Invisible Hand-in-Glove? The Uneasy Intersections of Friedrich Hayek’s Neoliberalism and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s Bahá’í Economics

    No full text
The theological rendering of economics in the Bahá’í Faith—particularly from ‘Abdu’l-Bahá—advocated progressive taxation, a strong welfare state, the abolition of trusts, and the redistribution of wealth. These orientations directly diverge from “neoliberal” economic theory, especially as articulated by Frederick Hayek: concerns that social justice exacerbates poverty and claims that progressive taxation is “discrimination.” Despite these seemingly antithetical orientations, there has been a slow and tentative, if not uneasy, meeting of Bahá’í and neoliberal ideals in global organizations and scholarship. Through a comparative analysis of the writings of both ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and Friedrich Hayek, I first illuminate the fundamental disagreements on economy and society between Bahá’í theology and neoliberalism. Second, I cover recent scholarship on the moralization of markets and the sacralization of financial actors in order to contextualize the historical and contemporary unions of theology and economy. Third, I outline how ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s theological vision and Hayek’s neoliberal theories accrete around four mutual worldviews, which can tempt hermeneutic deemphases of the fundamental divergences in Bahá’í and neoliberal logics: (1) the duality of human nature, (2) the limits of materialist reason, (3) the apotheosis of the market and self-love, and (4) sacrificial submission to transcendent authority

In this diploma thesis we explored the importance of marketing communication, with which companies establish contact with clients and other enterprises. We closely examined individual marketing communication tools, such as personal selling, advertising, sales promotion, public relations and direct marketing. Each of the mentioned tools has its role in the communication plan. We can use them individually, but for greater efficiency, it is better to use all the tools that connect with each other at the same time. At Novatel, the analysis showed that the main form of communication is personal selling, with which they try to connect with clients and gain their trust. The company believes that personal contacts are the best way to form a successful business relationship that provides the clients with what they need and demand. In addition to personal selling, they also use some other elements of marketing communication to achieve their goals. We also came to the conclusion that Novatel is still facing some shortcomings in the field of marketing communication, which they will try to eliminate in the future

The Creation of Bahá’u’lláh and the New Era: “Textbook” of the Bahá’í Faith

This article examines the creation of Dr. John E. Esslemont’s seminal work Bahá’u’lláh and the New Era (1923), the first comprehensive introductory book in English on the Bahá’í Faith. Drawing particularly on the extensive correspondence between Esslemont and Luṭfu’lláh Ḥakím, the article traces Esslemont’s journey from his initial encounter with the Bahá’í teachings in 1914 to the book’s publication and subsequent global impact. The unique involvement of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and Shoghi Effendi in reviewing and correcting the manuscript is highlighted, along with Esslemont’s collaboration with prominent early Bahá’ís. Rather than specifically addressing the book’s content, this paper examines its preparation and publication, its rapid translation and worldwide dissemination in multiple languages. Finally, Esslemont’s legacy is considered, both through his book and his personal example as a pioneering Western adherent of the Bahá’í Faith. Esslemont’s original spelling of Bahá’í names and terminology in his correspondence has been maintained

    ADOLESCENTS AND ANOREXIA NERVOSA

Theoretical background: Anorexia nervosa (and other eating disorders) speak about many different things, about what was an individual spent in their childhood and adolescence. They talk about everything, except about the food. It is the attack to itself and is a sign of surrender before too severe internal and external pressures. So in the period of adolescence it is very important to be in a positive family atmosphere, understanding and incentive, because every one of us needs a safe space. Methodology: We used a descriptive method. For the empirical part we used a qualitative method of work and an anonymous questionnaire, which contained 14 questions and which included 104 students from third and the fourth year of "Srednja zdravstvena šola Celje". The purpose of the study was to present the adolescent with anorexia nervosa and the role of parents and nurses in the treatment process. Results: The results has showed, that the students who took the survey, don’t know a lot about anorexia nervosa. Only 23 (22%) respondents students, choosed all the possible answers on the survey about the signs of the disease. Only 5 (5%) students were close to the right answer about the consequences of the disease. When we asked about their physical self-esteem, the results showed that we can say, that the average adolescents has accepted as such they are, so they are satisfied with their physical appearance. Conclusion: We have found that students, who attend "Srednja zdravstvena šola Celje" aren\u27t enough informed about the disease anorexia nervosa. Nurse has a very important role for teaching and raising awareness and she carries for health educational work at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels

“This Is a Progression, Not Conversion”: Narratives of First-Generation Bahá’ís

    No full text
This paper discusses the concept of religious conversion in the Bahá’í Faith through conversion narratives of first-generation Bahá’ís. Through life story interviews, the converts narrate their process of becoming Bahá’í as “not converting”, which aligns with a principle of the Bahá’í Faith called “progressive revelation”. Religious conversion has frequently been described in the literature as a radical, sudden, dramatic transformation–often following a personal crisis and seemingly entails a definite break with one’s former identity. Consequently, religious conversion studies have focused on the subjective experiences of the rapid changes in the lives and identities of individuals. However, such perspectives have, until now, focused mainly on Christianity and Christian models and have not adequately addressed religious conversion models in other Abrahamic religions, such as the Bahá’í Faith. The paradigm of conversion focuses our attention on the ways particular theologies shape life stories of conversion and what kind of narratives social scientists will include in the corpus of conversion. Therefore, this research asks to broaden the social scientific paradigms of religious conversion through the case study of the Bahá’í Faith

    Bah in Singapore English

    No full text
Colloquial Singapore English ('Singlish') is well known, among other features, for its class of discourse particles derived from substrate languages. These particles have been ascribed to various languages, chief among them Southern Min, Malay, and Cantonese. Previous research has also shown this class to be open to newcomers, with Lim (2007) concentrating on particles of Cantonese origin appearing in the 1980s. In this paper, I present evidence of a previously undocumented particle,  bah , whose origins are suspected in Mandarin, a variety that has hitherto contributed only little to the grammatical structure of Singlish. Using corpus data complemented by data from online discussion forums, as well as responses to an online survey, the paper describes  bah 's pragmatic meanings and the socio-historical and sociolinguistic reasons for its emergence

‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s Tablet to Amír Khán: Expanding the Scope of the Bahá’í Doctrine of Progressive Revelation to Include and Engage Indigenous Spiritual Traditions

    No full text
The Bahá’í doctrine of progressive revelation, while universal in principle, has been limited, in scope and application, by what has previously been described as “Arya-Semiticentrism”—with a paradigmatic focus on Semitic religions (the “Abrahamic Faiths” of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, along with the Bábí and Bahá’í Faiths), and the so-called “Aryan” religions (Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Hinduism) to the relative exclusion of Indigenous religions. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s Tablet to Amír Khán may offer a solution and resolution, to wit: “Undoubtedly in those regions [the Americas] the Call of God must have been raised in ancient times, but it hath been forgotten now.” This paper provides an exegesis of the Tablet to Amír Khán—an authenticated, authoritative Bahá’í text, with an authorized translation. Our basic premise is that, just as ‘Abdu’l-Bahá has “added” the Buddha and Krishna to the Bahá’í list of “Manifestations of God,” ‘Abdu’l-Bahá has also “added” the principle of Indigenous Messengers of God to the Americas—without naming principals (i.e., the names of individual Indigenous “Wise Ones”), thereby demonstrating that ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s Tablet to Amír Khán effectively expands the scope of the Bahá’í doctrine of progressive revelation to include and engage Indigenous spiritual traditions
