Stimulated by the burgeoning noticeable in recent decades across the disciplines of research on culture and literature of the early modern period, interest in the body of literary works by the Nuremberg author Hans Sachs (1494-1576) is also on the rise again. This paper offers a report on scholarship devoted to his wide-ranging creative output and published between the re-emergence of Sachs studies in the mid-1970s up until the present day. Beginning with a retrospective that is primarily thematic in structure, it turns then to a discussion (in terms both of methodology and of content) of the focus and findings found in studies to date, as well as looking at continuing gaps and desiderata; those latter have in the main to do with textual problems, but also touch on many aspects (literary, historical etc.) yet to be properly examined. There follows, finally, a delineation, based on the status quo as presented, of in all four fundamentally relevant fields of study: the report thus provides a thematic and methodological framework of potential use for future research

Ich-Erzählen im Medium des Frühdrucks. Narrative und diskursive Strukturen in gedruckten deutschsprachigen Reimerzählungen um 1500 (Hans Folz, Sebastian Brant, Hans Sachs).

My paper presents three German poems from the late 15th/early 16th cen-tury that formally stand in the tradition of couple rhymed allegorical first-person narratives and thematically deal with the political conditions of their time. The three different authors represent two variants of a certain type of author belonging to the artisan class (Hans Folz, Hans Sachs in Nuremberg) or to the academically educated, bilingual (Latin/German) upper class (Sebastian Brant in Strasbourg) of the urban bourgeois culture. In both cases, they opened up early to the new medium of book printing. Consequently, the para-texts with which all three texts produced directly for print are equipped take on important functions within the new printing medium and the new practise of distance communication that develops from it, aiming above all at the staging of the respective authorship. The three selected case studies high-light the different literary and communicative strategies developed by each author under these auspices. What all three texts have in common, however, is a more or less sophisticated play with the two different discourse levels of the (fictional) narra-tor ego and the (real) author ego. Such a game is at the same time anchored in essen-tial aspects within the socio-cultural environment of the authors and the respective specific literary culture. Thus, in the case of Hans Folz, as in the case of his successor Hans Sachs, the effort to adapt the handed-down medieval traditions and rhetoric models to the new conditions of vernacular communication visibly predominates. Differently, the concept of authorship claimed by Sebastian Brant is characterised by the effort to harmonise the function of the poet as orator and prophet, derived from the humanist tradition, with the instructional tasks fundamental to vernacular poet

Abstract. My paper focuses on the poems composed by the Nuremberg author Hans Sachs (1498–1567) that are characterized by the presence of an homodiegetic narra-tor. After a preliminary formal and thematic classification of the entire corpus, the use of the homodiegetic format is analysed in further detail using the example of a partial corpus, whose texts deal with the theme of the worldly love between a man and a woman, thus standing in the medieval tradition of the Minnerede. Sachs de-velops the construction of the homodiegetic frame, which is typical of this genre, in the form of two different basic patterns, which are also successively developed over time and which are essentially delimited by the different ontological situation of the inner diegetic (›factual‹ vs. allegorical world of experience). With regard to the ho-modiegetic narrator, these basic patterns correlate with his different position (as an observer or an actor) and with different functional attributions (the subject or object of teaching). In turn, they both converge at the end on to an external level in the biographical author-ego of the poet

Der humanistische Autordiskurs im Schnittfeld von neulateinischer und volkssprachlicher Mittelalter-Rezeption: Die Barbarossa-Vita des Johannes Adelphus Muling

