Mapping immigrant languages in Italy
The book, edited by the author of the present chapter and Guus Extra, focuses on linguistic diversity. Within the European context, linguistic diversity can be studied at the level of both official state languages and non-national languages, in terms of both
regional and immigrant languages. The chapter focuses on mapping linguistic diversity in Italy, and methodological issues and empirical outcomes are explored for these languages. In particular, by focusing on how migrant group languages enter into the Italian linguistic space, and on the effects this has on that linguistic space, the aim is to analyse the data collected with respect to these processes to verify the hypothesis that these languages may constitute a factor that restores space and vitality to Italy’s longstanding plurilingualism, rejuvenating it by adding new elements of plurilingualism.
The paper presents the results of the research carried out at Centre of Excellence - Permanent Observatory of Immigrant Languages in Italy and of the spread of Italian language in the world - established by MIUR at the Università per Stranieri in Siena
Document and Image Compression
Although it’s true that image compression research is a mature field, continued improvements in computing power and image representation tools keep the field spry. Faster processors enable previously intractable compression algorithms and schemes, and certainly the demand for highly portable high-quality images will not abate. Document and Image Compression highlights the current state of the field along with the most probable and promising future research directions for image coding. Organized into three broad sections, the book examines the currently available techniques, future directions, and techniques for specific classes of images. It begins with an introduction to multiresolution image representation, advanced coding and modeling techniques, and the basics of perceptual image coding. This leads to discussions of the JPEG 2000 and JPEG-LS standards, lossless coding, and fractal image compression. New directions are highlighted that involve image coding and representation paradigms beyond the wavelet-based framework, the use of redundant dictionaries, the distributed source coding paradigm, and novel data-hiding techniques. The book concludes with techniques developed for classes of images where the general-purpose algorithms fail, such as for binary images and shapes, compound documents, remote sensing images, medical images, and VLSI layout image data. Contributed by international experts, Document and Image Compression gathers the latest and most important developments in image coding into a single, convenient, and authoritative source

The aim of the present contribution is an analysis of Law 153 of 1971, the normative instrument that allowed the maintenance and promotion of the Italian language through "scholastic initiatives, scholastic assistance and vocational training to be implemented abroad in favour of Italian workers and their relatives", in order to investigate its impact in terms of the diffusion of the Italian language in the world. We will try to answer the questions of whether it was adequate to the educational needs of Italians in the world and whether it managed to grasp the changes in the characteristics of ancient settlement emigration and neo-emigration. We will dwell on some qualifying aspects and on some critical points that have animated the debate on the need to reform this law over the years. We will then analyse legislative decree 64/2017, in order to understand whether it has responded to the need for change in order to meet the new linguistic-cultural needs of Italians living in the world and whether it is really a language policy instrument that is also capable of attracting a wider potential audience to the Italian language and culture
