Exploring the emerging leadership model in a non-for-profit high school of Gilgit Baltistan: A grounded theory study research

    No full text
This study aimed at exploring the emerging leadership model of a non-for-profit high school through examining the practices of a female headteacher in her school, situated in Gilgit Baltistan (GB). To help discern this emerging leadership model, the study used grounded theory method within the qualitative research paradigm. The 29 research participants included the female headteacher, teachers (female and male), students (female and male), and parents (mothers and fathers). These participants were selected through a theoretical purposive sampling strategy so that rich data could be generated for discerning the leadership model. I used semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis. The findings of the study revealed a leadership model that reflected the female headteacher constantly navigating through her gender identity, vision for the school, the institutional targets, and reminders of social-cultural context while leading the school. To this end, she used different strategies with a focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning in the school. She created a collaborative and conducive learning environment for the students and teachers. Further, the study revealed that leadership practices are shaped by the larger socio-cultural context. The female headteacher was found to be constantly navigating through the complex gendered social fabric of the society to show her leadership mettle. The findings also revealed that a leader would not follow any fixed leadership model but the contextual realities including community beliefs would determine leadership actions and practices. This study has explicated the potentials of women school leaders and has also highlighted the challenges facing them because of the stereotypical image of women as weaker beings. The study recommends that organizations should develop a better understanding of the social context in which women leaders lead the schools. Thus, organizations/schools need to arrange leadership training and support for women in education in similar cultural contexts to create an enabling environment for more inclusive leadership practices

(RMNH 111881 / 1 paratype).

Distribution.—See fig. 2.

Description (n=58).—Shell slender cylindrical to slightly fusiform, with 7–8 3/4 weakly inflated whorls, sculptured with regularly placed, moderate to strong axial ribs. The sculpture is often partially obsolete. Body whorl obliquely flattened and more or less narrowed, with a prominent keel. A slight external indentation accompanies the palatalis superior; at the position of the infraparietalis the apertural lip is mostly slightly indented. The palatal side of the aperture appears vertical (in lateral view). Umbilicus open. Shell height, 5.1– 7.1 mm, width, 2.0– 2.7 mm.

Apertural lip thickened, continuous at parietal side or connected by a more or less prominent callus. Occasionally the aperture slightly protrudes. Angularis connected with spiralis. Subangularis lamelliform and more or less strongly developed. Infraparietalis prominent. Columellaris reaching only slightly beyond the columella, at its front end clearly thicker than the other lamellae; ending abruptly and sometimes connected with an indistinct fold on the apertural lip. Infracolumellaris longer, often reaching the apertural edge. Infrapalatalis, palatalis inferior and palatalis superior clearly indented and reaching the edge of the aperture. At the weak anterodorsal palatal center a suprapalatalis and often a suturalis are present. At the apertural edge several more or less indistinct folds may be present.

Differentiation.— Abida s. ionicae differs clearly from A. s. andorrensis. Although these subspecies are connected by a series of intermediates, the extremes are easily distinguishable. Shells of Abida s. ionicae are smaller than A. s. andorrensis (5.1–7.1 mm versus 9.6–11.8 mm in height) and much more slender. The former subspecies is found at c. 1,600 m altitude and higher, whereas A. s. andorrensis is known from c. 900– 1,500 m altitude. Abida s. ionicae differs from the other high-altitude forms by its slightly more cylindrical shape and the very prominent axial ribbing. A few shells are known from the province of Lérida, Spain: Pico Mainera mtn, NW of Sort (pl. 7 fig. K).

Ecology.—The subspecies is known from altitudes between 1,600 and 2,700 m, where it occurs in Andorra on calcareous schist with limonitized pyrite crystals.

Derivatio nominis.—This subspecies is named after Ms. Ionica Smeets, a good friend of the first author, to celebrate 15 years of friendschip.

