No full textThis paper compares the depiction of Scipio Africanus in Livy’s book 26 and Poly- bius’ book 10, focusing on the commander’s first great feat, the capture of Nova Carthago. A close comparison of the two accounts shows Livy’s will of modifying Polybius’ eulogistic portrayal, in order to give his reader a more nuanced portrayal of the commander, who imposed himself on Rome’s political stage as a new kind of charismatic leader. Thanks to his political and military skills, Scipio managed to bring Rome to victory, but, on the other hand, his leadership was representative of an ethos unsettlingly far from traditional Roman mos maiorum
Scholia and marginalia as testimonia of earlier stages of the text of Lucian: three notes on the Lexiphanes
Full text linkThe rich apparatus of scholia and marginalia transmitted in Lucian's manuscripts can prove of vital help for the constitutio textus of his writings. On the one hand, their ancient and stratified origin makes it possible that they preserve traces of an earlier stage of Lucian's text, both directly, through explicit quotations of lost variants, and indirectly, through hints given in the explanations of lemmas. On the other hand, they may allow us to recognise as problematic passages that otherwise would go unnoticed, especially in the case of intruded glosses which convey a coherent and not suspect text. The Lexiphanes, with its deliberately absurd and confused vocabulary, represents a perfect case study for the peculiar situation where it is hard to state whether a text is corrupt or not. In the present article, three textual passages from this Lucianic dialogue (Lex. 1; 3; 6) will be analysed. In all three cases, hitherto unnoticed errors will be detected and new corrections will be proposed thanks to the direct or indirect help given by the scholia and marginalia found in manuscripts

No full textLa critica usa suddividere la Satira 11 di Giovenale in due distinte sezioni (un'introduzione satirica e un carme di invito a cena), la cui relazione è in generale considerata piuttosto incoerente. Ciononostante, la corretta valutazione dei procedimenti argomentativi di Giovenale dimostra la stretta interdipendenza delle due sezioni, che devono essere considerate come parti di un unico disegno coerente. La Satira 11 si dimostra, anzi, una spiccata aderenza al nuovo programma satirico di Giovenale e mostra un'inedita volontà di intreccio tra generi

No full textL'articolo approfondisce la natura degli exempla storici nell'opera di Livio, e il loro ruolo nell'architettura narrativa degli Ab Urbe condita libri. L'analisi si concentra sui casi in cui un personaggio dell'opera fa riferimento in sede oratoria ad un fatto storico citato come esemplare, fornendone però una versione che diverge dalla relativa narrazione offerta da Livio. L'exemplum si rivela così un raffinato strumento letterario, di cui Livio si serve per moltiplicare i piani esegetici della propria opera e per veicolare importanti sottostesti al proprio pubblico di lettori
