El Balseiro: memoria y emotividad en una institución científica argentina
No full textEl primero de agosto de 2005 fue el aniversario número 50 de la primera clase dictada en el Instituto Balseiro, un centro de formación en física e ingenierías localizado en la ciudad de Bariloche, Argentina. Ese aniversario motivó la organización de una jornada de conmemoración desarrollada en dos momentos: un acto público y un almuerzo. Esos momentos variaron en las prácticas que los configuraron. Sin embargo coincidieron en colocar como eje de festejo dos narrativas -matrices organizadoras de la experiencia- en particular: la tradición o versión legítima del pasado y la comunidad como modelo de pertenencia. Ambas narrativas, constituídas también por lo emocional, actualizaron en el seno del evento una arena de disputa respecto de la relevancia de producir ciencia y tecnología en el país. Este libro se estructura a partir de una aproximación etnográfica a la comemoración y sus objetos de festejo. Una aproximación etnográfica orientada por las potencialidades analíticas del evento definido como performance. Esto es, del evento como acto que habilita formas de representación y dramatización que muestran lecturas sobre el mundo y produce, a su vez, efectos en él.Fil: Spivak L´hoste, Ana Silvia. Struggling to improve farm biosecurity: do free advice and subsidies hit the target?
No full text4 páginas, 1 figura.Biosafety measures (BSMs) often aim at reducing the likelihood of cross-species interactions at the wildlifelivestock interface. Examples include means to segregate wild ungulates from cattle at waterholes or at
feeders. Subsidies or incentives for BSM implementation are expected to contribute to improved BSM acceptance. However, several recent experiences led us to write a cautionary commentary on the variable success of incentives in farm biosafety promotion. We list examples where, after offering farm-specific biosecurity action plans for free or subsidizing 100% of the cost of a given BSM, 25–40% of the farmers remained unwilling to invest efforts in farm biosafety and BSM maintenance. We suggest seeking a better understanding of farmers’ motivations through social science research, to train farm veterinarians on biosecurity and on how to tailor biosafety communication, and to set up formal regional risk mitigation programs including financial, logistical, and educational assistance, as well as monitoring plans, through public-private collaboration.Peer reviewe
Differential stability of 2'F-ANA*RNA and ANA*RNA hybrid duplexes: roles of structure, pseudohydrogen bonding, hydration, ion uptake and flexibility
No full text14 pags., 7 figs., 3 tabs.Hybrids of RNA with arabinonucleic acids 2′F-ANA and ANA have very similar structures but strikingly different thermal stabilities. We now present a thorough study combining NMR and other biophysical methods together with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations on a fully modified 10-mer hybrid duplex. Comparison between the solution structure of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA hybrids indicates that the increased binding affinity of 2′F-ANA is related to several subtle differences, most importantly a favorable pseudohydrogen bond (2′F-purine H8) which contrasts with unfavorable 2′-OH-nucleobase steric interactions in the case of ANA. While both 2′F-ANA and ANA strands maintained conformations in the southern/eastern sugar pucker range, the 2′F-ANA strand's structure was more compatible with the A-like structure of a hybrid duplex. No dramatic differences are found in terms of relative hydration for the two hybrids, but the ANA•RNA duplex showed lower uptake of counterions than its 2′F-ANA•RNA counterpart. Finally, while the two hybrid duplexes are of similar rigidities, 2′F-ANA single strands may be more suitably preorganized for duplex formation. Thus the dramatically increased stability of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA duplexes is caused by differencesin at least four areas, of which structure and pseudohydrogen bonding are the most important. © The Author(s) 2010. No full textEl programa de Becas de Verano del Instituto Balseiro ofrece a estudiantes universitarios avanzados o recientemente egresados de carreras de grado en Ciencias o Ingenierías la posibilidad de realizar una pasantía durante el mes de febrero. El objetivo de la misma es familiarizarse con técnicas experimentales y colaborar en tareas de investigación en laboratorios del Centro Atómico Bariloche. Anualmente, 15 estudiantes son seleccionados y reciben ayuda económica completa. Cada participante elige un único tema de investigación entre una serie de propuestas y es guiado por un grupo de investigadores del Centro Atómico Bariloche. La pasantía finaliza con la entrega de un informe y la presentación de un póster en el que se detallan los resultados obtenidos a lo largo del mes de trabaj
