Dr. Yucel Yanikdag – Faculty Author Interview

    No full text
Dr. Yucel Yanikdag, Associate Professor of History discusses his new book, Healing the Nation: Prisoners of War, Medicine and Nationalism in Turkey, 1914-1939, published recently by Edinburgh University Press. In this book, he explores how Ottoman prisoners of war and military doctors of the First World War discursively constructed their nation as a community, and at the same time attempted to exclude certain groups from that nation. Yanikdag aims to broaden the discussion of nationalism to explore how ideological and biological factors influenced each other

Domino Heck–Diels–Alder Reactions of Monosubstituted Bicyclopropylidenes

A three-component domino Heck-Diels-Alder reaction involving pinacol bicyclopropylideneboronate (8b), iodobenzene (9) and methyl acrylate (12) under Jeffery conditions [Pd(OAc)(2), PPh(3), K(2)CO(3), Et(4)NCl, MeCN] produced a mixture of phenylspiro[2.5]octeneboronates syn/anti-(E)-14b and methyl phenylspirooctenecarboxylate 25 in 25 and 38 % yield, respectively. The major product 25 was most probably formed via the homoallylpalladium complex 23b undergoing deboropalladation rather than dehydropalladation. Similarly, reactions of tributylstannyl- and hydroxydimethylsilyl-substituted bicyclopropylidenes 8c-d with 9 and tert-butyl acrylate gave the tert-butyl phenylspirooctenecarboxylate 26 via the diene 24 formed by demetallopalladation processes. The reaction of methyl 1,1'-bicyclopropylidene-2-carboxylate (8e) with iodobenzene (9) in the presence of tert-butyl acrylate (13) furnished a mixture of regimsomeric and diastereomeric spirooctenes syn/anti-(E)-15e and syn/anti-(Z)-15e in 69 and 6 % yield, respectively. The structures of the major pair of diastereomers syn-(E)-15e and anti-(E)-15e were rigorously proved by X-ray crystal structure analyses

Cyclopropyl Building Blocks in Organic Synthesis. Part 143. A Two‐Step, Three‐Component Queuing Cascade Leading to Dihydrobenzoxepine and Dihydrobenzazepine Derivatives.

A palladium-catalyzed reaction of methylenespiropentane (11) with iodobenzene (12) under typical Heck conditions [Pd(OAC)(2), PPh3, Et3N, DMF] produced a mixture of the unstable [3]dendralene 13 and allylidenecyclopropane 14 in 38 % yield. When an analogous reaction with iodobenzene was carried out in the presence of morpholine (25) and of tris(2-furyl)phosphane (TFP) instead of triphenylphosphane, the dienes 26, 28 and 31 were generated by nucleophilic trapping of pi-allylpalladium intermediates 30 and 32. The cross coupling of methylenespiropentane (11) with the functionalized aryl iodides 33a-g in the presence of a palladium precatalyst [Pd(OAc)2, TFP, Et3N, DMF] at 80 degrees C, 3 h, provided the seven-membered 3,4-dimethylene-substituted heterocycles 34a-g and 35b which, upon addition of dimethyl fumarate (19), underwent Diels-Alder reactions to furnish bicyclic and higher oligocyclic dihydrobenzoxepine and -benzazepine derivatives 36a-g and 37b, yet in rather moderate yields of 18-29 % only. The overall process constitutes a one-pot, two-step, three-component queuing cascade.

Diels-Alder reactions of novel (1 '-arylallylidene)cyclopropanes with heterodienophiles

Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of various aryl iodides with bicyclopropylidene provided isolable (1'arylallylidene)cyclopropanes, which reacted with a number of carbonyl compounds in the presence of Eu(fod)(3) under high pressure to furnish oxaspiro[2.5]octene derivatives in moderate to good yields (22-69%). The reactions of the allylidenecyclopropanes with two azo compounds as dienophiles afforded diazaspiro[2.5]octenes in high yields (82 and 99%) even at ambient pressure. When treated with nitrosobenzene, two of the allylidenecyclopro-panes gave the Diels-Alder adducts in up to 83 and 40% yield. 2,5-Diiodo-pxylene coupled twice with bicyclopropylidene, and the product underwent a twofold Diels-Alder reaction with nitrosobenzene to produce the bis(spirocyclopropaneoxazine) derivative in 88% yield. This overall transformation can be brought about in a one-pot, two-step operation by addition of the nitrosoarene to the reaction mixture immediately after formation of the allylidenecyclopropanes to furnish various 5-oxa-4-azaspiro[2.5]oct-7-ene derivatives in 22-77% yield. The coupling of methyl bicyclopropylidenecarboxylate with 2,6-dimethylphenyl iodide produced a mixture of very stable regioisomeric allylidenecyclopropane derivatives in 90% yield. The reaction of this mixture with N-phenyl-triazolinedione gave a corresponding mixture of the spirocyclopropanated heterobicycles in 61% yield

