Batt, AM ORCiD: 0000-0001-6473-5397Welcome to the first issue of the Irish Journal of Paramedicine (IJP). It gives me great pleasure to launch this journal, a first for Irish paramedics, and pre-hospital care in Ireland. I am also honoured to announce that the IJP has been adopted as the official journal of the Irish College of Paramedics, the professional body for prehospital emergency care practitioners in Ireland

Batt, AM ORCiD: 0000-0001-6473-5397Preoxygenation is a critical step in advanced airway management and serves to enhance the time available for intubation prior to desaturation when patients are at additional risk. The average patient breathing room air will experience significant desaturation below the critical 90% level within 45-60s post administration of a paralytic.1,

Batt, AM ORCiD: 0000-0001-6473-5397Anatomy is a subject where learning is not possible by studying books or notes alone. The best method to teach anatomy continues to be widely debated. Previous research conducted mainly on medical students supports the principle of model building exercises to improve anatomy knowledge retention (1). In addition, the inclusion of models and multimedia learning strategies has shown favourable results to date in other health professions students. (2-4) We sought to investigate students perceptions of the inclusion of these educational approaches in a flipped curriculum in the first year of a primary care paramedic (PCP) program

Batt, AM ORCiD: 0000-0001-6473-5397The world of prehospital practice in Ireland has developed significantly over the past number of years. Whilst improvements are evident among the practitioner group in education, skillset and professional standards, the public know little to nothing of the role and function of the Irish prehospital care practitioner. The need for a national and all-inclusive professional body to represent all registered prehospital practitioners in Ireland was identified through research into continuous professional competency requirements

Batt, AM ORCiD: 0000-0001-6473-5397Significant bodies of evidence have suggested the importance of simulation based learning for medical education in training of physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals. Although there is a large body of evidence in other medical fields, there has been very little reported evidence of simulation use in paramedic education. We are examining the prevalence and types of simulation used in Canadian Paramedic education. We intend to assess gaps in simulation use
