. Heron on Nicholson’s "line", comparing him favourably with Mondrian. Heron can’t identify only a single paramount quality in Nicholson’s work. Talks about seeing a seven-foot late Picasso alongside a similarly-dimensioned Nicholson he hadn’t seen before, which he thought "slightly overwhelmed the Picasso". On Nicholson’s Swiss period, returning to reliefs and mixing different periods. He believes that the two last exhibitions were full of new and "fantastically inventive" work, breaking new ground. Heron on his comparison between Nicholson and Joan Miró. Talks about Nicholson being very depressed because of the way he was more or less ignored by the Press, and couldn’t sell his work; that he only started to sell in Switzerland. Nurturing Talent. Final Report (full report and appendices
Widening Participation in Higher Education requires effective interaction between higher education institutions and under-represented communities. Such interaction has traditionally taken the form of outreach events/school visits by the university aimed at promoting engagement, or one-off visits by a few selected ‘master class’ students to the campus for a tour or lecture. However, this approach doesn’t take into account cultural barriers that may exist in communities without a tradition of higher education. These barriers often prevent the students from considering university study as relevant or their parents being willing or able to support their children in their aspirations. This report evaluates a year-long programme of weekend sessions – the Nurturing Talent Programme - delivered by volunteer graduate mentors of Somali origin with the intention of inspiring young students from the Somali community of Brent, as well as furnishing them with the skills and knowledge required to access higher education. Through a series of academic and soft-skill based workshops delivered in the local secondary school (Capital City Academy)1 and visits to universities and museums, these volunteers have had a huge impact on the students they have been mentoring. Our evidence shows that the students’ attitudes towards university and their own potential place in HE have improved significantly, and that there has been a perceptible increase in maturity in the students’ attitudes towards their future. Furthermore, teachers have reported that many of the youngsters have demonstrated improved academic performance over the course of a year, which appears to be directly related to the impact of the Nurturing Talent program.The positive outcomes have been the consequence of three key features of the program:i) The involvement of mentors from the Somali community, who are graduates or are engaged in university study, showed the students that they can genuinely aspire to engage in university study.ii) Visits to universities had a significant impact on the students by introducing them to potential fellow students from a range of backgrounds and giving familiarity with the environment and they would be going into. Visits which included an element of hands-on activity (rather than talk/tour sessions) clearly had the biggest impact on aspirations.iii) The involvement of parents engendered notable enthusiasm during the programme, which is highly significant given the important role played by parents in encouraging/supporting their children. It was clear that parents’ knowledge of the UK education system and the opportunities available to their children was limited at the start of the project, with most of them having moved to the UK during adulthood. At the end of the programme, the positive attitudes of the youngsters had influenced the parents, who were also more confident about HE process
