The challenges experienced by social-care workers working with separated migrant children in residential care settings

    No full text
This study examined and analysed social care workers‟ account of their work with separated migrant children in a residential care setting. The dramatic changes in the composition of Irish society and the unprecedented increase in numbers of migrant children posed a major challenge to the government in general and the social care profession, that struggles to cope with multi-ethnicity, in particular. Studies suggest that there is a lack in the social services provided to separated migrant children while they face the challenge of integrating into the Irish culture. Irish social care professionals are confronted with new ordeals linked with disruption, control and prejudice. The professional skills, level of awareness, experience, and outcome of social care work with migrant children are part of what this research aims to explore. The objective of this study is to promoting better awareness of cross-cultural values and beliefs. With the use of qualitative research method for this study, the procedure consists of face to face and email interviews, which sought to explore the experiences, understanding and perspectives of social care practitioners in their roles. The findings in the study have emerged with three main themes: cultural differences, language difficulties, and lack of resources. These cover a variety of issues including lack of cultural foods, lack of support for religious beliefs, lack of facilities and inadequate provision of interpretation services. Support has been found to be inadequate, an absence of a legal framework for the provision of care to migrant children in residential care Ireland has been revealed. Separated migrant children are expected to adapt to the existing system in place, rather than the social care services be responsive to their multi-ethnic needs. The findings also reflect the views and personal experiences of the social care workers in their roles. Cultural experiences have been found to be more of self-learning through working with these children, rather than developed through institutionally provided trainings and workshops. Given the absence of general knowledge about African migrants in the Czech Republic, it contributes to the knowledge production of African migrants by examining the general features of their composition and structures in the Czech Republic. More primarily, this study deals with the motivation for migration among Africans who chose the Czech Republic as their destination. Understanding the determinants of African migration in the Czech Republic remains poor and insufficient, as there is little empirical study that has specifically examined the determinants of migration among Africans in the Czech Republic. Seized by Sleaze: The Siege of Corruption and a Search for Workable Options in Nigeria

    No full text
The Nigerian state presents a contradictory scenario. It is a country of immense human and material resources, yet it remains poor and grossly underdeveloped. Studies have identified two major obstacles to Nigerian’s development: widespread corruption, and the lingering money laundering scheme. Since gaining independence in 1960, Nigeria has been enduring corruption with little or no serious efforts at combating it. Corruption has become a popular language in Nigerian governance to the extent that an average government political official in Nigeria is generally believed to be corrupt in one way or the other, thereby making Nigeria one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Given the foregoing, this paper examines the phenomenon of corruption in Nigeria. It argues that the prevalence of corruption at every level impedes the prospect of development and growth in the country. It concludes that for Nigeria to make any meaningful growth as a country, corruption must be vehemently opposed and genuinely fought. It then offers workable options on how to combat what has turned out to be a national scourge

In the cesspool of corruption: The challenges of national development and the dilemma of anti-graft agencies in Nigeria

Most theoretical and analytical discourse on national development identified the virulent nature of corruption as development curse. In Nigeria, as in many other soft states, the epidemic nature of corruption and its destructive impacts on the national development has received wider attention in both national and international mass media. Similarly, scholarly literature on the culture of sleaze in many of these countries revealed the depth of the disease. Nigeria, undoubtedly remain at the front page of countries under the siege of sleaze. Its profile as one of the most corrupt nations feeds largely into the crisis of its national development. Conceptually and theoretically, corruption encompassed very distinct social problems of mismanagement of public resources, weak and dysfunctional government institutions, complex relationships between political actors and public moral and economic assets. Indeed, the curse of corruption has assumed more than tantalizingly simple act of sleaze but a clear, complex and contested reality of national underdevelopment. It explains to a large extent the abuse of public power and misuse of entrusted power for private gain in the context of attaining national development. In this paper therefore, a continuation of the literature on corruption that espouses the interplay between the culture of greedy sleaze and national development is given bolder attention. The paper analyses a broad understandings of corruption from the analytical usefulness of an effective national development imperative. It further explains the interventionist roles of the ambitious anti-graft agencies and their contemporary challenges

Unsteady Heat and Mass Transfer MHD Flow of Nano-Fluids with Buoyancy and Variable Thermal Conductivity

Abstract: Scientists and engineers have conducted a considerable lot of experimental and theoretical study to increase the productivity of industrial operations. Experimental evidence from engineers and scientists shows that heat transfer is necessary for excellent multi scale production naturally, continuous phase liquids are used to achieve thermal characteristics. However, due to the limitations of heat transmission, their significance is constrained. We present a mathematical model for unsteady heat and mass transfer in MHD flow of Nano-fluid with buoyancy and variable thermal conductivity. Using self-similar variables, the coupled non-linear system of equations governing the boundary-layer flows of Nano-fluids were converted into a two-point boundary value problem. The dsolve command with the numeric option on a real-valued two-point boundary value problem (BVP) is used to finds a numerical solution for our system of equations. Computation is performed in both hardware precision and arbitrary precision. The output of the computation is plotted using the ode plot generator odeplot and displayed using Maple plot display, and wall rate transfer is extracted. From the result, increase in thermal buoyancy, unsteadiness parameter and suction parameter are seen to increase velocity distributions. Temperature boundary layer is enhanced with increase in unsteadiness parameter, Brownian motion parameter and Eckert number while radiation, thermophoretic diffusion parameter, reactivity parameter, thermal conductivity and suction enhances species concentration.
