Social innovation: the process development of knowledge-intensive companies
The new service development of knowledge-intensive companies in emerging economies is changing from processes with only economic goals to processes that combine economic and social needs. In this approach, processes are socially constructed through society, aiming at achieving innovation success. The main research goal is to explore how companies organise the development process of new services in order to achieve the economic and social needs. More specifically, how companies develop social processes that enable innovation supported by relevant social groups, in order to cope with latent social needs in emerging economies, and keep the competitive advantage under turbulent conditions? The main finding is the presentation of a model for process development of new services of knowledge-intensive companies in emerging economies. The integration of lead-users and relevant social groups in the innovation process can support companies in organising innovation processes for the achievement of economic and social challenges
Urban Regeneration between Well-Being, Social Determinants and Sustainable Development Goals
From the beginning, the concept of public health is deeply connected to the social development of mankind, focusing on housing and now, during COVID-19 pandemic and the POST-COVID transition, we are witnessing the exacerbation of all those phenomena of social inequality that have clearly highlighted the structural lack of public spaces and services in the most disadvantaged areas of cities. It is therefore necessary to contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of the beneficiary populations not only to ensure the satisfaction of the primary needs for development, but also to make communities less vulnerable to the climate-environmental emer-gency. Actions outlined by the major international institutions, which through the UN 2030 Agenda provides for the integration of three dimensions of sustainable development—environmental, social and economic
Schools opening and Covid-19 diffusion: Evidence from geolocalized microdata
Are schools triggering the diffusion of the Covid-19? This question is at the core of an extensive debate about the social and long-run costs of stopping the economic activity and human capital accumulation from reducing the contagion. In principle, many confounding factors, such as climate, health system treatment, and other forms of restrictions, may impede disentangling the link between schooling and Covid-19 cases when focusing on a country or regional-level data. This work sheds light on the potential impact of school opening on the upsurge of contagion by combining a weekly panel of geocoded Covid-19 cases in Sicilian census areas with a unique set of school data. The identification of the effect takes advantage of both a spatial and time-variation in school opening, stemming from the flexibility in opening dates determined by a Regional Decree, and by the occurrence of a national referendum, which pulled a set of poll-station schools towards opening earlier or later September 24th. The analysis finds that census areas where schools opened earlier observed a significant and positive increase in the growth rate of Covid-19 cases between 2.5–3.7%. This result is consistent across several specifications, including accounting for several determinants of school opening, such as the number of temporary teachers, Covid-19 cases in August, and pupils with special needs. Finally, the analysis finds lower effects in more densely populated areas, on younger population, and on smaller class size. The results imply that school reopening generated an increase of one third in cases
Increase of serum levels of vitamin E during human aging: Is it a protective factor against death?
During the recent years, numerous reports have focused the attention on the role of vitamin E as a trophic factor in normal function of the nervous system and in protection against aging or other age related pathologies as tumors, Parkinson's disease and several spino-cerebellar syndromes. We have previously reported cases with severe neurological diseases, including peripheral and central pathology due to abnormality of primary symptoms after vitamin E supplementation. Here we report the results of our studies on the changes of serum concentration of vitamin E during development and aging. vitamin E has been measured in the serum of 479 normal subjects from the birth to the age of 106 years, groupped as follows: below 20; 20-40; 40-60; 60-80; 80-100 and above 100 years. The results, show a linear increase of serum vitamin E values (18 mumole/l in the youngest group to 33.2 mumole/l in the centenarians). The data may be related to higher vitamin E intake during aging or to higher adsorption, or to minor catabolism and utilization. In any case, the highest vitamin E availability during aging has been shown and its role in protection against death is discussed
