    No full text
A monochrome postcard of the M.E. Church in Georgetown, Delaware. The church was made out of brick and had a tall tower on its corner. Writing on the right indicates that the author was having a good time. Mrs. P. H. Adkins of Milton, Delaware, received this postcard. A postmark on the back indicates that this postcard was mailed from Georgetown, Delaware. The postage stamp is a one-cent U.S. #300, Benjamin Franklin. The back of the postcard is labeled 75.00 and 0240

On using Directional Information for Parameter Space Decomposition in Ellipse Detection

    No full text
In this paper we use the parametric polar representation to extend the application of edge directional information from circle to ellipse extraction. As a result we obtain a mapping which decomposes the parameter space required for ellipse extraction into two independent sub-spaces and one final histogram accumulator. The mapping includes the tangent of the angle of the first and second directional derivatives. These tangents are computed by considering edge direction at two border points. We show that the use of gradient information for parameter space decomposition avoids the intensive point labelling imposed by geometric constraints used by other approaches

The Author of this paper adds the point of view of the constitutionalist to the debate on the Italian statute n.40/1994 on assisted reproduction illustrated by Flamigni and Mori in their work. The paper ends with a reflection on the recent decision n. 162/2014 issued by the Constitutional Court, which has declared the illegitimacy of the prohibition of heterologous reproduction

This essay aims to analize decision no. 84 of 2016 of the Italian Constitu-tional Court, on the matter of scientific research on embryos. In particular the essay dwells with the problematic acknowledgement of the embryo dignity. The Author considers this aspect in the context of the relation between sci-entific evolution and legislative discretionality, taking into account the other deci-sions of the Court on the matter of medically assisted procreation

Development of a 20-item food frequency questionnaire to assess a 'prudent' dietary pattern among young women in Southampton

Objective: to develop a short food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) that can be used among young women in Southampton to assess compliance with a prudent dietary pattern characterized by high consumption of wholemeal bread, fruit and vegetables, and low consumption of sugar, white bread, and red and processed meat. Methods: diet was assessed using a 100-item interviewer-administered FFQ in 6129 non-pregnant women aged 20–34 years. In total, 94 of these women were re-interviewed 2 years later using the same FFQ. Subsequently, diet was assessed in 378 women attending SureStart Children's Centres in the Nutrition and Well-being Study (NWS) using a 20-item FFQ. The 20 foods included were those that characterized the prudent dietary pattern. Results: the 20-item prudent diet score was highly correlated with the full 100-item score (r=0.94) in the Southampton Women's Survey (SWS). Both scores were correlated with red blood cell folate (r=0.28 for the 100-item score and r=0.25 for the 20-item score). Among the women re-interviewed after 2 years, the change in prudent diet score was correlated with change in red cell folate for both the 20-item (rS=0.31) and 100-item scores (rS=0.32). In the NWS a strong association between the 20-item prudent diet score and educational attainment (r=0.41) was observed, similar to that seen in the SWS (r=0.47).Conclusions: the prudent diet pattern describes a robust axis of variation in diet. A 20-item FFQ based on the foods that characterize the prudent diet pattern has clear advantages in terms of time and resources, and is a helpful tool to characterize the diets of young women in Southampto

Laicità costituzionale e fondamentalismi tra Italia ed Europa : considerazioni a partire da alcune decisioni giurisprudenziali

    No full text
Throughout an investigation of the most significant national and european case-law, the author chooses to focus on the connection among constitutional secularity, fundamentalism and individual rights protection within multicultural societies. The article starts with the dual concept of constitutional secularity, positive and negative, and goes on by addressing case-law’s approach to cultural offences and to the role and purpose of religious symbols in public spaces. Therefore, the article aims at highlighting the risks involved in the tolerance of any form of cultural defense when it comes to the protection of fundamental rights