The Barbarossa. Ein wahrhafftige beschreibung des Lebens und der Geschichte Kaiser Friedrichs I., composed by the humanist and doctor Johannes Adelphus Muling and first printed in Strasbourg in 1520, was the most widespread source on the history of the Emperor Frederick I in the Early Modern Period. Its emergence fits into the national historical debate conducted by contemporary humanists, especially by the Alsazian Circle around Jakob Wimpfeling and Sebastian Brant. The text is a compilation of sources from different genres and cultural provenances. In addition to the mostly Latin texts, both medieval and contemporary, Muling also advertised an excerpt of the Volksbuch vom Kaiser Friedrich Rotbart, first printed in 1519. He thus acted as a mediator of the Latin Barbarossa literature into the vernacular (he himself considered his work as a translation). By connecting different literary discourses, Muling set the course for the formation of the Barbarossa myth, the narratives of which, as is well known, were continued and extended into the modern age. On the basis of an analysis of the formal and content-related text structures, in particular of the complex paratextual apparatus, the interfaces between humanistic and vernacular discourse are pointed out and the text itself is related to Muling’s self-conception as an author

Zwischen Tugend und Laster. Weibliche Rollenbilder in den Tragedi und Comedi des Hans Sachs

The present study is the first to examine in detail a representative corpus of the tragedi and comedi with female protagonists written by the Nuremberg author Hans Sachs. On the basis of a precise reconstruction of the intertextual frame of reference of each of the plays, taking into account both the enormously diverse literary sources and Sachs’ own topically related poems in the form of master songs and narrative poems, the author’s dramaturgical methods are explored more precisely. The "serious" drama in particular turns out to be a formidable virtual arena for exhibiting creative female attributes and the female potential for action, bringing out frequently subliminal contradictions to the normative claim to validity of the attached moral instruction. Conversely, in other cases, the moral message also ties in with the literary discourse, for example by tracing female vices back to male misconduct. Seen as a whole, the author's attempt to negotiate new, more reciprocally conceived ways of dealing with the sexes within the framework of the Lutheran-patriarchal marriage model and the socio-political order that it supports becomes apparent

Percorsi casuali. La percezioni di Bari e della Puglia nella letteratura di viaggio di lingua tedesca del XV e XVI secolo

This paper aims to examine a series of pilgrimage reports originally written in the German language between the second half of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century. It is a text type that has increasingly been the main topic of several studies about travel literature, facilitated by a range of new paradigms that the so-called “cultural turn” has brought to the attention of the critical discourse. However, the theme here chosen, in part, lies outside the concrete phenomena taken into account by those studies. The choice, in fact, has fallen only on those texts that show a specific variation of the ‘standard model’, telling about stops in Puglia, and in particular giving information on the Ionian-Adriatic related urban centers (Bari, Brindisi, Otranto, Taranto, and Gallipoli). The Apulian stop regularly occurs on the way back, after visiting the canonical places of Palestine, and represents an unexpected experience, due to adverse conditions (especially meteorological), as an alternative to the ordinary route across the sea. From this specific corpus three works are analyzed: they represent also three text types, within the common literary genre as it develops in the field of the German language. The authors of the first two (Dietrich von Schach-ten and Bernhard von Hirschfeld) were knights, therefore representatives of the lesser nobility, a social class that, in the wake of values and ideas of the previous Crusades, was particularly active in pilgrimages to Jerusalem. In the first case, it was a text commissioned by the feudal lord, in the second one it was definitely an autobiographical writing. The third text, Die Sionspilger by Felix Fabri, a renowned Dominican writer, belongs to a different subgenre, that is the one of pilgrimage guides. As such, it did not aim at providing useful information for those who had decided to make a similar journey, nor was grounded on an empiric personal experience, as the other two. Rather, it suggested some spiritual itineraries, among which also an Apulian path, as an appendix to Santa Maria di Loreto pilgrimage in the Marche region. As the analysis shows, the concrete news provided about the corresponding Apulian locations substantially reflect these three different formulations. Especially in the first two examined texts, there is a perception of the places visited, in which the acquired and, so to speak, already established knowledge (i.e. the news about the St. Nicholas’ sepulcher in Bari) mixes with fresh news, sometimes quite specific, chosen by the authors according to their personal and empirical experience, sometimes overlapping these ones
