The nature of Christian mysticism in the thought of Baron von Huegell and George Tyrrell
This thesis seeks to establish the place of Baron von aigel and George Tyrrell in the revival of interest in mysticism at the beginning of the present century. Though leading figures in the modernist movement in the Roman Catholic Church, their collaboration on the subject of mysticism was central to their friendship and work. They helped to
retrieve the central concerns of mystical theology after a retreat from mysticism which had affected the Church since the condemnation of Quietism in 1699. Their account of Christian mysticism, which involved a critique of Buddhism, neo-Platonism and pantheism, rested on a worldaffirming
attitude to creation, a balance between divine transcendence
and immanence and the articulation of a legitimate panentleism. It also involved a positive acceptance of the bodily-spiritual unity of human nature and ordinary experience as the locus of mystical encounter with
God.
Their account also emphasised the reality of direct contact between God and the individual, and the affective and cognitive dimensions of mystical experience. They asserted the centrality of mystical union as a dynamic communion of life, love and action which is the primary goal of the Christian life. They emphasised the necessity of contemplation, understood not as passive inaction, but as a profound energising of the soul. Asceticism, the embracing of suffering, self-discipline and a right ordering of human affection, was also judged indispensable. Moreover,
they believed that only in the context of the intellectual and institutional elements of religion, does mysticism find its true theological locus in Christian life and reflection. Their comprehensive definition of mysticism opened up the possibility of understanding both the uniqueness of Christian mysticism, and the reality and value of non-Christian forms of mystical experience as genuine encounters with the divine. Accepting a universal call to mysticism, they held the mystical way to be the way to full humanity which is also the individual's realisation of divinity
Alice Ryan and the Women of 8 Church Street Tipperary (Part One)
Alice Ryan (Ailis ni Riain) was President of 4th Battalion Cumann na mBan during the War of Independence, and the 2nd Southern Division Cumann na mBan during the Civil War. Alice ran a newsagent, grocery, tearoom, and boarding business at 8 Church Street Tipperary with her younger sister Katie Ryan who was also active. Their home and business premises at 8 Church Street was used as a Republican HQ until forced to close in 1921. Alice and Katie's older sister Mary Quigley ran the Post Office and grocery at 238 Merrion Road in Dublin. Mary's eldest daughters Kathleen (grandmother of the author of this article) and May Quigley spent time with their Aunts in Tipperary, and Grandparents in Donohill. May met Sean Treacy at 8 Church Street and they formed a close relationship. Sean was killed in Talbot Street Dublin eleven days before their wedding. Alice Ryan's first cousins Maggie and Agnes V. Harding were also active in the Republican cause, Maggie in Tipperary Cumann na mBan and Agnes V. in Dublin, where her Monument Creameries were used as Republican bases. These two articles build a picture of the activities of these women and their associates and gives the wider context of their lives. Of particular interest is the full array of illustrations from family records. The starting point for this document was Kathleen Quigley (1894-1995) (Fig 01). Kathleen's stories and artefacts were added to other family and public records. Four books were especially useful. Mary Quigley wrote family details in the Merrion Road Post Office accounts book. Katie Ryan and May Quigley directly contributed to Desmond Ryan's 1945 biography of Sean Treacy. Alice Ryan contributed to Ide ni Riain's book on A. V. Ryan. Sister Eileen Ryan, niece to Alice and Katie, documented family history in her 1997 book Branches from an Ancient Tree. Alice Ryan, Katie Ryan, and Maggie Harding, contributed directly to the Military Pensions process, which archives have recently been made public. Zoonotic potential of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. and prevalence of intestinal parasites in young dogs from different populations on Prince Edward Island, Canada
The prevalence of Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp. and other intestinal parasites was determined in dogs <1 year old from Prince Edward Island, Canada. Fecal samples were collected from the local animal shelter (n=62), private veterinary clinics (n=78) and a pet store (n=69). Intestinal parasites isolated included G. duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp., Toxocara canis, Isospora spp. and Uncinaria stenocephala. To estimate the zoonotic risk associated with these infections, genotypes of G. duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. were determined using 16S rRNA and Hsp70 gene sequencing, respectively. Dogs from the pet store had the highest prevalence of intestinal parasites (78%, 95% CI: 68-88%), followed by the private veterinary clinics (49%, 95% CI: 37-60%), and the local animal shelter (34%, 95% CI: 22-46%). The majority G. duodenalis belonged to host-adapted assemblages D (47%, 95% CI: 31-64%) and C (26%, 95% CI: 13-43%), respectively. Zoonotic assemblages A and B were isolated alone or in mixed infections from 16% (95% CI: 6-31%) of G. duodenalis-positive dogs. All Cryptosporidium spp. were the host-adapted C. canis. While host-adapted, non-zoonotic G. duodenalis genotypes were more common, the presence of G. duodenalis assemblages A and B, T. canis, and U. stenocephala suggests that these dogs may present a zoonotic risk. The zoonotic risk from Cryptosporidium-infected dogs was minimal.Fabienne D. Uehlinger, Spencer J. Greenwood, J. Trenton McClure, Gary Conboy, Ryan O’Handley, Herman W. Barkem
John A. Ryan. To be a contemplative in action
Spirituality does not come only from books or sermons. It comes from encounters,Jesus met the people and told them stories. John A. Ryan rooted his passion for social and economic justice in the world, in encounter and finding God in all things. A passion that may have made Ryan the first author to combine economic ethics and Church teachings in a way that was uncommon in that period. The goal of this paper is to present Ryan s thought in our contemporary European context. At the same time, the author will to show how Theology and Social Sciences can walk together in order to clarify the complexity of social processes and incarnate the Kingdom of God in our contemporary world. The paper s author will to show that Ryan s legacy is still able to contribute something constructive to contemporary Church Culture. After introducing some brief notes to contextualize his life, this paper describes his main theoretical contributions through two of his most important works, A living Wage and Distributive Justice. Next, the author will show how Ryan tried to incarnate his theories in a social political program that walked hand in hand with President Roosevelt s own [New Deal / social development] programs. Third, the paper s author will suggest a few connections between Ryan s main contributions and some contemporary key concepts in Social Sciences and Catholic social teachings.