Characterization and comparison of mine wastes in Can Coal Basin, northwest Turkey: a case study

    No full text
The Can Coal Basin is a major coal-producing site in northwest Turkey that has faced acid mine drainage problems since the 1980s. This study characterized and compared mine wastes from the Etili and Comakli open-pit coal mines in the Can Coal Basin physically, mineralogically, and geochemically for acid mine drainage potential and metal(loid) mobility. Mineralogical analysis determined pyrite to be the major sulfide mineral in the Etili and Comakli coal and mine wastes, while dolomite and calcite were abundant in the mine wastes from the Comakli site. Concentrations of Al, As, Mn, and Pb in these mine wastes are higher than in Turkish and world coals. The enrichment factor showed moderate enrichment of Pb and significant enrichment of As in the Etili and Comakli mine wastes, respectively. Static tests indicated acid generation potential in all Etili and some Comakli mine wastes. The modified synthetic precipitation leaching procedure revealed that greater concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and SO42- were released from pyrite-rich mine wastes. Physical, mineralogical, and geochemical factors affecting acid mine drainage were highly variable within and between sites. Increasing concern over significant environmental health effects of low-pH, metal(loid)-polluted mine wastes necessitates remediation of the mine sites.Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit of Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University [FBA-2016-759]This research was partly supported by the Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit of Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University under FBA-2016-759 numbered project. [TR] Merkez bankalarinin politika tepkilerinin enflasyon disi degiskenlerle bagintili bir gorunum arz etmesi kuresel kriz doneminde dikkat ceken bir gelisme olmustur. Enflasyon hedeflemesi rejimini benimsemis gelismekte olan ulkeleri inceleyen bu calisma, faiz kararlari ile enflasyon disi unsurlar arasinda kriz doneminde olusan baga ragmen, geleneksel tepki fonksiyonu degiskenlerinin onemini korudugunu tespit etmektedir. [EN] During the global crisis, central banks’ policy reactions were somewhat associated with factors other than inflation. Focusing on inflation-targeting emerging market economies, this study documents that traditional variables are still important in explaining the monetary reaction functions of central banks, despite the emergence of a relationship between the policy rates and factors other than inflation during the crisis period.

An experimental study on friction reducing polymers in turbulent pipe flow

    No full text
An experimental study was conducted to search the reduction of friction in fully developed turbulent pipe flow using different types of polyacrylamides as friction reducing polymers. Pressure drop measurements determined the friction reduction. Three different polymer types Superfloc A110, Superfloc A130 and Superfloc A150 were used to examine the effect of polymer concentration, Reynolds number and polymer type on friction reduction. The Darcy friction factor was obtained for each polymer type at the polymer concentration ranging from 0 to 500 wppm and a Reynolds number range of 10000-80000. It was observed that friction factor decreased with increment in polymer concentration and Reynolds number for each polymer. Higher molecular weight polymers are more effective at reducing friction. With increasing concentration of polymer, the measured data approaches the Virk asymptote, which represents the maximum friction reduction limit by the polymers. The percentage of friction reduction increased with increasing concentration of polymer up to 100 wppm for each polymer type and then began to decrease for polymer concentrations higher than 100 wppm. An empirical formula was obtained to calculate the Darcy friction factor as a function of Reynolds number and polymer concentration for Superfloc A110.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Marine and Transport Technolog

A patient with mushroom allergy; a new etiological agent of Kounis syndrome

Kounis syndrome (KS) is a rarely diagnosed condition which should always be kept in mind when an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) happens in the context of anaphylactic reactions. We report a case of a 31-year old female; 2 hours after the ingestion of the mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus); she experienced nausea, stomachache, vomiting, dyspnea and chest pain. Electrocardiogram (ECG) showed an ST segment elevation in D1, AVL, precordial leads V1-V4. The blood analysis revealed high levels of CK-MB fraction and troponin T values. The diagnosis of Kounis syndrome was made in the catheterization laboratory via the complete resolution of angina, along with electrocardiographic changes that took place after intracoronary nitrate therapy and skin prick to prick test positivism with the mushroom. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a type I variant of Kounis syndrome due to Pleurotus ostreatus allergy reported so far
