Anthroponymic Nests in Latvian
Get PDFThis article deals with a Latvian first-name system, and with the given names of common origin in particular. The author (together with Dana Beņķe – a student at the University of Latvia) has collected and made “trees” of the anthroponyms having the same etymon (starting with capital letters A, Ā, B, C, Č). The purpose is to gather information about all Latvian given names which have “grown” from the same name or the same etymon, to find the time when particular name was recorded in Latvia, when it was included into name almanacs, to ascertain the contemporary usage of the name in Latvia. The largest anthroponymic nests/trees are the following: etymon name Anna (includes 82 names), Andrejs (68 names), Antonijs (58 names), Aleksandrs (51 name), Bartolomejs (48 names). Most of the alterations analysed have been coined in other languages as hypocoristic forms and have been adopted into Latvian in a ready-made form. Majority of name variants came to Latvia from or through German and Polish, but there are hypocoristic forms coined and known only in Latvian (e.g., Anna > Annuža, Ance, Annele; Barbara > Baiba). The research, which includes 1114 Latvian names, connected into “nests” or “trees” of common etymon. This article introduces with 10 such anthroponymic “trees”. The Specifics of Rare Anthroponyms in Contemporary Latvia
No full textBakalaura darbā „Reto personvārdu īpatnības mūsdienu Latvijā” analizēta reto personvārdu specifika. Darba mērķis ir izpētīt un raksturot mūsdienās reti sastopamos personvārdus Latvijā; noskaidrot to izcelsmi, kā arī nelielā mērā aplūkot to lietošanas motīvus. Lai sasniegtu izvirzīto mērķi, veikta latviešu autoru antroponīmikas un ārzemju autoru socioantroponīmiskās literatūras studēšana, izveidota reto personvārdu kartotēka un analizētas tās vienības no derivācijas un cilmes viedokļa. Darbā aplūkotā tematika ir ļoti aktuāla, jo latviešu antroponīmika galvenokārt pētīta vēsturiskā, ne mūsdienu aspektā; temats saistīts ar socioantroponīmikas jomu, kas ir samērā jauna onomastikas apakšnozare, arī reto personvārdu pētniecība Latvijā nav attīstīta. Bakalaura darbā iegūtie rezultāti ļauj spriest par reto personvārdu Latvijā dažādību un izcelsmi.Bachelor paper “The Specifics of Rare Anthroponyms in Contemporary Latvia” presents the analysis of rare anthroponyms. The aim of this paper is to explore and characterize anthroponyms, which are rarely occurring in Latvia, find out their origin and briefly consider the motives of their usage. To reach the set aim, author has carried out studies of Latvian authors’ anthroponymical and foreign authors’ socioanthroponymical literature, and created a file of rare anthroponyms, which were analyzed by the view of derivation and origin. The topicality of this paper is great, because anthroponymics in Latvia has mainly been studied from the historical, not contemporary point of view. Paper’s subject is linked to socioanthroponymics, which is a relatively new branch of onomastics. Moreover, research of rare anthroponyms is not a developed field in Latvia. The obtained outcome of this paper allows judging the variety and origin of the rare anthroponyms in Latvia
The Derivation Tendencies of Rare Latvian Personal Names
No full textMaģistra darbā „Reto latviešu personvārdu darināšanas tendences” savākti un analizēti 700 retie personvārdi. Darba mērķis ir turpināt mūsdienās Latvijā reti sastopamo personvārdu izpēti, noskaidrot iespējamos to rašanās iemeslus latviešu antroponimikonā, analizēt tos no semantiski derivatīvā aspekta, kā arī mēģināt skaidrot to cilmi. Lai sasniegtu izvirzītos mērķus, studēta latviešu un ārzemju autoru teorētiskā literatūra par mūsdienu antroponīmiskajiem procesiem, ārzemju pieredze salīdzināta ar situāciju Latvijā, veidota reto personvārdu kartotēka un izstrādāts personvārdu semantiski derivatīvais iedalījums. Iegūtie rezultāti parāda reto latviešu personvārdu darināšanas un aizgūšanas tendences.

The aim of this thesis is to continue the research on rare anthroponyms in Latvia, to clarify possible reasons behind such names being added to Latvian anthroponymicon, to analyze them by the view of semantic derivation, and also to try to interpret the origin of these personal names. To reach the set aim, author has analyzed Latvian and foreign theoretical literature on contemporary anthroponymical processes, compared foreign experience with the situation in Latvia, created a file of rare anthroponyms and formed a semantic-derivative classification of personal names. The obtained outcome of this thesis points to the tendencies of formation and borrowing rare Latvian personal names.

