Detection of abnormal cervical cytology in Papanicolaou smears
Background: Cervical cytology by Papanicolaou (Pap) smears is an effective means of screening for cervical premalignant and malignant conditions. Cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer remain important health problems for women worldwide.
Aim: To study the role of Pap smear in detecting premalignant and malignant lesions of cervix; and to determine the prevalence of various lesions.
Materials and Methods: This study is based on 300 patients who attended the out-patient Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Pap smears were prepared from patients presenting with complaints like vaginal discharge, post-coital bleeding, inter-menstrual bleeding, dyspareunia, and pain lower abdomen. After fixation and staining, each smear was carefully examined.
Results: Epithelial cell abnormalities were found in 5% smears, atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) in 0.3%, squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) in 3.4% which includes low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) (2.7%) and high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) 0.7%. Invasive carcinoma was seen in 1.3% cases. Mean age of the patients with diagnosis of LSIL was 32.3 years and for HSIL, it was 40.5 years. The mean age of the patients with invasive carcinoma was 57 years.
Conclusion: Premalignant and malignant lesions of cervix are not uncommon in our set up and can be diagnosed early by Pap smears
Pulmonary tuberculosis and COVID-19 coinfection : Hickam’s Dictum revisited
COVID-19 and pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) coinfection is associated with increased mortality and presents a unique diagnostic challenge to the clinician. We describe three cases of newly
diagnosed PTB in COVID-19 patients treated at our centre and their clinical and radiological
features. The challenges associated with diagnosis and management are also explored. Patient 1
was a case of smear positive, endobronchial tuberculosis incidentally diagnosed due to CT
changes, and eventually made good recovery. Patient 2 was a case of COVID-19 who succumbed
but was diagnosed posthumously due to a positive sputum culture for tuberculosis. Patient 3
showed radiographic features of PTB and was treated empirically for TB. In conclusion, COVID-19
and PTB coinfection should be suspected in the presence of constitutional symptoms, prior
immunocompromised states, prolonged respiratory symptoms or fever, or unresolved radiological
abnormalities, more so in regions where TB is endemic.

One thing that will immediately become apparent to the reader of this edition of JMH, the second of 2019, is the extent to which the journal has become truly international. With our first article, “The Separation of Directors and Managers”, two of the authors are from France (Blanche Segrestin and Armand Hatchuel) and one is from the UK (Andrew Johnston). The authors for our second piece, “Taking Britain from Darkness into Light”, (Sandra van der Laan, Lee Moerman and David Campbell) are from Australia. Those for the third (Nicholous Deal, Rene Arseneault and Albert Mills), who have authored “Reading ‘Canadian’ Management in Context”, are based in Canada and Finland. The authors for the fourth piece, “The Narrative Cleansing of Andrew Carnegie”, are from the USA (John Humphreys, Mario Hayek, Milorad Novicevic, Stephanie Pane Haden and Jared Pickens). With the fifth article, “A Columbian Classic Management Thinker”, we have authors based in Columbia in South America (Luis Antonio Orozoc and Olga Lucia Anzola). The authors for the sixth article, “Researching the History of Marginalized Issues in Management Research” – Sanjukta Choudhury Kaul, Manjit Singh Sandhu and Quamrul Alam – are currently based in Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia, respectively. Estimation of ESR, CRP, TLC and DLC in 200 Suspected Cases of Acute Appendicitis
ABSTRACT The most common cause of acute abdomen even today is acute appendicitis. An inflammatory disorder, several laboratory factors contributing to its inflammatory responses are used for diagnosis. To estimate the value of ESR, CRP, TLC and DLC in 200 suspected patients of acute appendicitis in both sex of different age groups. The present study were performed on 200 patients who have been clinically diagnosed as a case of acute appendicitis and were taken up for emergency appendectomy.Apart from the routine investigations all the 200 cases were subjected specifically to the following four investigations i.e. ESR, CRP, TLC and DLC. All cases were subjected for histopathological examinations, which is considered as gold standard for the final diagnosis. Age wise maximum number of patients were in third decade (35%), followed by second decade. Male predominance (60%) was seen in study. Negative appendectomy was done in 20% cases. In present study association of ESR, CRP, TLC and DLC and acute appendicitis was shown to be significant with value. Acute appendicitis remains a diagnosis based primarily on history and clinical examination. Clinical examination is indispensable in diagnosing acute appendicitis and all the above investigations complement clinical skills and cannot replace it
A Systematic Review on Acute Leukemia Detection Using Deep Learning Techniques
Acute leukemia is a cancer that starts in the bone marrow and is characterized by an abnormal growth of white blood cells. It is a disease that affects people all over the world. Hematologist study blood smears from patients to appropriately diagnose this anomaly. The methods used for diagnosis can be influenced by factors including the hematologist's experience and level of weariness, resulting in nonstandard results and even inaccuracies. The automatic detection of acute leukemia will produce robust results with precise accuracy. This systematic review gives a thorough investigation of the deep learning method for the classification and detection of acute leukemia. The systematic review adopted the PRISMA principle. Four online open source databases were utilized to find comparable articles, and a query featuring relevant keywords was created for the search purpose. Relevant publications were chosen from the search results based on inclusion and exclusion criteria to find answers to the four evolving research questions. The findings of the various studies were examined using the research questions that had been created.F1score and accuracy have been used as a performance matrix for the comparison purpose of CNMC and ALL IDB and self-acquired datasets. Consequently, various challenges faced by the authors have been highlighted. This systematic review article consists of a summary of the various automated detection and classification of acute leukemia in terms of four research questions. Different steps before classification like preprocessing, augmentation, segmentation, and feature extraction with various challenges faced by the author's different datasets and various challenges have been discussed in this paper.FALSEsciescopu
