Effects of the rootstock rosa canina var. laxa on the growth and development of five miniature rose cultivars
Generally, in Republic Kosovo rose propagation by budding resulted in about 100-130 thousand seedlings during a year. In Kosovo the most frequent rootstocks for roses are species Rosa canina’Laxa’. Miniature varieties of roses (Rosa hybrida L.) are among the most important garden plants in our country. The goal of this research was to study the level of compatability for some Miniature Roses, a same rootstock of Rosa canina 'Laxa'. Roses are conventionally propagated by cutting, budding, grafting and layering. Cutting and budding would be the simplest way to increase the desirable rose varieties. Plant propagation by grafting is one of the oldest horticultural practices and one that has intrigued the gardening and non-gardening public alike. In this study there are included five miniature rose cultivars: ‘Zwergkönig’, ‘Roulettii’, ‘Bianco‘, ‘Fire Princess’, ‘Dresden Doll’. The experiment was conducted during 2010-2011, tested in a commercial farm in Prizren, Kosovo. During the vegetation these parameters were measured: number and diameter of roots, length of flower stems, diameter of structural shoots, number of flowers etc. There was found a significant level of compatibility between rootstock with all tested cultivars
Garden Roses:Large blooms, compact, lots of color in the landscape architecture
Garden roses are predominantly hybrid roses that are grown as ornamental plants in private or public gardens. A rose (Rosa canina L.) is a woody perennial flowering plant. There are over a hundred species and thousands of cultivars. This group of plants can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that often have thorns. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white, yellows, reds, pinks and purples. Landscape Roses (Rosa x hybrida) are a modern category of rose developed mainly for mass planting. They are collectively known as shrub roses. In the late 20th century, traditional hybrid tea and floribunda rose varieties fell out of favor amid gardeners and landscapers, as they are often labor and chemical intensive plants susceptible to a myriad of pest and disease problems. Most landscape roses having the following characteristics:Lower growing habit, usually under 60 cm;repeat flowering; flower colour; fragrant; disease and pest resistance. Rose in Kosovo has been cultivated for centuries and was one of the most loveliest ornamental plants and growing in parks, family gardens, urban cities, cut roses, etc. Some representative garden roses species in the landscape urban structure in Kosovo are: Rosa floribunda, Rosa grandiflora, Ingrid bergman, Eifel tower Galia, Vicendal, Princess de Monaco, Duble delaght, Lincoln, Don juan, Rosa alba, etc

Kosovo has new environmental legislation, created mainly during the last decade. This legislation is generally focused on alignment with EU standards because it relies on the same principles as European environmental. The number of protected nature areas in Kosovo in 2017 is 184 and includes an area of 126,119.29 ha or 11.56 % of Kosovo\u27s total surface area. Within these areas there are:19 Strict Nature Reserves, 156 Nature Monuments. The largest surface area of protected areas consists of National Parks such as: “Bjeshkët e Nemuna” and “Sharri” Nature Park, “Pashtrik Mountain and Lake Vermica”, Protected Landscapes “Germia” and Natural Monument of Special Importance “Ujëvarat e Mirushës”. Because of the geographical position and climate conditions, as well as the historical development of flora and vegetation, Kosovo is a very rich region of species, among which a large number of them are endemic, steno-endemic and relict plants. According to law NO. 04/L - 086 for the National Park Bjeshket e Nemuna includes an area of 62,488 ha. and lies in the territory of the municipalities: Gjakova, Junik, Deçan, Peja and Istog within the boundaries defined by this law
EU Environmental laws - Nature protection and biodiversity directives
This contribution illustrates the development of the environmental law of the EU from an international environmental law perspective, in particular the directives for nature protection and bidiversity. Directives for nature protection and biodiversity aims to maintain and improve biodiversity in the EU through the conservation of natural habitats and the protection of wild fauna and flora. A large number of species of wild birds naturally occurring in the European territory of the Member States are declining in number, very rapidly in some cases. This decline represents a serious threat to the conservation of the natural environment, particularly because of the biological balances threatened thereby. The Habitats Directive was adopted in 1992 to help maintain biodiversity. It protects over 1000 animals and plant species and over 200 types of habitat. It also established the EU-wide Natura 2000 (Birds and Habitats Directives) network of protected areas. Natura 2000 is a network of core breeding and resting sites for rare and threatened species, and some rare natural habitat types which are protected in their own right. It stretches across all 28 EU countries, both on land and at sea. Directive 2009/147/ec of the european parliament and of the council on the conservation of nature, establishing:Conservation is aimed at the long-term protection and management of natural resources as an integral part of the heritage of the peoples of Europe
Sustainable Water Resources Management Policy in Kosovo
