    Novel Paradigms in the Cultural Heritage Digitization with Self and Custom-Built Equipment

    In the field of the Cultural Heritage (CH), image-based 2D and 3D digital acquisition is today the most common technique used to create digital replicas of existing artifacts. This is carried out for many reasons, such as the following: research, analysis, preservation, conservation, communication, and valorization. These activities usually require complementary specialized equipment, tailored to specific purposes in order to achieve the desired results. This equipment is not easy-to-find on the market, it is not always affordable for museums operators; it is sometimes expensive, and it usually needs tricky customizations. However, the development in recent years of more generalized, versatile, and affordable instruments and technologies has led to new approaches, leveraging a new generation of low-cost, adaptable equipment. This paper presents custom-made equipment following this new path, designed to provide optimized results through calibrated tools alongside the software to make it work. The essay focuses specifically on the self-production of instruments for the digital reproduction of ancient drawings, manuscripts, paintings, and other museum artifacts and their transformative impact on digitization techniques. The outcomes of self and custom-built equipment specifically produced for the contexts described in this paper highlight their potential to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, facilitate scholarly research, enhance conservation efforts, and promote cultural exchange. The final goal is to propose inexpensive equipment that is easy to use (even by not specifically trained operators) and that provides remarkable quality

    Distributed wireless-based control strategy through Selective Negative Derivative Feedback algorithm

    In this study the use of many stand-alone devices is considered for active vibration control. A stand-alone device represents a control unit which is able to independently perform the vibration control task, since it is embedded with sensors, an inertial actuator and a microcontroller, in which the control algorithm is implemented. The aim of this architecture is to improve the performance of a decentralized control strategy through a partial sharing of data between devices, without the use of cables. The proposed algorithm also aims to avoid instability phenomena related to the dynamics of inertial actuators. First, the formulation of the modified Negative Derivative Feedback resonant controller is derived; then, the steps of the control strategy are explained, which are based on a preliminary modal identification of the structure and an automatic assignment of a compensator for each resonance frequency to be controlled.     The influence of family ownership dispersion on debt level in privately held firms

    The aim of this article is to investigate the financing behavior of privately held firms along the dispersion of family ownership. Drawing on the socio-emotional wealth perspective, we argue that debt levels are contingent on the degree of ownership dispersion among family members. Based on a sample of 2451 observations, in a 10-year time frame, our results reveal the existence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between debt level and intra-family ownership dispersion. We demonstrate that this relationship is moderated by the generational involvement that inverts it in later generations

    A comparative study of form and theology in the works of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil

    In this comparative study of the form and theology of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil I interrogate how Weil's philosophical writings and her theology illuminate O'Connor's use of both narrative and non-fictional forms, and her Catholicism. The Introduction analyses how Weil's concept of superposed reading provides a new method of approaching both O'Connor, her writings, and O'Connor studies, and focuses on how such apparently different women interconnect. Chapter One explores how both Weil and O'Connor attempt to write their theologies on the souls of their readers yet are each subject to constraints imposed by form. Weil's concept of locating equilibrium between incommensurates is discussed, and her distinctively philosophical approach to fictions and fictionality is used to investigate O'Connor's notion of prophetic fictions and the writer's role. Chapter Two assesses how both writers revivify Christian paradoxes. Weil's monstrous concept of affiiction, and O'Connor's use of the grotesque genre to jolt secular man into an awareness of the sacred are scrutinised. Chapter Three studies how both writers consider an encounter between God and man is possible through the action of grace. My Conclusion interrogates how Weil's work can deepen our understanding of O'Connor's writings, and examines how successful O'Connor is at realising a truly Christian literature. I conclude that despite being a writer of powerful fictions, O'Connor can not be totally successful in her mission as writer-prophet because ultimately fiction escapes orthodoxy

    Design of a Non-Reactive Warm Rig With Real Lean-Premix Combustor Swirlers and Film-Cooled First Stage Nozzles

    Modern industrial gas turbines typically employ lean-premix combustors, which can limit pollutant emissions thanks to premixed flames, while sustaining high turbine inlet temperatures that increase the single-cycle thermal efficiency. As such, gas-turbine first stage nozzles can be characterized by a highly-swirled and temperature-distorted inlet flow field. However, due to several sources of uncertainty during the design phase, wide safety margins are commonly adopted, having a direct impact on engine performance and efficiency. Therefore, aiming at increasing the knowledge on combustor-turbine interaction and improving standard design practices, a non-reactive test rig composed of real hardware was assembled at the University of Florence, Italy. The rig, accommodating three lean-premix swirlers within a combustion chamber and two first stage film-cooled nozzles of a Baker Hughes heavy-duty gas turbine, is operated in similitude conditions. The rig has been designed to reproduce the real engine periodic flow field on the central vane channel, also allowing for measurements far enough from the lateral walls. The periodicity condition on the central sector was achieved by the proper design of both the angular profile and pitch value of the tailboards with respect to the vanes, which was carried out in a preliminary phase via a Design of Experiments procedure. In addition, circular ducts needed to be installed at the injectors outlet section to preserve the non-reactive swirling flow down to the nozzles’ inlet plane. The combustor-turbine interface section has been experimentally characterized in nominal operating conditions as per the temperature, velocity and pressure fields by means of a five-hole pressure probe provided with a thermocouple, installed on an automatic traverse system. To study the evolution of the combustor outlet flow through the vanes and its interaction with the film-cooling flow, such measurements have been replicated also downstream of the vanes’ trailing edge. This work allowed for designing and providing preliminary data on a combustor simulator capable of equipping and testing real hardware film-cooled nozzles of a heavy-duty gas turbine. Ultimately, the activity sets the basis for an extensive test campaign aimed at characterizing the metal temperature, film effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient at realistic aerothermal conditions. In addition, and by leveraging experimental data, this activity paves the way for a detailed validation of current design practices as well as more advanced numerical methodologies such as Scale-Adaptive Simulations of the integrated combustor-turbine domain

    Modelling Strategies for the Prediction of Hot Streak Generation in Lean Burn Aeroengine Combustors

    The accurate prediction of the fluid dynamic conditions at the exit of gas turbine combustors are of paramount importance in the aero-thermal design of the aero-engine. In fact, both the heat loads and the aerodynamic performance of the high pressure turbine (HPT) are substantially affected by the entry conditions, such as velocity components, temperature and turbulence intensity. The problem is particularly serious in new generation devices based on a lean burn concept. Compared to standard Rich–Quench–Lean (RQL) scheme, the absence of dilution jets and the use of highly swirled flows for flame stabilization make the control of combustor exit temperature distribution a complex task. Therefore, the high-fidelity prediction of the hot streak formation within the combustor, as well as its propagation through the HPT, are becoming key aspects. In this work, different strategies for turbulence modelling are tested, mainly focusing on scale-resolving approaches such as Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and Scale Adaptive Simulations (SAS), which are becoming increasingly popular with the availability of more powerful computational resources. At the same time, classical eddy-viscosity models based on RANS approach are considered, as they still represent the standard simulation strategy in the industrial framework, when a fast response is required in a preliminary design phase. The different methodologies are benchmarked on an experimental test article representative of an aeronautical lean burn combustor cooled by means of effusion. The benchmark performed at engine-relevant conditions allowed to draw interesting conclusions for the purposes of the aero-thermal simulation. SAS proved to be a valid alternative to LES, returning on the whole the same level of accuracy. As expected, the disagreement obtained with RANS was significant. The sensitivity to the turbulent Prandtl number was investigated to provide an insight on its reliability in compensating the underestimation in turbulence mixing
