I remember my mother at Seabrook

    No full text
In this "I remember" memoir, Hazel Okino Ritchey remembers her mother, Alice Oda Okino. After Hazel's family moved to Seabrook from the Arkansas camp they were interned at, her mother began teaching at the Child Care Center at Seabrook. Later, she attended Glassboro State College for continuing education. Hazel also remembers that her mother was very kind, and Hazel's and her brother's friends would visit their house to spend time with Hazel's mother. The Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center has been soliciting current and past residents of Seabrook Farms for an "I remember" project. Residents are asked to create narratives regarding their experiences at Seabrook Farms. These memories help preserve the history and multi-cultural heritage of Seabrook Farms

Hazel Miller postcard to Franklin County Woman Suffrage Association, September 26, 1914

    No full text
Hazel Miller wrote this letter to the headquarters of the Franklin County Woman Suffrage Association on September 26, 1914, to request literature on women's suffrage. She was planning to use the materials at her Grange Meeting and explained that she would be able to use the materials well if she received them quickly. The Franklin County Woman Suffrage Association was formed in 1912, after the Ohio Constitutional Convention elected to bring to a vote the question of removing the words "white male" from the state constitution with regard to voting rights. Headquartered in the Chamber of Commerce building in Columbus, Ohio, the organization put out regular publications, organized public speeches and meetings, distributed literature and held parades in support of the suffrage movement. Women's suffrage in Ohio was defeated in a special election in 1912 and again in 1914 and 1916 before a resolution narrowly passed in 1917 allowing municipal voting by women in Columbus. In 1920, the 19th Amendment passed, extending the vote to women and prohibiting state and federal government from denying suffrage on the basis of sex
