No full textRhizostoma octopus is one of the largest jellyfish to inhabit UK waters. It has a smooth and somewhat flattened shaped umbrella (or bell) that can reach 90 cm in diameter. It is generally white or bluish in colour but may be red, brown, or grey. The blue colouration of the ring muscle of the dorsal umbrella can help differentiate it from closely related species. Beneath the umbrella is a manubrium that bears four pairs of oral arms. There are 16 three-winged scapulets at the upper part of these arms. The oral arms are longer than the bell diameter and end with three-winged bulbs that are wider at their end. There are 112 rounded lobes (lappets) around the margin of the umbrella, and the inner veil bears six pairs of velar lappets per octant. There are no marginal tentacles
Implementing Nurse-Specialist-Delivered-Education to Improve Application Compliance of Ordered Intermittent Pneumatic Compression
No full textHealthcare-associated (HA) venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the formation of a potentially deadly blood clot that can occur in patients as a result of hospitalization, surgery, procedures, etc. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022a). HA-VTE is the number one most preventable cause of death in hospitals. The organization at which this author is associated experienced 48 VTE events during the first six months of 2020 (Mainer, 2020). Over 50% of these events demonstrate a lack of appropriate physical or mechanical VTE prophylaxis application per provider order, including sequential compression devices (SCD). The use of intermittent pneumatic compression devices (IPCD) (i.e., SCDs) have been proven to reduce the risk of HA-VTE (Fan et al., 2020). However, these devices are underutilized in practice (Kakkos et al., 2016). This evidence-based practice (EBP) research project seeks to determine if nurse-specialist-delivered education about IPC effectiveness to nurses and patients who have SCD orders can improve SCD compliance rates. Two cycles of the Plan-Do-Study-Act model of EBP project implementation are utilized to implement two VTE education tools developed per evidence obtained via review of the literature. These education methods include a VTE nurse education PowerPoint presentation and VTE patient education tool. Mathematical Modeling of Biological Clocks
No full textBiological clocks generate rhythms with periods from seconds to months in many organisms and control many processes that are critical to the survival of the organism. Many rhythms in biology are the result of rhythms in the mRNA and protein abundances at the cellular level that are then synchronized within the organism. To better understand biological clocks, mathematical and computational modeling is crucial as these tools provide directions for experimental procedures, test hypotheses within these models, and corroborate new biological revelations. Therefore, we apply novel mathematical and computational techniques to obtain insights into biological clocks at the molecular level. First, we generalize and analyze an ODE model of the repressilator with an arbitrary number of genes. Previous models of the repressilator were derived from assumptions that are biologically restrictive. These previous models assume first-order transcription, translation, and degradation, with rates equivalent among genes, mRNAs, and proteins, respectively. This assumption, however, is not consistent with current biological knowledge. Accordingly, we propose a new repressilator model allowing for differing transcription, translation, and degradation terms. We show that, under conditions on these new functions, there is still a unique steady state when an odd number of genes are in the network. We also show that, with an odd number of genes, either the model converges to the steady state or to a periodic orbit. Finally, we give a counterexample to a recent conjecture proposed by Tyler et al. Taken together, our results advance the theoretical study of cyclic gene repression by generalizing the current repressilator models. Next, we derive a new transcription-rate function that arises from more reasonable biological assumptions than the traditionally used transcription-rate function. Furthermore, we analyze the qualitative differences in the period, amplitude, and phase of a model with our new transcriptionrate function and a model with the old transcription-rate function. Our numerical simulations reveal drastic differences in the period, amplitude, and phase of the protein waveforms between the two models.
Finally, we present novel algorithms to address the parameter estimation of the repressilator. Parameter estimation of models of biological oscillators is inherently challenging due to the nonlinearity present in the system. We illustrate two specific challenges by attempting to fit the parameters of the repressilator using traditional techniques. We then revisit two standard parameter estimation procedures and show how they fail to generate accurate parameter estimates. Next, we present three novel algorithms, two that take as input time-course data of the repressilator and output parameter estimates. The third algorithm takes as input time-course data of the repressilator along with a specific parameter estimate and outputs the period of the model solution with that parameter estimate as well as model solution values at the time points of the data. Ultimately, we show that our new procedures are more accurate than the two standards in the field of computational biology and a commonly used global optimization procedure, the particle swarm algorithm

Hello Rebels Family!
It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the
way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin'
Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams
was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are
jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much.
On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a
bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to
the profession I love and shaped who I have become.
At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an
avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family
strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself
and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."
Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality!

Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our
current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is
for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient.
Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient:
Have the courage to be imperfect
Take time for yourself
Sign up for that course, join that club
Be active every day in as many ways as you can
Spend time with people who make you feel good
Laugh out loud each day
Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat)
Do one thing now that you've been putting off
Focus more on things you can control

Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I
apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any
other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on
this decision (love it/dislike it etc).
A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor,
Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor
for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook.
Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases,
does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with
Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is
that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the

It was a sad reality that we all had to face this year with little to no athletic
competitions across the Province for High School Sport. But very thankfully, and
in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize
and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport.
The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football,
volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our
traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully
that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want
to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to
one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and
a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of
dedication to High School Sport!

The W.R. Myers Concert and
Stage Bands were unable to
perform this year due to COVID,
but we were lucky enough to still
be able to play our instruments.
Vince Gassi, a composer from
Toronto, was commissioned by
the W.R. Myers Band Parent
Association to write a piece for
the Concert Band. The band
students met with Mr. Gassi via
Zoom in October to talk to him
about the piece and the writing
process. He completed the piece
for us in January and we began
working on it. Again the band
students met with Mr. Gassi on
Zoom for him to listen to us play
and give feedback. But
unfortunately due to the COVID
restrictions, we were unable to
premier the piece. Hopefully,
next year we will be able to play
Tomorrow Shines Soon.

..had the opportunity to be a part of the "Minister's Youth Council." The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in
Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different
topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's,
industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from
Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student
Learning.

Sayge Turcato was in the Alberta
High School Rodeo Provincials
Finals at the beginning of June
she went into the finals as the
season leader in the Barrel
Racing and she was 8th in
District 1 for the Breakaway
Roping with a few go round wins
she ended up winning the
Alberta Finals in the Barrel
Racing and placing 4th in the
Breakaway. That qualified Sayge
to go to the National High School
Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln,
Nebraska.
Way to go Sayge!!
Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year
so far. She placed 2nd at Provincials, just behind
Sayce Turcato. This meant that she also qualified to
go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021
in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Taber Thrashers get a season after all! With vaccinate numbers up and COVID cases dropping substantially
after a short shutdown the Lacrosse league got the green light to play. And play they did! If you enjoy watching
playing a high-intensity, high-contact sport, then this is a game for you! With the Lacrosse league in its infancy in
^ber (this is just the second season of play) the team did a stellar job working on basic skills, learning plays, and
Alling as a team unit. They definitely had their ups and downs where the scoreboard was concerned. But considering
^ey were up against teams with many more years experience, the Thrashers had a phenomenal season!
