Autoetnografia e interazionismo simbolico: un modo di essere e di vedere il mondo
The subject of this paper is the link between the conceptual tools of symbolic interac-
tionism and ethnography, with particular reference to autoethnography.
Ethnography and symbolic interactionism are closely intertwined, both from a his-
torical point of view and in terms of their theoretical points of reference. This deep
bond formed in the context of the Chicago School at the beginning of the last centu-
ry, in the early days of urban sociology and applied sociology.
After briefly introducing some historical references to the link between symbol-
ic interactionism and ethnography, and offering a basic definition of autoethnogra-
phy, we analyze the link between interactionism and ethnography using the meta-
autoethnographic method. The main general propositions that emerge from our work
are: a) Social life, identities, social relationships are fluid, not static, and autoethno-
graphic research is a consciously situated form of ethnography; b) Autoethnographic
research is open but grounded in the transformations of «obdurate reality» (Blumer),
with which the researcher negotiates the process of ethnographic interpretation and
understanding; c) «Epiphanies» (Denzin) and «sensitizing concepts» (Blumer) are cru-
cial tools for autoethographic interpretation; d) Autoethnography is a way of seeing
the world.
The autoethnographic process is a time-consuming, open, flexible, and often very
demanding way of understanding reality. The autoethnographer is himself both
observed and observer. His way of viewing the world around him also becomes the
prism through which he filters all the information that allows him to understand the
situation he is studying, in a continuous, ongoing process of interpretation

Ignazio di Loyola e Carl Rogers per la formazione degli osservatori partecipanti e per la conduzione di ricerche “centrate sulla persona”
This paper is concerned with conducting ethnographic research that is
“person-centered.” Centered, that is, on the social actor who is the protagonist of the contexts
cultural contexts that are to be studied. The objective is to provide useful tools
operational, at the different stages of ethnographic research, that enable the researcher: a) to
choose the identities through which to have the best access to the reality of study, b) to
establish face-to-face interactions that are based on respect for the actors he is
studying, c) to transform what, in a classical approach of participant observation
participant observation, were called “subjects” of the research, into “collaborating ethnographers,” d)
to adapt quickly to the sudden transformations in the field of observation that
often characterize studies of “other” cultures

“No alcol? No party!”. Etnografia dei giovani bevitori
Reconstructing and analyzing the drinking rituals of young people, this article exami-
nes the cultural patterns related to alcohol consumption. The central hypothesis is that
drinking rituals are one of the privileged forms of «togetherness» for young people,
and have important social integration and differentiation functions. The data had been
collected with a qualitative study (January 2005-January 2007) conducted in Trento, a
town in the northeast of Italy. Drinking alcohol in a group is at the same time a rite of
passage (Arnold Van Gennep) and a rite of institution (Pierre Bourdieu), which produce
symbolic boundaries separating those who belong from those who do not and create
processes of stratification and social differentiation (status, gender, etc.) symbolically ex-
pressed through practices of «drinking together»

Le prostitute vi precederanno. Inchiesta sul sesso a pagamento
Is prostitution the oldest profession in the world? Perhaps. Yet it performs social functions and takes on ever-changing meanings depending on the historical period in which it occurs.
Through the autobiographical style narrative of an ethnographic research lasting more than ten years-the first of its kind in Italy-the world of prostitution is described and analyzed in an attempt to understand the point of view of its protagonists, trying to see the world through their eyes. In this long journey (conducted mainly in Italy, but with parentheses of a few months in Colombia and the United States) some commonplaces are debunked, trends and main characteristics are highlighted, and female prostitution is compared with male prostitution.
The picture that emerges is that of a complex and varied phenomenon that is rapidly transforming and adapting to the needs of the market, becoming a privileged magnifying glass for understanding today's transformations in the relationship between men and women
