Teaching Index Numbers to economists
Get PDFEconomic statistics are frequently reported in the form of index numbers. This article considers how the field of Index Numbers should be approached in the teaching of a general economic degree. While the topic finds a natural home in statistics modules, it is emphasised that the area can also be referred to in the teaching of other areas of economics. It is also emphasised that the differences between Index Numbers theory and the practice of compiling economic statistics such as inflation can help students gain a better understanding of applied economic statistics. Methods for assessing learning in the area are also considered and available material to support teaching is also summarised

No full textCatching the effect of substitution behaviour in a Consumer Price Index (CPI) as good as possible is a goal pursued by statistical agencies throughout the world. The difference between a CPI and a certain target cost-of-living index is called substitution bias. Balk and Diewert (2003) considered the substitution bias of a Lowe Consumer Price Index; see also CPIManual (2004: Chapter 17). The present paper considers the substitution bias of a Cobb-Douglas (or Geometric Young) CPI, and compares the two price indices with respect to their substitution bias. This survey discusses the basics of productivity measurement and shows that one can dispense with most if not all of the usual, neoclassical assumptions. Contextualized BERT Sentence Embeddings for Author Profiling: The Cost of Performances
No full textThe necessity to know information about the real identity of an online subject is a highly relevant issue in User Profiling, especially for analysis from digital sources such as social media. The digital identity of a user does not always present explicit data about her offline life such as age, gender, work, and more. This problem makes the task of user profiling complex and incomplete. For many years this issue has received a considerable amount of attention from the whole community, which has developed several solutions, also based on machine learning, to estimate user characteristics. The increasing diffusion of deep learning approaches has allowed, on the one hand, to obtain a considerable increase in predictive performance, but on the other hand, to have available models that cannot be interpreted and that require very high computational power. Considering the validity of new pre-trained language models on extensive data for resolving many natural language processing and classification tasks, we decided to propose a BERT-based approach (BERT-DNN) also for the author profiling task. In a first analysis, we compared the results obtained by our model with them of more classical approaches. As a follow, a critical analysis was carried out. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches also in terms of resources needed to run them. The results obtained by our model are encouraging in terms of reliability but very disappointing if we consider the computational power required for running it