Genetic barcode.—GenBank accession number EU395371.
Published as part of Kokshoorn, Bas & Gittenberger, Edmund, 2010, Chondrinidae taxonomy revisited: New synonymies, new taxa, and a checklist of species and subspecies (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Pulmonata) 2539, pp. 1-62 in Zootaxa 2539 (1) on page 22, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.2539.1.1, http://zenodo.org/record/10094211</a&gt

Navigating Respectability in Patriarchal Contexts: Ethical Dilemmas of Women Researchers in Pakistan

The article explores the field research experiences of two women researchers who navigated patriarchal social dynamics in Pakistan. We use respectability as a lens to explain how we established ourselves in our research contexts and how we negotiated our positions. Drawing on extensive fieldwork for our PhD studies, we show the moral conundrums of constantly moving on a spectrum of being both a “respectable” woman and a “woman researcher”. We had to navigate both identities carefully to access research respondents and build rapport. This meant at times adhering to patriarchal gender norms, while in other situations, willingly or unwillingly, transgressing them. We show that we had to constantly mediate between professional goals, personal and social norms and values, and our own wellbeing. We thereby seek to contribute to discussions on the vulnerability of researchers and the ethics of care

Professionals unprepared: A critical appraisal of social work practice at the Drugs Abuse Rehabilitation Centres in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Social work is a practice-based profession that facilitates, enables, and rehabilitates the neglected segments of society facing various issues, including substance abuse. However, social workers\u27 efficiency in substance use rehabilitation is constrained by several factors. Pakistan follows the imported theoretical models of social work, which face enormous challenges during implementation for lacking contextual understanding. This study examines professional social workers\u27 role to examine the challenges in providing institutional service delivery in substance (drugs) abuse treatment centres in Pakistan. The study found that the social work theory and practice gap hurts services delivery in Drug Abuse Rehabilitation Centres through qualitative approaches. Training in social work theory does not adequately equip the students to provide the required social services at the drugs rehabilitation centres. Donor-driven social work drives and demotivated social workers testify to the mismatch between social work theory and practice. Indigenous philanthropy models and broadening institutional support could remedy the situation

Women’s Political Empowerment through Local Government in the Patriarchal Society of Pakistan

    No full text
The democratic local government empowers community members to decide their destiny. However, it bears different meanings for different people in different socio-cultural settings. This study assesses the intended outcome of the local government system, revived by General Pervez Musharraf’s regime in Pakistan since 2001 regarding women’s political empowerment. In the Devolution Plan 2001, the gender quotas of 33% have been reserved for women in all the three tiers of local government at the district level. However, the existing informal institutional forces like socio-cultural and religious practices did not let women to fully participate and achieve the desired political status. Local women’s representatives have not been able to participate meaningfully in the policymaking at the local level. Therefore, this study suggests revising the design of the local government with a focus on eligibility criteria for the candidates. Moreover, to ensure the political empowerment of women, policymakers should focus on other alternatives like women education, political awareness, and monitoring by the civil society and media

Rehabilitation of Children with Intellectual Disability: Challenges in Social Skills Training in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

    No full text
Intellectual disability among children is on the rise with no proper social skills training facilities around the province – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Special education institutions have been established to rehabilitate differently abled children; however, their focus is more on children\u27s literacy with a physical disability. Resultantly, children with intellectual disabilities constitute a \u27minority group\u27 within the province\u27s differently abled population. Consequently, children with intellectual disabilities remain excluded. The qualitative study aims to examine the quality of the state-sponsored special education institutions, emphasizing on social/life skill training services for children with intellectual disabilities. Based on a total of 25 individual interviews and observations from five selected districts, it is argued that despite the growing number of children with intellectual disabilities, the services are limited to physiotherapy services only. Speech therapies and social skills training are almost non-existent in the public sector special education institutes. Lack of a clear government policy and sufficient funding results in scarce resources, including trained staff, coupled with poor social welfare and special education services, which intensifies the problem. Engaging empowerment theory of Julian Rappaport (1977), the study recommends providing all essential services to children with ID for enabling and living an empowered life