Returning to Exile?: The Retrieving and Rejecting of Jewishness in French Shoah Narrative
This thesis explores the intertwining (and often competing) identities of Jew and Frenchman that play out across the landscape of Shoah (Holocaust) literature in France. The study seeks to tease out aspects of individual identity and to explore the nature of Jewishness in the context of trauma. This is achieved through a reading of survivor narratives written in French and (primarily) for a French audience.Because the narratives studied are all first-hand accounts, the portrait that is analyzed is that which the author chooses to present to his audience (for better and worse). The texts which will inform this study are Charlotte Delbo's trilogy Auschwitz et après, David Rousset's l'Univers concentrationnaire, Paul Steinberg's Chroniques d'ailleurs, and Joseph Joffo's Un sac de billes. By reading a diverse group of French authors, both Jewish and non-Jewish, this project attempts to study the relationship between one's Jewishness and their environment, both hostile and welcoming, in order to develop a better understanding of an individual's concept of "self."The last section will be an exploration of the continued impact of the Shoah on French Jewish identity and post-memory, as explored through Claude Lanzmann's film SHOAH. The readings of all of these texts will be grounded in a consideration of the unique historical factors that contributed to the formation of French Jewish identity (i.e. the French Revolution, the emancipation of French Jewry, the secularization of the state, etc.)
Quasi-cyclic Generalized LDPC codes with low error floors
In this paper, a novel methodology for designing structured generalized LDPC (G-LDPC) codes is presented. The proposed design results in quasi-cyclic G-LDPC codes for which efficient encoding is feasible through shift-register-based circuits. The structure imposed on the bipartite graphs, together with the choice of simple component codes, leads to a class of codes suitable for fast iterative decoding. A pragmatic approach to the construction of G-LDPC codes is proposed. The approach is based on the substitution of check nodes in the protograph of a low-density parity-check code with stronger nodes based, for instance, on Hamming codes. Such a design approach, which we call LDPC code doping, leads to low-rate quasi-cyclic G-LDPC codes with excellent performance in both the error floor and waterfall regions on the additive white Gaussian noise channel
Novel multi-electrode probe with three dimensional spatial resolution for simultaneous recording/stimulation in long-term adaptive deep brain stimulaton
When treating neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease (PD) modern technologies experience many deficiencies and/or limitations that researchers have been working towards improving. The problems that occur with modern devices are inadequate mechanical robustness, glial scarring due to tissue damage, reduced target area localization, and inability to simultaneously record/stimulate in vivo post implantation. The research presented here resolves the issues stated above, delivering the design of a novel Multi-Electrode Probe with 3-D spatial resolution and an on-board preamplification/filtering chip capable of simultaneous recording/stimulation. The probe has been modeled in Wildfire Pro/Engineer 4.0 and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed in COMSOL Multiphysics 3.4. The neural chip which consists of both analog and digital circuitry was designed with Taiwan Semiconductor’s (TSMC) 0.18µm CMOS technology. The very large scale integration (VLSI) design and simulation was performed in Cadence Schematic and Spectre, respectively. The aforementioned work was done in hopes of delivering a neural probe that can eventually be used in a closed loop system for Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation treatment.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Ryan M. Differential susceptibility of Iowa waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus) populations to 2,4-D, dicamba, and glufosinate
Multiple herbicide-resistant waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus (Moq.) J.D. Sauer) has limited herbicide options for Iowa row crop production. Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivars and corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids resistant to 2,4-D, dicamba, and glufosinate have provided more herbicide options for waterhemp management. A probability-based survey of Iowa fields was conducted in fall 2019 wherein waterhemp seeds were collected and their susceptibility to 2,4-D, dicamba, and glufosinate was determined. The average survival of all populations treated with 1× 2,4-D, dicamba, and glufosinate was 17%, 5%, and 4%, respectively. Seven percent of treated populations exhibited ≥50% survival to 1× rates of 2,4-D.This article is published as Ryan C. Hamberg, Ramawatar Yadav, Micheal D.K. Owen, and Mark A. Licht.