The purpose of this paper is to study the role of environmental policies for the protection of water in the Republic of Kosovo, the challenges in the management of water resources for sustainable development and the harmonization with the Water Framework Directive in the European Union. Water plays an important role in determining aquatic ecosystems and public health. Water pollution in Kosovo is causing damage to ecosystems, affects the deterioration of the water in rivers and is considered a potential risk for the environment and health. The work is based on the qualitative and comparative method which is based on the collection and processing of data focused on the legal basis and the Institutional framework as well as the directive of the European Union on waters. The legal basis for the protection and management of water in Kosovo is based on the Kosovo Water Law, which deals with the administration, planning, protection and institutional responsibilities in the field of water and water resources. The main document that plans the use of water resources in Kosovo is the Kosovo Water Strategy 2017-2036, this document is a legal obligation and aims to provide a sustainable and integrated development for the water field in Kosovo. The implementation of international standards for the protection of water resources preserves the health and well-being of citizens, fulfills environmental criteria and raises the image of Kosovo
Kosovo environmental legislation for the protection of nature and air quality
The main features regarding the natural heritage are of common interest to the Republic of Kosovo and as matter of a fact enjoy special protection. Despite the fact that Kosovo is a small country, it is characterized by rich nature, landscapes, diverse flora and fauna. Meanwhile, drafting effective policies concerning nature protection, increasing the area of protected areas, and increasing the quality of management of these areas, we fulfill the obligation to give future generations the opportunity to enjoy the rare natural values of Kosovo. In this regard, the Law on Nature Protection, aims to regulate the system of protection and general conservation of nature and its values such as: protection, conservation, renewal and sustainable use of natural resources, in a state of natural balance. Meanwhile, The Law on Protection of Air from Pollution aims to regulate and guarantee the right of citizens to live in a clean air environment, protecting human health, fauna, flora, alongside natural and cultural values of the environment. According to this law, pollutants are substances directly or indirectly penetrate into the air and as a consequence cause harmful effects on human health, flora, fauna and cultural heritage.Furthermore, Kosovo has established its new environmental legislation, which has been drafted during the last decade. Furthermore, this legislation is primarily focused on implementation of EU standards, owing to the fact it is based on the same principles as European environmental legislation. Moreover, environmental legislation continues to be in an intensive process of supplementation and improvement, to respond effectively to the needs of contemporary environmental protection policie
The Impact of Evergreen Hedges Plants (Thuja occidentalis L. and Cupressocyparis leylandii L.) in Garden Structure
Evergreen hedges are a popular choice to have in the garden or as part of outdoor space. They provide year-round leaf cover and a consistent, attractive, full hedge look. Evergreen shrubs are favorable with gardeners where privacy is required. Thuja occidentalis species are the most popular hedge garden plants grown in Kosovo. Cupressocyparis Leylandii is a fast-growing hedge plant that has the quickest growth rate of approximately 75-90 cm per year. Leylandii, also known as Cupressocyparis, is a stunning hedge plant that will add elegance in garden. The purpose of our work was the study of characteristics of development stage, ornamental values and used hedge garden cultivars as integral components in landscape architecture and urban design in Kosovo. During the 2018-2020 period, the subjects of the research in our experimental field, Two evergreen plants with two cultivars have been studied:Thuja occidentalis \u27Smaragd\u27 and Cupressocyparis leylandii. The experimental design was ’randomized block’ with four replications and 200 plants for each variety. Distance of planting was 100 x 35 cm. The growth period of the plants in urban landscape design were studied from April to October under Kosovo climate conditions. For a good architecture of the urban landscape, the studied cultivars of Thuja sp. and Leylandii species, should be included in the hedge planting structure
Decorative effects of annual plants (Petunia hybrida L.and Begonia semperflorens L.) in urban environments
The purpose of our work was the study of characteristics of flowering stage, decorative values and used annual plant (Petunia hybrida and Begonia semperflorens cultivars as integral components in landscape architecture and urban design in Kosovo. Bedding plants can be annuals, biennials or perennials. Annuals are plants which are grown from seed, produce flowers and seed and die in one growing season. Annual plants with their seemingly infinite variety of flower color and plant form fit into almost any landscape situation. During the 2018-2019 period, the subjects of the research in our experimental field two bedding plants with three cultivars have been studied. The experimental design was \u27randomized block′ with four replications and 300 plants for each variety. Distance of planting was 25 x 20 cm. The growth period of the plants in urban landscape design were studied from May to October. For all cultivars the blooming begins in May. There exist different number of flowers (2-3) per plant. The number of flowers per plant begins to increase in June and the highest is achieved at the cultivar Begonia \u27Charm Red\u27 and cultivar Petunia \u27Million Bells\u27. The studied cultivars have an impact on urban landscape architecture, achieving the maximum aesthetic appearance, with beautiful colors (leaves, flowers) at homes or in urban environments. Bedding plants have manifested high decorative values in urban landscape under the Kosovo climate condition. For a good architecture of the urban landscape, the studied cultivars of petunia and Begonia, should be included in the hedge planting structure. In the Republic of Kosovo there is an increased the tendency for environmental regulation with different ornamental plants, in parallel with the expansion of urban centers, large cities, new houses, residential areas
