Construction of context and language acquisition through interaction: a semiotic investigation among Chilean English language learners
Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theory has traditionally focused on the mere learning of linguistic contents. Context from a semiotic perspective is an emerging field which is now taking increasing importance in the area, since recent research has highlighted the relevance of context when communicating in a second language (L2). This study focuses on the ways in which Chilean English language learners use a L2 in order to communicate their real-life experiences, skills and knowledge. The purpose of the study is to understand the functional categories through which context is collectively constructed to facilitate communication in a second language. To develop this study, 18 sessions about various topics were recorded with language learners, participants in each one were three novices and one expert who taught them. Eight of these recordings were selected as meaningful data and thoroughly analysed regarding context making and interaction. Through the analysis, three functional categories were identified as commonly used to establish a common context: learners’ prior knowledge, question/response routines and common sense. Additionally, non-verbal communication and discourse markers played an important role as supporters of interaction. As a conclusion, this study shows that the category of prior knowledge was the most recurrent strategy used to establish a common context. Nonetheless, the three previously mentioned categories are necessarily intertwined to interact in a second language

A.Dear Sir:-I see by late papers that you have returned from your trip to South Africa. i am pleased to know that you have returned safe, sincerely hope that you have had a pleasant trip and that the people there have not treated you worse than what you were treated here.we received the books that you ordered to be sent and thank you very much, I read them with interest and must say that after seeing and conversing with you, even if we had not known the author, we could have formed a good idea of who the author was. Here we are very much the same as you left us plodding along trying to keep our own pot a boiling as well as providing for those who are depending on our efforts. We have had a beautiful Summer and our harvest on the farms has yeal-ded satisfactory, the lumber business also has kept firm, in fact the country has produced so much that our rail road has not been able to move the products as fast as we could wish. Now in the beginning of winter, we are moving stuff more freely and hope soon again to get up to the normal. We often speak of you and remember the yarns you told us and often retail them in post to our friends. Your visit to us remains a bright spot in our memory. We cannot hope to have it repeated. Possibly some of us may go to San Francisco at the time of the exposition and if I be among that number, will surely hunt you up and enjoy your hospitality for a day or two.05207https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmcl/33300/thumbnail.jp

Inclusive growth: Why is it Important for Developing Asia?
Although Asian countries attain relatively high growth rates of GDP, many citizens do not seem to benefit from it. To remedy this problem, multilateral development institutions have developed the concept of inclusive growth, defined as growth that allows all members of a society to participate in and contribute to the growth process on an equal basis, regardless of their individual circumstances. The most direct way to achieve inclusive growth in Asia is to bring the objective of full employment of the labor force (i.e., zero involuntary unemployment) to the top of the policy agenda. Specific policies to achieve it are: (i) Redress the neglect of agriculture; (ii) Undertake public investment in basic infrastructure; (iii) Use of industrial policy to accelerate industrialization and structural transformation in general; (iv) Direct fiscal and monetary policies to the achievement of full employment; and (v) Devise Job Guarantee Programs (JGP) to ensure full employment with price stability
