6C learning: a pragmatic framework for 2nd generation e-learning projects.
In 2006 we expect a large scale take-up of e-learning. In this paper we first argue that e-learning has evolved from a first to a second generation, with learning itself as the essential component. Within this second generation, we present a pragmatic framework, the 6C learning framework. There are six components, all pertaining to the question how to make e-learning work. Success in e-learning is the result of careful conceptualization, design, implementation and outcome. The framework enables reflection, sustainment and evaluation. As such, it is mainly but not solely meant for management of e-learning projects. This reference framework may thus prove its usefulness as a possible checklist.e-learning; architecture;
FPGA Implementation of High Quality Random Number Generator Using LUT Based Shift Registers
AbstractRandom numbers are required for wide range of applications such as in encryption of data, testing and Monte-Carlo simulations. So, hardware implementation of random number generator is inevitable. FPGA Optimized RNGs are more efficient in terms of resource than software based RNGs. The LUT-SR RNG, a type of FPGA RNG in which LUTs are configured into shift registers with varying length. The existing work provides a midpoint between LUT-OPT RNG and LUT-FIFO RNG. In the enhancement work, we proposed modified LUT-SR RNG which provides more randomness, quality and minimum resource utilization than the existing LUT-SR generator. Inorder to improve the randomness quadratic residue method is employed. Linear Congruential Generator (LCG) algorithm, one of the oldest and well known algorithm is also used in modified LUT-SR RNG to enhance the performance. Here design was made by VHDL programming language by using Xilinx software
Experimental and numerical investigation of the influence of roughness and turbulence on LUT airfoil performance
Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have been widely used in urban environments, which contain dust and experience strong turbulence. However, airfoils for VAWTs in urban environments have received considerably less research attention than those for horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs). In this study, the sensitivity of a new VAWT airfoil developed at the Lanzhou University of Technology (LUT) to roughness was investigated via a wind tunnel experiment. The results show that the LUT airfoil is less sensitive to roughness at a roughness height of < 0.35 mm. Moreover, the drag bucket of the LUT airfoil decreases with increasing roughness height. Furthermore, the loads on the LUT airfoil during dynamic stall were studied at different turbulence intensities using a numerical method at a tip-speed ratio of 2. Before the stall, the turbulence intensity did not considerably affect the normal or tangential force coefficients of the LUT airfoil. However, after the stall, the normal force coefficient varied obviously at low turbulence intensity. Moreover, as the turbulence intensity increased, the normal and tangential force coefficients decreased rapidly, particularly in the downwind region of the VAWT
Sustainability and Inter University Collaboration in Higher Education:Capacity Building for English for Specific and Academic Purposes (ESAP)
How can students and scholars in higher education gain ground and confidence to professionally communicate in English in a global perspective? In a symposium on sustainability and inter university collaboration, the underpinning of this growth by various stakeholders, with both successes and pitfalls, is illustrated by means of practical cases in order to feed an ensuing round table discussion on the leading questions: how can networking guarantee sustainability of cooperation projects? What role do online environments and platforms play in setting up sustainable networks and in supporting joint projects during and beyond their life span? The presentations covered Capacity Building in International Cooperation (Lut Baten), Faculty Identity and FL Planning (Liliana del Pilar Gallego) Assessment Literacy and Certification (Ivonne PeñaCollada and Claudia Harsch) Developing Intercultural Communicative Competence (Ana Vivian Fernández Peraza) , Virtual Exchange & social entrepreneurship) (Sake Jager). The symposium paved the way to launching LatinCALL, an association for sustainment and promotion of networking forCALL in Latin and Central America

Yhteistyömallin palvelumuotoilu kohti koulutusvientiä
LUT University has been developing cooperation related to the activities of children and young people with various partners over the past years. This has led to the launching of the collaboration model Lappeenranta Junior University, Uniori, together with the city of Lappeenranta. The purpose of Uniori is to create an equal path for children from preschool to higher education regardless of the backgrounds of the children or their parents. As a result, Uniori's activities are recorded as part of the local supplementary curriculum. Uniori promotes interest in science and technology while integrating sustainable development themes into education. Through various international awards, LUT has received global attention for its work on sustainable development with Uniori.
Service design and education export are constantly evolving as their importance in business and in society grows. By interviewing Uniori collaboration partners from the university, the city, and the school teaching staff, a clear concept of the operation has been formed by this thesis. Utilizing service design and education export themes with the research conducted through the interviews, it has been possible for the author to create a new service model (NSM) from the basis of Uniori.
The purpose of the NSM is to enable similar activities to Uniori in the rest of the world, as the model can become an education export model for LUT. The NSM leads a customer, such as a foreign primary school, to collaborate with a local university partner and a network of local businesses. Together, they form a new collaborative network that sustains the operation of the model. The NSM consists of standardized or customizable modules that support the objectives of the model. Through the cooperation, the customer can develop the local community on a more sustainable basis creating equal opportunities for all children, now and in the future.LUT-yliopisto on viime vuosina kehittänyt lasten ja nuorten toimintaan liittyvää yhteistyötä eri kumppaneiden kanssa. Tästä johtuen Uniorin toiminta on kirjattu osaksi paikallista täydentävää opetussuunnitelmaa.
The C-Test revisited A freeware package for placing EFL students of Business English in the new Bachelor-Master structure
This article concerns placement testing for large groups of students at university who have to take a specific language course and who may not be helped by a standard proficiency test.
In the 1980s a good tool for placement testing was introduced: the C-test. Although it is widely known, it is not widely applied. On the one hand, the administration of the c-test may play a role. We have developed an authoring tool to facilitate the administration and reporting of the test.. This tool, which is freely available on the web, will be briefly explained. We tested it with teachers and students for test device, administration, correction, reporting and for use in an e-learning environment (Blackboard).
On the other hand, the validity of the c-test will also depend on the text input. We will argue that different text types and a better control of different examples of lexical difficulty are the basic requirements to build a database for a c-test for students of Business English. We have combined the use of the c-test with the WordClassifier, a freeware designed to determine the lexical difficulty of a text on the basis of lexical frequency analysis (for English). From this experience, we have derivedstatus: Publishe

How do students use GitHub in job seeking : the significance of GitHub profile on building a portfolio showcasing student’s programming skills
Software engineering students are usually required to showcase their programming skills with their own projects or work experience during the hiring process in the software industry. However, when applying for the first summer job or trainee position in their field of study, software engineering students usually do not yet have a lot of work experience. Thus, the portfolio which includes school and hobby projects is needed to demonstrate technical skills. GitHub is one of the popular platforms for software engineers to store their projects and implement version control. Its usage has become common in the projects of students as well. For that reason, the purpose of this work was to study how software engineering students could use GitHub profile more efficiently as a portfolio for job seeking. Software engineering students from LUT University and representatives of two software companies operating in Lappeenranta were interviewed in this study. The collected data was analyzed with thematic analysis. The results showed that GitHub profile is an effective portfolio for students’ job search when it has multiple different kinds of projects which are well-documented and show the job applicant’s motivation, interests and active improvement as a software developer. The challenges in basic use of Git and GitHub and the typically private software development process of the students can have an impact on the efficiency of GitHub profile as a portfolio. The limitations of this study include the small number of interviewed employer companies and the typical limitations related to thematic analysis like the subjective experiences of the author
