This article examines the changing reception of the German author Michael
Ende in the Italian literary field through the various editions of his fantasy novel Momo
(1973). A few years after the first translation by Silvia Stefani, published by Vallecchi
(1974), the novel was entirely retranslated by Daria Angeleri, published by SEI (1981) and
then reprinted several times by Longanesi. The Italian publishing history of the novel,
accompanied by a contrastive analysis of the two translations, highlights the attempt to
reposition the novel in a broader publishing context, free of generational barriers, to
redefine the author’s literary status
Misleading Paratexts and Falsely Complete Translations: Retranslating Vicki Baum’s Bestsellers in Italy
This chapter aims to offer an overview of the Italian reception of Vicki Baum’s novels, from the boom in their sales in the 1930s until today. The Italian publishing history of the first translations, reprints and retranslations of some of her bestsellers will be outlined. When comparing these editions, some interesting cases of editorial practice emerge. The publisher used, for instance, misleading paratexts, presumably to make the books more attractive for sale, even labelling some translations that were reduced versions as ‘complete editions’. Since this practice continues today, to what extent the freedom of publishers and translators may be due to the perceived quality of Baum’s works and their status as ‘popular fiction’ will be investigated
Recensione a: Amelia Valtolina, Luca Zenobi (a cura di), Ah, la terra lontana...Gottfried Benn in Italia, Pacini editore, Pisa 2018, pp. 304, € 25
Introduction
This book investigates the intricate connections between retranslation and the profound socio-cultural changes that have shaped Western cultures over the past two centuries. The collected essays address issues such as literary reception, the renewal of literary canons, readers’ expectations and tastes, the transformation of aesthetic values and linguistic standards, the changing status of translators and the position of translated texts in the target polysystems.
Drawing on diverse approaches and methodologies, the volume examines publishing history, literary reception, canon formation and the role of texts and paratexts. It offers an original perspective on the methods, purposes and motivations behind retranslation, underlining the historical dimension of a practice that has always been linked to the transformations of the target cultures and their ways of approaching foreignness

Literary protocols. Genesis and socio-political value of a literary genre in the German Democratic Republic
This article aims to examine the genesis, characteristics and models of the so-called protocol literature, a narrative genre that was very popular in the GDR in the 1970s and 1980s. On the basis of an excursus of the most representative works of the genre, the analysis investigates the peculiar overlapping of the private dimension and the public function of the protocols, highlighting the connection with the historical situation in which they were born. In particular, the article focuses on their socio-political value and their position in the literary history of the time, in relation to German and international contemporary literary instances, in order to reconstruct the trends that influenced them and to investigate the reasons for their wide success
