    Chronic communal conflicts resemble the prisoner’s dilemma. Both communities prefer peace to war. But neither trusts the other, viewing the other’s gain as its own loss, so potentially shared interests often go unrealized. Achieving positive-sum outcomes from apparently zero-sum struggles requires a kind of riskembracing leadership. To succeed leaders must: a) see power relations as potentially positive-sum; b) strengthen negotiating adversaries instead of weakening them; and c) demonstrate hope for a positive future and take great personal risks to achieve it. Such leadership is exemplified by Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk in the South African democratic transition. To illuminate the strategic dilemmas Mandela and de Klerk faced, we examine the work of Robert Axelrod, Thomas Schelling, and Josep Colomer, who highlight important dimensions of the problem but underplay the role of risk-embracing leadership. Finally we discuss leadership successes and failures in the Northern Ireland settlement and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

    Bubble-Point Measurements and Modeling of Binary Mixtures of Linear Siloxanes

    The bubble-point pressures of three binary mixtures of linear siloxanes have been measured. The binary mixtures consist of hexamethyldisiloxane (MM) which is mixed with either octamethyltrisiloxane (MDM), decamethyltetrasiloxane (MD2M), and dodecamethylpentasiloxane (MD3M). For each mixture, three compositions were measured in which MM was present in approximately 25 mol %, 50 mol %, and 75 mol %. The bubble-point pressures were measured over a temperature range of 270 to 380 K for all mixtures. Large uncertainties are observed for the lower temperatures (below 320 K) due to noncondensable impurities. A detailed analysis is performed to determine the effect of noncondensable gases on the measured bubble-point pressure data. The newly obtained bubble-point pressure data is used to determine new binary interaction parameters for the multicomponent Helmholtz energy model. The data used for the fitting of the binary interaction parameters are weighted by the relative uncertainty; this ensures that data points with high uncertainty contribute less to the final binary interaction parameter.     An annotated catalogue of selected works for clarinet by South African composers

    The dissertation consists of an annotated catalogue of nineteen selected works for clarinet by South African composers. These are presented in chronological order, based on the year of composition. A short biographyof the composer is given before the work is discussed. Of the analysed works, all those for solo clarinet or for clarinet and piano have been graded. A thesis of a similar nature, written in 1989 by L.A. Hartshorne, entitled ""The Compositions for Clarinet by South African Composers"", contains details of twenty-four works written between 1928 and circa 1981. The majority of the compositions analysed in the current dissertation were written from around 1981 onwards, and to some extent, therefore, this research could be seen as complementary to the information contained in the aforementioned thesis. An addendum lists all the South African works featuring solo clarinet that the author was able to trace. These include solo works, cham ber works for up to nineteen instruments and concerto-type works with strings or orchestra

    James Bond: international man of gastronomy

    This article is concerned with the representation of food and drink in Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels. In particular, it examines how the author uses Bond’s culinary knowledge and habits of consumption as an important constituent of his hero’s character. Similarly, the food choices of other characters, notably villains, are shown to be linked, by Fleming, to core aspects of their identity − principally their ethnicity. Bond’s impulse to observe and classify, very much in evidence in the novels’ food sequences, is examined in terms of the texts’ construction of Bond as a skilled identifier of signs

    Feedback preparation of Bell states for two-qubit systems with time delay

    Bell states are the maximally entangled states in two-qubit quantum systems, and play a significant role in quantum computation and quantum communication. Feedback control of stochastic quantum systems usually suffers from time-delay problems caused by the computation time for filter states and the control input. This paper addresses the preparation of Bell states in two-qubit systems with a constant delay time. A Lyapunov method is used to design a switching control law and a constant is introduced to compensate for the computation time of the estimated states and the feedback control input, thereby stabilizing the target Bell state globally. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed control law.No Full Tex

    Cold war theology: a controversial religious image of King James VI & I in England and on the Continent in 1603

    A former student of James Cameron’s, Ian Hazlett contributes a paper very much in the spirit of his teacher. It considers the afterlife of the King’s (or Negative) Confession, commissioned by James VI of Scotland in 1581 as a clear statement of his Calvinist credentials. By the time he gained the crown of England in 1603 however, his evolving religious views meant it had become a document he sought to distance himself from. Both Protestant and Catholic propagandists and publishers, keen to give a particular picture of the theological sympathies of the new English king, subsequently produced a surprisingly varied selection of versions of the Confession. These sources and what they can tell us about the theology and politics of the day are considered here for the first time in a scholarly study.Publisher PD

    URI Disambiguation in the Context of Linked Data

    The Linked Data initiative has given rise to an increasing number of RDF datasets, many of which are freely accessible online. These resources often arise as a result of database exports; however sufficient consideration may not be given to the unseen implications caused when they are used in the wider context of the Semantic Web. This paper investigates two popular resources, DBLP and DBpedia, and discusses whether the issues regarding identity management and co-reference resolution have been suitably addressed. We find that a large percentage of authors in DBLP have been conflated, and that disambiguation pages have been incorrectly linked using owl:sameAs within DBpedia. Systems for dealing with these issues are presented, and directions are given for future research

ACS AuthorChoice Abstract Over the last few decades, researchers have developed a number of empirical and theoretical models for the correlation and prediction of the thermophysical properties of pure fluids and mixtures treated as pseudo-pure fluids. In this paper, a survey of all the state-of-the-art formulations of thermophysical properties is presented. The most-accurate thermodynamic properties are obtained from multiparameter Helmholtz-energy-explicit-type formulations. For the transport properties, a wider range of methods has been employed, including the extended corresponding states method. All of the thermophysical property correlations described here have been implemented into CoolProp, an open-source thermophysical property library. This library is written in C++, with wrappers available for the majority of programming languages and platforms of technical interest. As of publication, 110 pure and pseudo-pure fluids are included in the library, as well as properties of 40 incompressible fluids and humid air.     Seasonal mobility of transverse finger bars within a mixed sand-gravel bay measured using X-band Radar

    Transverse finger bars have largely been associated with sandy coasts. Here we show that these features persist within a wider mixed sediment environment, adjacent to a shingle cuspate foreland, which has not been previously reported. Details of the bars' characteristics were gleaned from analysis of bathymetry data, whilst weekly migration rates were inferred from remote sensing of the sea surface roughness as a proxy of undulating bedforms, using X-band radar reflectance data. The bars were on average ~380 m long, had wavelengths of ~160 m, amplitudes of approximately 0.2 to 0.6 m and were orientated 30° to shore normal. They were found in water depths between −3.3 and −5.8 m Ordnance Datum. The bars migrated by approximately 150 m over the first ‘winter’ observation period (15/11/2020–02/04/2021) and 70 m in the following winter period (Sept 2021–Feb 2022) but showed virtually no signs of movement during the intervening summer months. Analysis of hydrodynamic conditions suggested the bar mobility was related to the dominant longshore currents resulting from high angle, south westerly waves. Low amplitude rhythmic bedforms were also found in the upper beach, migrating at a similar rate to the nearshore bars, which are thought to be driven by high-angle wave instability