The paper is a critical essay aimed at introducing - as editors - the 19th Issue of the Dossier Journal dedicated to Urban Space. The paper therefore is realized as a position paper, framing the perspective of the public space project in the context of some emerging demands: the increasingly need for environmental performances, clearly identified in reducing climate change impacts; the social value of the public spaces as places for different uses for heterogeneous social cultures; the symbolic aspects associated with it, as reformulated by contemporary culture. In support of the thesis presented, the authors select four recent project experiences for communicating more efficiently the theoretical reflection of some theoretical insights into to the design specificity. Further, the architectural experience here proposed represent a sort of case-studies for better understanding the wide conceptual borders of innovation in this field
Obituary: Klaus Hellrigl
Dr. Klausjörg Hellrigl (1935-2021) passed away few weeks ago. For decades Dr. Hellrigl was a reference for Italian and foreign entomologists. Among his many articles and investigations, Dr. Hellrigl was probably best known for his studies on xylophagous beetles (Coleoptera: Buprestidae and Cerambycidae). Here, two former pupils of Dr. Hellrigl remember his life and scientific works
Linguistic and social constraints on the variable palatalization of alveolar stops by derived [i] in a variety of Brazilian Portuguese
In this paper we analyze the variable regressive palatalization of /t, d/ in a variety of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) in contact with Italian dialects. We fol-low Coetzee’s (2016) assumptions regarding the distinctive effects of gram-matical and non-grammatical factors on the grammar. The aim of the study is to test such claims with Noisy-HG (BOERSMA; PATER, 2008; COETZEE, 2012; 2016; COETZEE; KAWAHARA, 2013). Palatalization in BP affects /t, d/ and it is triggered by a following underived /i/ (t/i/jolo‘brick’, d/i/nheiro‘money’) or derived [i] from /e/ in unstressed word positions (t/e/atro →t[i]atro‘theater’, nád/e/ga →nád[i]ga‘buttock’). We focus on palatalization triggered by derived [i]. Besides tokens of non-palatalized consonant plus non-raised vowel ([te]atro, ná[de]ga) and of palatalized consonant plus raised vowel ([ʧi]atro, ná[ʤi]ga), the data set comprises tokens of non-pala-talized consonant plus raised vowel ([ti]atro, ná[di]ga), an innovation of the analysis regarding prior studies (BATTISTI; DORNELLES FILHO, 2010; GUTIERRES; BATTISTI; DORNELLES FILHO, 2018). The data were extracted from sociolinguistic interviews by Battisti et al.(2007). The linguistic con-straints interacting in the grammar of palatalization come from Battisti and Dornelles Filho (2010). The analysis demonstrates that a non-grammatical factor as ‘place of residence’ works as a scaling factor on faithfulness con-straints, moving their weights up or down and so affecting the variable rais-ing of /e/, a process that feeds palatalization. A pala-talização em PB afeta /t, d/ e é desencadeada por vogal /i/ não derivada (t/i/jolo, d/i/nheiro) ou [i] derivada de /e/ em posições átonas (t/e/atro→t[i]atro, nád/e/ga →nád[i]ga). Nosso foco é a palatalização desencade-ada por vogal [i] derivada.
Citizen science at school increases awareness of biological invasions and contributes to the detection of exotic ambrosia beetles
The serious and growing threat posed by biological invasions to biodiversity and livelihoods means that public engagement in dealing with problems of invasive alien species is ever more urgent and necessary hence a citizen science experiment was carried out in north-eastern Italy. The study aimed i) to raise awareness of invasive alien species threatening trees and forests, and ii) to perform monitoring activities of a group of wood borers as an example, involving teachers and students (aged 11 to 18) of high schools. Students and teachers were given background knowledge and trained about the protocol for collecting data in schoolyards/grounds. Native (Anisandrus dispar (Fabricius, 1792), Xyleborinus saxesenii (Ratzeburg, 1837)) and exotic ambrosia beetles (Anisandrus maiche Kurentsov, Cnestus mutilatus (Blandford), Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky, 1866), Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford, 1894)) were used as the target species, as they could be easily detected through accessible and low-cost traps requiring limited effort. The traps were exposed for 24 hours weekly between March and June 2021. The experiment also aimed to strengthen public involvement, connecting environmental education and experiential outdoor learning. The mutual collaboration resulted in a wider knowledge of the potential impact of exotic species. It also led to new geographical citizen-science records of two alien ambrosia beetles considered to be quarantine pests by the European Union: C. mutilatus, new for the European part of the EPPO (European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization) region, and A. maiche, which was previously found only in Eastern European EPPO member countries
