Efficient experimental design for the Behrens-Fisher problem with application to bioassay

    No full text
A common approach in the design of experiment for the problem of comparing two means from a normal distribution is to assume knowledge of the ratio of the population variances. The optimal sampling ratio is proportional to the square root of this quantity. In this paper it is demonstrated that a misspecification of this ratio can cause a substantial loss in power of the corresponding tests. As a robust alternative a maximin approach is used to construct designs, which are efficient, whenever the experimenter is able to specify a specific region for the ratio of the population variances. The advantages of the robust designs for inference in the Behrens-Fisher problem are illustrated by means of a simulation study and an application to the design of experiment for bioassay is presented. --Behrens-Fisher problem, bioassay, design of experiment, local optimal design, robust designs

An experimental study on the pressure dependence of viscosity in silicate melts

    No full text
The effect of pressure on melt viscosity was investigated for five compositions along the join An(CaAl2Si2O8)–Di(CaMgSi2O6) and four alkali silicates containing lithium, sodium, and potassium in constant ratio of ∼ 1:1:1, but alkali-silica ratios are varying. The experiments were performed in an internally heated gas pressure vessel at pressures from 50 to 400 MPa in the viscosity range from 108 to 1011.5 Pa⋅s using parallel plate viscometry. The polymerized An composition shows a negative pressure dependence of viscosity while the other, more depolymerized compositions of the join An–Di have neutral to positive pressure coefficients. The alkali silicates display neutral to slightly positive pressure coefficients for melt viscosity. These findings in the high viscosity range of 108–1011 Pa⋅s, where pressure appears to be more efficient than in low viscous melts at high temperature, are consistent with previous results on the viscosity of polymerized to depolymerized melts in the system NaAlSi3O8–CaMgSi2O6 by Behrens and Schulze [ H. Behrens and F. Schulze, Am. Mineral. 88, 1351 (2003) ]. Thus we confirm that the sign of the pressure coefficient for viscosity is mainly related to the degree of melt polymerization in silicate and aluminosilicate melts.DFG Grant n.°BE1720/9Published044504-142.3. D/H exchange in pure and Cr-doped enstatite: implications for hydrogen diffusivity

    No full text
The kinetics of hydrogen diffusion in enstatite was studied by hydrogen-deuterium exchange experiments in the range of 1-5,000 bar and 700-850 degrees C using synthetic single crystals of pure and Cr-doped enstatites. The OH- and OD-content in the samples was quantified after each thermal treatment with Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. H-D-exchange rates were measured parallel to the three crystallographic axes. In addition, in order to visualize diffusion profiles, OH and OD were mapped for some samples, utilizing synchrotron IR micro-spectroscopy. Hydrogen self-diffusivities derived from D/H exchange experiments at one atmosphere are very similar to the chemical diffusivity of hydrogen in natural Fe-bearing orthopyroxene, which was reported previously (Stalder and Skogby 2003) to exhibit a small, but significant anisotropy (D[001] > D[100] > D[010]). Activation energies are estimated to be 211 (+/- 31) kJ/mol for diffusion parallel [100] and 185 (+/- 28) kJ/mol for diffusion parallel [010]. Lattice diffusion of hydrogen is decelerated by more than one order of magnitude when Cr is dissolved in enstatite. In comparison to the chemical composition, pressure seems to have only a minor influence on hydrogen diffusion. Compared to other minerals in the Earth's upper mantle, enstatite exhibits the highest activation energy for hydrogen diffusion, suggesting faster diffusion than in other mafic minerals at mantle temperatures, but slower diffusion at crustal conditions. Thus under upper mantle conditions, physical properties that are expected to be influenced by hydrogen mobility, such as electrical conductivity, may in enstatite be more intensely affected by the presence of hydrogen than in other upper mantle minerals
