No full textThis study of the City of San Jose’s Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond Measure seeks to identify the politics-, management-, and planning-related lessons learned by the City as it developed its community facilities using the GO bonds proceeds. No full textEconomic pressures are forcing German hospitals to take measures to secure the cost effectiveness of medical care. Surgical facilities are particularly affected as a high-cost segment. As a consequence hospital operators and administrators have begun to hire surgical facility (OR) managers whose task it is to implement efficiency-oriented steps and reorganization measures aimed at increasing productivity and profitability of the surgical services. The OR manager is confronted with high expectations in a complex environment full of potential conflicts. With this in mind, the following article defines and comments on the most important aspects of OR managerial duties and responsibilities. The authors are experienced in OR management and are able to give the reader not only the theoretical fundamentals but also recommendations and guidelines which are particularly valuable to those contemplating a career as OR manager
Maxillary lateral incisor agenesis and its relationship to overall tooth size
No full textStatement of problem: Agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisor is linked to differences in overall tooth size. Thus, the mesio-distal space required for final esthetic restoration in patients with missing one of both maxillary lateral incisors may be smaller.
Purpose. The purpose of this study is to determine if a tooth size discrepancy exists in orthodontic patients with agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisor(s).
Material and methods. Forty sets of dental casts from white orthodontic patients (19 male and 21 female) mean age 15.9 years were collected. All casts had agenesis of one or both maxillary lateral incisors. The teeth were measured with a digital caliper at their greatest mesio-distal width and then compared to a control group matched for ethnicity, age and sex. S One-way repeated measures ANOVA (α=.05) was used for statistical analysis.
Results. Males in the test group had significantly smaller maxillary posterior teeth when compared to males in the control group, with differences ranging from 0.28-0.78mm. Females showed significantly smaller maxillary anterior teeth, with differences ranging from 0.22-0.42mm. The remaining maxillary lateral incisor was also significantly smaller (1.27mm difference) in the male and female unilateral agenesis test groups indicating higher incidence of ‘peg’ laterals when compared to the control group.
Conclusions. Agenesis of one or both maxillary lateral incisors is associated with a tooth size discrepancy. White males experienced smaller than normal posterior maxillary teeth and females showed smaller anterior maxillary teeth.This article is based on the Master’s thesis (J.W.) presented in 2011 in partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Science, Marquette University School of Dentistry, 2011.Peer reviewe

Due to the implementation of the diagnosis-related groups (DRG) system, the competitive pressure on German hospitals increased. In this context it has been shown that acute pain management offers economic benefits for hospitals. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the competitive situation, the ownership and the economic resources required on structures and processes for acute pain management.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A standardized questionnaire on structures and processes of acute pain management was mailed to the 885 directors of German departments of anesthesiology listed as members of the German Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Anästhesiologie und Intensivmedizin).
RESULTS
For most hospitals a strong regional competition existed; however, this parameter affected neither the implementation of structures nor the recommended treatment processes for pain therapy. In contrast, a clear preference for hospitals in private ownership to use the benchmarking tool QUIPS (quality improvement in postoperative pain therapy) was found. These hospitals also presented information on coping with the management of pain in the corporate clinic mission statement more often and published information about the quality of acute pain management in the quality reports more frequently. No differences were found between hospitals with different forms of ownership in the implementation of acute pain services, quality circles, expert standard pain management and the implementation of recommended processes. Hospitals with a higher case mix index (CMI) had a certified acute pain management more often. The corporate mission statement of these hospitals also contained information on how to cope with pain, presentation of the quality of pain management in the quality report, implementation of quality circles and the implementation of the expert standard pain management more frequently. There were no differences in the frequency of using the benchmarking tool QUIPS or the implementation of recommended treatment processes with respect to the CMI.
CONCLUSION
In this survey no effect of the competitive situation of hospitals on acute pain management could be demonstrated. Private ownership and a higher CMI were more often associated with structures of acute pain management which were publicly accessible in terms of hospital marketing
Major League Baseball Anti-Trust Immunity: Examining the Legal and Financial Implications of Relocation Rules
No full textMajor League Baseball (MLB) rules restrict the movement of any franchise into another’s territory. These territorial rules are designed to protect each team’s potential local revenue sources as well as to provide stability throughout the league. Recently, Major League Baseball approved financial compensation for the Washington Nationals move into the Baltimore Orioles’ territory – primarily because it was in the best interest of MLB even though it hurt the Orioles. However, the Oakland Athletics were unable to even negotiate a potential compensation plan for a move into the San Francisco Giants territory, despite the apparent financial benefit the move could have provided for every other league franchise. The Athletics are already located within 15 miles of the Giants, and their potential 40 mile move to San Jose, California would not add a new team to the San Francisco Bay Area; rather, it would simply be a move of a current team to a different location within the metropolitan area. The refusal of the Giants or MLB to negotiate a potential compromise has kept the Oakland Athletics in a substandard facility and has led to their potential move to Fremont, CA – a less desirable location than San Jose. This paper investigates the legal, policy, and financial considerations concerning Major League Baseball’s territorial rules. Specifically, it addresses antitrust law as it pertains to American professional sport, relative sport franchise relocation cases, financial arguments why leagues desire to control relocation, financial components of MLB’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the legal and financial impact of a challenge to MLB’s territorial rules – an option the Oakland Athletic initially investigated prior to their decision to pursue a potential move to Fremont.Antitrust law; Collective Bargaining Agreement; Franchise Relocation; Major League Baseball; Revenue Sharing; Territorial Rights
