    Currently existing data sources for informetric research are far from being perfect. Some of the imperfections are caused by uneven coverage, errors or changes in indexing policies that are often not retroactive or by mistaken or ineffective retrieval strategies employed by the users. Being aware of the limitations of the data sources and a closer inspection of the data we work with can improve the validity and interpretation of our findings. In this paper I discuss current limitations of several data sources, emphasize the ever-changing nature of these sources and recommend trying to understand the specific problems and limitations at the time the study is conducted instead of relying on methods recommended in previous studies

    Search engine results over time-a case study on search engine stability

    This paper examines the performance of search engines over time. The performance is not as expected: search engines loose information, relevant URLs that were retrieved at a given time by a certain search engine, were not retrieved by the same search engine at a later time, although they continued to exist and to be relevant. A closer examination of the these URLs revealed that not only URLs were dropped, but content was also lost for a large portion of these URLs: no other URL retrieved by the search engine contained the same information. As far as we know this aspect of the performance of search engines has not been thoroughly studied before. The problem is investigated through a case study, using the search phrase "informetrics OR informetric". The searches were carried out in one month intervals during a five months period between January and June 1998. An additional search round and comparison were carried out on June 1999.     Expectations versus reality: Search engine features needed for Web research at mid 2005

    Web research is based on data from or about the Web. Often data is collected using search engines. Here we describe our "wish list" for the ideal search engine, explain the need for the specific features and examine whether the currently existing major search engines can at least partially fulfil the requirements of the ultimate search tool. The major search tools are commercial and are oriented towards the "average" user and not towards the Web researcher, and therefore are unable to meet all the requests. One possible solution is for the research community to recruit the necessary funding, resources and know-how in order to build a research-oriented search tool

    A bibliometric index based on the complete list of cited Publications

    We propose a new index, the j-index, which is defined for an author as the sum of the square roots of the numbers of citations to each of the author’s publications. The idea behind the j-index it to remedy a drawback of the h-index - that the h-index does not take into account the full citation record of a researcher. The square root function is motivated by our desire to avoid the possible bias that may occur with a simple sum when an author has several very highly cited papers. We compare the j-index to the h-index, the g-index and the total citation count for three subject areas using several association measures. Our results indicate that that the association between the j-index and the other indices varies according to the subject area. One explanation of this variation may be due to the proportion of citations to publications of the researcher that are in the h-core. The j-index is not an h-index variant, and as such is intended to complement rather than necessarily replace the h-index and other bibliometric indicators, thus providing a more complete picture of a researcher’s achievements

    Introducción. El Blogging es un fenómeno relativamente nuevo pero que ya ha ganado una alta popularidad. Este artículo informa del uso de blogs (Weblogs) por bibliotecas y bibliotecarios. Método. Se compiló una lista de blogs de datos obtenidos de varias listas/directorios en dos intervalos de tiempo, en diciembre de 2003 y febrero de 2005. Se caracterizaron los blogs y el contenido de un mes de entradas (postings) usando análisis de contenido multi-facetado. Se compararon los blogs identificados en 2003 con los blogs listados en 2005. Resultados. En general, los resultados indican que los blogs tienen impacto en las actividades de los profesionales de la información y estos son un nuevo cauce de información para transferir información tanto a los compañeros profesionales como a otros usuarios del Web. Además también sirven como una herramienta eficaz para "promocionar" eventos y recursos de la biblioteca. Los bibliotecarios usan los blogs para diseminar información general y profesional, mientras que las bibliotecas usan a menudo los blogs para anuncios. Conclusiones. Las bibliotecas utilizan los blogs de una nueva manera que les permite diseminar la información a sus patrocinadores. Aunque ha habido un aumento considerable en el número de bibliotecas con blogs, el puede esperarse un crecimiento posterior, puesto que en febrero de 2005 sólo una minoría de bibliotecas utilizaba esta herramienta

    Andrei Broder, the well-known Internet researcher does not have a home page of his own. This complicates finding information about him, especially since during the last ten years he switched several employers. Especially of interest is the page research.compaq.com/people/Andrei_Broder/bio.html, which almost seven years after Andrei Broder left Compaq, still appears among the top-ten results displayed by Google for the query Andrei Broder as of June 2006. The title of this page is “No such user” and its content is “Sorry, Andrei Broder is no longer working in Compaq Corporate Research.” The case becomes even more interesting, since the actual page and the whole site research.compaq.com are inaccessible at least since March 2006, and the Google’s cached copy is from December 2005! In this paper we investigate the placement of this page at various search engines over the years, and describe searchers’ efforts to find information about the job title and business address of Andrei Broder as of May 2005, when he was still working at IBM

    Les chercheurs qui analysent le Web s’appuient sur des données qui sont souvent collectées à l’aide des moteurs de recherche. Dans une précédente contribution (Bar-Ilan, 2005), l’auteur a proposé une liste d’objectifs pour le moteur de recherche idéal en expliquant le besoin de fonctionnalités spécifiques pour ce type d’activité. Ici, il revisite cette liste et examine si les principaux moteurs de recherche actuels peuvent répondre, au moins partiellement, aux exigences de l’outil de recherche idéal. Les principaux outils de recherche sont commerciaux et destinés à l’utilisateur « moyen » et non au chercheur scientifique qui analyse le Web, ils ne peuvent donc pas satisfaire toutes les demandes.Web research is based on data from the Web.