Microtoponyms of Ropaži Region
No full textMaģistra darba nosaukums ir „Ropažu novada āru vārdi”. Darba mērķis ir vispusīga Ropažu novada āru vārdu analīze. Darba uzdevumos ietilpst: 1. Savākt āru vārdus jeb nelielo ģeogrāfisko objektu, piemēram, dīķu, kalnu, mežu, pļavu, purvu, ceļu, taku, dūksnāju, tiltu un tamlīdzīgus nosaukumus; 2. Analizēt tos no semantiskā, etimoloģiskā un derivatīvā viedokļa; 3. Izdarīt secinājumus balstoties uz zināšanām par Ropažu novada izloksnes īpatnībām, dabu, kultūru un vēsturi. Darbā analizēti 165 Ropažu novada āru vārdi, kas iegūti no teicējiem, kartēm, Latvijas Ģeogrāfiskās informācijas aģentūras vietvārdu datubāzes, kā arī no J. Endzelīna „Latvijas vietu vārdu” 1. daļas (1922) Ropažu novada vākuma. 84 no āru vārdiem citos avotos nav atrodami. Toponīmi ir salīdzināti ar J. Endzelīna „Latvijas PSR vietvārdu vārdnīcu” (I 1956, II 1961), „Latvijas vietvārdu vārdnīcu (Paeglis – Piķu-)” (2003), „Latvijas vietvārdu vārdnīcu (Pilaci – Pracapole)” (2006), „Latvijas vietvārdu vārdnīcu (Pracirika – Puožu)” (2010).

To find out microtoponyms, for example, names of pounds, mountains, woods, meadows, roads, paths, bridges etc.; 2. Analize them from semantic, etymological, derivative point of view; 3. To draw conclusions which are based on knowledges about Ropaži region. It is analysed 165 place-names, which are got from informants, maps, database of Latvian Geospatial Information Agency and J. Endzelins „Latvijas vietu vārdi. I ”. 84 of microtoponyms aren’t published before. Toponyms are compared with „Latvijas PSR vietu vārdi” (I 1956, II 1961, author – J. Endzelīns), „Latvijas vietvārdu vārdnīca (Paeglis – Piķu-)” (2003), „Latvijas vietvārdu vārdnīca (Pilaci – Pracapole)” (2006), „Latvijas vietvārdu vārdnīca (Pracirika – Puožu)” (2010).

Toponims of Ropaži Region
No full textBakalaura darba nosaukums ir „Ropaţu novada toponīmi”. Darba mērķis – vispusīga Ropaţu novada vietvārdu analīze, salīdzinot mūsdienu situāciju ar agrākos vākumos konstatētajiem faktiem. Darba uzdevumos ietilpst savākt toponīmus (ciemu, upju, kalnu, māju, purvu u.c. nosaukumus), analizēt tos no semantiskā, etimoloģiskā, derivatīvā viedokļa; sistematizēt tos un izdarīt secinājumus. Darbā ir analizēti 140 autores savākti Ropaţu vietvārdi. 63 no tiem citos publicētajos avotos nav sastopami. Analizējamais materiāls ir salīdzināts ar J. Endzelīna „Latvijas vietu vārdu” I. daļā (1922) atrodamo Ropaţu novada toponīmu vākumu, J. Endzelīna „Latvijas PSR vietvārdu vārdnīcas” datiem (I, II, 1956, 1961) , „Latvijas vietvārdu vārdnīcu (Paaglis – Piķu-)” (2003), „”Latvijas vietvārdu vārdnīcu (Pilaci – Pracapole)” (2006).

Krājums sagatavots Valsts pētījumu programmā „Latviešu valoda”.The collection of scientific articles “Onomastikas pētījumi II / Onomastic Investigations II” unites researches about proper names from Latvia, Lithuania, USA, Belarus, New Zealand, Russia, Poland, Spain, Hungary and Germany. More than twenty articles cover different topics such as personal name change dynamics in Latvia, the impact of personal names on place names, Livonian traces in Latvian place names, the role of place names while facing extinction, the marks left by wars in place names, the historical place names in 17th century, the interpretation of “sāmal-” and „sāman-” in place names and strategies used by Latvian enterprises while forming their brand names. Moreover, articles reveal the division of place names in New Zealand according to the structure, the interpretation of the origin of the place name Rome from Germany, the topic of place names in digital environment, the variety of proper names of waters, the linkage between toponyms and the physical environment in Spain, the analysis of proper names in fiction from USA and Poland, the proper names researchers from Belarus have found in ancient Smolenska agreements with Riga, the use of the suffix “-ut-“ in personal names in Lithuania, the role of place names while treating questions of dialectology in Hungary, etc.
