Synthesis of mesoporous TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films as an efficient photocatalyst by polymeric micelle assembly

    No full text
Thermally stable mesoporous TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films with pore size of 50 nm have been synthesized by adopting the polymeric micelle-assembly method. A triblock copolymer, poly(styrene-b-2-vinyl pyridine-b-ethylene oxide), which serves as a template for the mesopores, was utilized to form polymeric micelles. The effective interaction of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with the polymeric micelles enabled us to fabricate stable mesoporous films. By changing the molar ratio of TEOS and TTIP, several mesoporous TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films with different compositions can be synthesized. The presence of amorphous SiO2 phase effectively retards the growth of anatase TiO2 crystal in the pore walls and retains the original mesoporous structure, even at higher temperature (650 °C). These TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films are of very high quality, without any cracks or voids. The addition of SiO2 phase to mesoporous TiO2 films not only adsorbs more organic dyes, but also significantly enhances the photocatalytic activity compared to mesoporous pure TiO2 film without SiO2 phase

However, the development of a magnetic fluid agent that can selectively target a tumor and efficiently elevate temperature while exhibiting excellent biocompatibility still remains challenging. Here a new core-shell nanostructure consisting of inorganic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles as the core, organic alginate as the shell, and cell-targeting ligands (ie, D-galactosamine) decorated on the outer surface (denoted as Fe3O4@Alg-GA nanoparticles) was prepared using a combination of a pre-gel method and coprecipitation in aqueous solution. After treatment with an AC magnetic field, the results indicate that Fe3O4@Alg-GA nanoparticles had excellent hyperthermic efficacy in a human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2) owing to enhanced cellular uptake, and show great potential as therapeutic agents for future in vivo drug delivery systems. Incorporating Ru into TiO2 to Enhance Hydrogen Generation in Visible Light

The significant role that fossil fuels have played in energy utilization cannot be underestimated. However, owing to the non-renewable and CO2 emission associated to its usage has paved a way for a search for a more renewable and environmentally unfriendly energy sources of which hydrogen energy identified as a potential target. A highly porous TiO2-RuO2 heterogenous solvothermally engineered photocatalyst revealed how varying synthesis conditions can contribute to the modification of TiO2 towards effective photocatalytic water splitting in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis DRS, and electrochemical analysis revealed that TiO2-RuO2-20 exhibited reduced band gap, improved light absorption capability, lower electron-hole recombination rate, lower solution resistance which collectively contributed to effective photocatalytic activity. In addition, a high surface area and molg-1h-1 of hydrogen gas mesoporous nature contributed to 1794.8 molg-1h-1) and the commercially Compared to the pristine RuO2 (21.9 molg-1h-1), the TiO2-RuO2-20 sample produced available TiO2 (246.4 yield that is almost 81 times and 7 times respectively. This therefore proves the effectiveness of the solvothermal method and the ruthenium dioxide in modulating the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 photocatalyst for photocatalytic water splitting in visible light.https://digital.library.ncat.edu/gradresearchsymposium25/1098/thumbnail.jp

Research Update: Triblock copolymers as templates to synthesize inorganic nanoporous materials

    No full text
This review focuses on the application of triblock copolymers as designed templates to synthesize nanoporous materials with various compositions. Asymmetric triblock copolymers have several advantages compared with symmetric triblock copolymers and diblock copolymers, because the presence of three distinct domains can provide more functional features to direct the resultant nanoporous materials. Here we clearly describe significant contributions of asymmetric triblock copolymers, especially polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (abbreviated as PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO)

Selective Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 into Methane on Ag‐Decorated Copper Microsphere

Abstract We synthesized the silver‐decorated copper microsphere via the hydrothermal method followed by photoreduction of silver ions. Sub 100 nm Ag nanoparticles anchored on the surface of Cu microspheres enhance the electrochemical performance and the selectivity of the CO2 reduction into CH4. Incorporating Ag nanoparticles onto Cu lowers the charge transfer resistance, enhancing the catalyst's conductivity and active site and increasing the rate of CO2 reduction. The faradaic efficiency of silver nanoparticles decorated copper microsphere for methane was 70.94 %, almost twice that of a copper microsphere (44 %). The electrochemical performance showed higher catalytic properties, stability, and faradaic efficiency of silver‐decorated copper microspheres
