    A Prudent Central Banker

    No full text
This paper studies the role of prudence in modern central banking. To that end, it relaxes the usual assumption of quadratic preferences and adopts instead an asymmetric preference specification whereby positive deviations from a target can be weighted more, or less, severely than negative deviations. It is shown that prudence with respect to inflation (unemployment) reduces (increases) equilibrium inflation. The overall effect depends on the relative magnitude of the preference parameters and the conditional variances of inflation and unemployment. The implications of the model are examined using cross-section data from OECD countries. . Copyright 2002, International Monetary Fund

    Development of the profession banker

Banking has evolved through history as well as the banking profession. Today, the profession of a banker has a completely different meaning than in the past. In the very beginnings of the establishment and operation of banks, the banker performed simple banking transactions. His work was appreciated and he had a reputation in society. Throughout history, the role of the banker and his place in society has changed. The changes ranged both in the field of the types of transactions that they performed in both the field of work and the social field. Today, the role and significance of a banker is completely different than it used to be. The foregoing points out, above all, the development of the economy and the needs arising from it. Banking develops very quickly and seeks to meet the needs and aspirations of both individuals and business entities. All of this requires bankers who want to pursue this profession, continuous education both in the field of professional knowledge, as well as in building competencies and perfecting personality traits. Today\u27s company demands from a banker that on the one hand it is already a "superman" who knows the offer of the bank, master personal sales and other components that contribute to marketing success. The policy of each bank is steadfastly focused on the achievement of the set goals and results of the business, and does not take into account the ability of the bankers in which it is employed. On the other hand, we witness the development of modern banking, where the role of the banker is getting smaller

Isoforms of the Na,K-ATPase are present in both axons and dendrites of hippocampal neurons in culture

    No full text
The distributions of isoforms of the Na,K-ATPase alpha subunit were determined in mature cultured hippocampal neurons and in a polarized epithelial cell line. We find that hippocampal neurons express the alpha 1 and alpha 3 isoforms in the membranes of both axons and dendrites. In contrast the alpha 1 and alpha 3 proteins are exclusively basolateral when expressed endogenously or by stable transfection in renal epithelial cells. These data suggest that epithelial cells and hippocampal neurons localize these proteins by different mechanisms. These observations contrast with those made for the vesicular stomatitis virus and the influenza glycoproteins, which are polarized in both epithelial and neuronal cells

Incentive Contracts for Central Bankers under Uncertainty: Walsh-Svensson Non-Equivalence Revisited

    No full text
We look at the implications of uncertain monetary policy preferences for the targeting and contracting approach to monetary stability. It turns out that in presence of uncertain preferences a linear incentive contract in the sense of Walsh (1995) performs better in terms of social welfare than an explicit inflation target as proposed by Svensson (1997). The reason is that, although both approaches can get rid of the inflationary bias, the impact of uncertain preferences on the variance of inflation will be considerably higher with an inflation target. We also find that on top of an optimal linear contract or target, a quadratic contract, in the sense of Rogoff's (1985) "weight-conservative" central banker, improves the outcome. In the case of an inflation target, a more conservative banker is needed than with a Walsh contract.non-linearities;economic fluctuations;inflation targets;optimal contracts

Determination of normal maxillary transverse dimension by using intercanine width and interpalatal first molar width

Background: Malocclusion in the vertical and sagittal planes is easy to observe whereas it is difficult to diagnose malocclusion in the transverse plane. There are yet no criteria defining a normal transverse occlusion. Aim: The aim of this study was to identify a ratio that defines a normal transverse occlusion. Study Design: This was a retrospective study. Materials and Methods: A total sample of 151 maxillary dental models (M = 55, F = 96) in the age range of 12-16 years were randomly selected, with 73 models in control group and 78 in the study group. All the models were mixed up and given to an operator for the measurement of intercanine width (ICW) and inter-palatal molar width (IPMW). Statistical Analysis Used : The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS software version 16.0. Chi-square test was performed to test the statistical significance difference between the groups at p ≤ 0.05. Results: Nearly 98.60% of normal arches were found to have an IPMW to ICW ratio of 1:1 ± 0.05. On further analysis, it was found that when IPMW ≥37.45 mm, then the case may be considered to have normal arches, and if the ratio between IPMW to ICW is 1.15:1 ± 0.05 or more and IPMW is <34.92 mm, then the case may be identified as deficient arch. Conclusion : The IPMW-to-ICW ratio can be used to differentiate deficient and normal arches. This hypothesis (Banker′s hypothesis) is an easy and noninvasive method, using only two parameters, developed to help clinicians in identifying normal transverse dimension
