Historical Writing in Britain 1688-1830: Visions of History

    No full text
Historical Writing in Britain, 1688-1830 is concerned with developments in historical discourse during the long eighteenth century. The collection investigates a number of interrelated themes: the contested and unstable nature of generic boundaries surrounding historical literature; history's contribution to changing notions of national identity; and the ways that history operated as a site for the articulation of new forms of community. In order to capture the diversity of the period's understanding of history, a variety of subjects are considered including historical poetry, the historical novel, biography, and art history, as well as more conventional, 'classical' modes of historical writing. Taken together, the chapters in the volume demonstrate that eighteenth-century history shaped, and was shaped by, a series of revolutionary changes in ideas regarding historical genre, nationhood, and identity

    Ben-Joe Consumer Price Index

We observe fluctuations in the Ben-Joe consumer price index (CPI) for Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach campus students during the COVID-19 pandemic. We created this index by measuring a basket of goods consumed by a typical student on campus. The Ben-Joe index was calculated using the market basket method for ERAU students. These dollar values in the market basket were updated every month. In this study, we compare the Ben-Joe index with the nation’s CPI (Urban). The US witnessed a period of deflation following the announcement of COVID restrictions. This phenomenon was also observed on campus and consequently reflected in the Ben-Joe Index, albeit with a little lag. This deflation on campus was driven largely by a change in the price of the basic meal plan (14 meals a week) but was also slightly offset by increase in housing costs. While meal plans decreased in price due to the cancellation of in-person classes and an evacuation of dormitories, housing prices increased because of enhanced demand created by new policies of the school. The US CPI primarily decreased due to lower energy prices as well as lower energy consumption. While both CPIs saw an overall decrease due to different material goods, the reason both decreased was due to the overall economic inactivity caused by the COVID pandemic

Economic utopia of the Torah. Economic concepts of the Hebrew Bible interpreted according to the Rabbinical Literature

    No full text
Hebrew Bible offers alternative Economic utopia for building Theocratic society. In this paper, various economic concepts and themes are presented, as found in the Hebrew Bible. These economic concepts include taxation, property rights, labor market, social policy, banking, years of Sabbath and Jubilee, and business cycles. Most economic issues of the Bible are found in the texts of Torah, also known as five Books of Moses. These texts are analyzed by using classical Rabbinical commentaries for better insight. Contrary to the modern Economic theory which is based on the assumptions of scarcity of resources and unlimited needs of consumers, Economics of the Torah is based on God’s resources which are enough for all true needs of His people.Hebrew Bible, History of Economics, History of Economic Thought, Ancient Israel, Judaism

    No full text
This paper was presented at the conference "Economic Statistics: New Needs for the Twenty-First Century," cosponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth, and the National Association for Business Economics, July 11, 2002. The main objective of this paper is to make a start in the evaluation of price hedonics. The author describes the hedonic model and reviews its main uses, because the credibility of price hedonics depends in part on the current state of academic research. This is a brief overview. The author then turns to some of the standard criticisms of price hedonics and moves into the uncharted waters of the political economy of price measurement.Statistics ; Prices ; Consumer price indexes
