Isam Baber Interview
Isam Baber (Class of 2024) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez in the Norwick Center for Digital Solutions on April 18, 2024. Mr. Baber majored in Human Rights and was on the Pre-Med Track at SMU. He was born in Louisiana to a close knit family and moved to Texas at the onset of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He spoke about facing a challenging academic environment in his early school years due to dyslexia and a speech impediment, and how he persevered to take advanced placement courses in high school. Mr. Baber knew what he wanted to study from an early age, with parents who encouraged him to pursue medicine. He began his journey in higher education at Collin College before transfering to SMU. Mr. Baber did not live on campus as a student and focused on his studies, but made friends through classes and with other Muslim students through campus Jumu'ah prayers. After graduating from SMU, he plans to obtain a master's degree and apply for medical school
Computational 3D resolution enhancement for optical coherence tomography with a narrowband visible light source
Phase-preserving spectral estimation optical coherence tomography (SE-OCT) enables combining axial resolution improvement with computational depth of field (DOF) extension. We show that the combination of SE-OCT with interferometric synthetic aperture microscopy (ISAM) and computational adaptive optics (CAO) results in high 3D resolution over a large depth range for an OCT system with a narrow bandwidth visible light super-luminescent diode (SLD). SE-OCT results in up to five times axial resolution improvement from 8 µm to 1.5 µm. The combination with ISAM gives a sub-micron lateral resolution over a 400 µm axial range, which is at least 16 times the conventional depth of field. CAO can be successfully applied after SE and ISAM and removes residual aberrations, resulting in high quality images. The Question of the Transfer of Evliya Celebi's Seyahatnarne (Book of Travels.) to the Topkapi Palace Library
Although so many important studies have been carried out about the Seyahatname (Book of Travels) of Evliya Celebi until now, they haven't been benefited from Turkish archives during these studies sufficiently. Correspondingly, it is clear that lots of problems can not be clarified without using these sources. In this study, on the basis of estates, new findings have been established about how and when author's edition of Seyahatname passed to Topkapi Palace Library. Editorial Technology Assessment for Addressing Grand Societal Challenges
Emerging technologies are both a cause of many grand societal challenges (GSCs) facing twenty-first-century societies and an integral part of some of their most promising solutions. As an element of the GSCs, technology becomes intertwined with several interrelated issues that constitute the GSCs. This calls for approaches to Technology Assessment (TA) that account for the paradoxical role of technology in the GSCs, and the imperative and complexity of pointing technological innovation toward addressing the GSCs. In this introduction to the special issue, we identify three major streams in TA research and practice, namely TA as a policy instrument, a deliberation process, and an issue field. These streams highlight tensions between relying on experts and on the inclusion of various stakeholders in TA processes, and between a TA framing around the intersection of technology and critical issues around critical issues, such as those constituting the GSCs. We discuss the advantages and challenges of each stream. We also outline and discuss key principles for conducting TA in the context of GSCs. A Persian Intellectual in the 19th Century Ottoman Capital: Mirza Habib Isfahani and His Tereke
There exists a relatively extensive literature relating to the biography and the intellectual and political identity of the nineteenth century intellectual adversary Mirza Habib Isfahani, who spent half of his life in the Istanbul in exile, where soon after his arrival he became a celebrated figure in intellectual circles. His acclaim was a consequence of his literary scholarship as the author of a number of Persian works on grammar; his authorship of Hatt ve Hattatan; his translation of Serguzest-i Haci Baba-yi Isfehani; and his contributions to the newspaper Akhtar, the first and longestrunning Persian newspaper published in the Ottoman capital. This literary scholar was also a civil servant of the Ottoman state. By focusing on Mirza Habib Isfahani's tereke (the bequest of possessions) this articles will attempt to shed light on his biography and intellectual world. Moreover, owing to the fact that a significant part of this possessions consisted of books and manuscripts left behind by this important nineteenth-century figure, this examination will provide information pertaining to the literary legacy of Ottoman and Iranian intellectuals of the period
The Prison Memoirs of an Inebahti Veteran: Serguzestname-i Hindi Mahmud
This article introduces a memoir called the Serguzestname. This masterpiece of the genre presents the experiences and observations of a certain Hindi Mahmud during the years that served Sultan Selim II as secretary, 'qapijibashi', and 'muteferriqa.' Particularly important is its description of the Battle of Lepanto (1571), in the course of which the author was captured and enslaved by the Holy Alliance forces. Until recently this memoir was presumed lost. It cover Hindi Mahmud's experiences during the four year period in which he was imprisoned in Messina, Napoli and Rome in Sicily and Italy, his opinions about the Papacy and Vatican, the ceremonies of accession and funeral ceremonies, the religious life of prisoners of war, prison conditions etc. The information it provides is a valuable source for students of cultural history. In a second work, the comprehensive Qisas-i Enbiya written in 1579, Hindi Mahmud stated that his Serguzestname consisted of 8000 verses. But the only known surviving manuscript of the work, that preserved in Edirne's Selimiye Manuscript Library, is missing 1113 verses. Too date, the Serguzestname is the earliest captivity memoir ('esaretname') from the Ottoman period. Accordingly, even without its missing section, the Serguzestname is an extremely important document for the academic world
Multifocal interferometric synthetic aperture microscopy
We extend interferometric synthetic aperture microscopy (ISAM) to optical coherence tomography (OCT) data collected with multiple positions of the focal plane. Multifocal ISAM achieves spatially invariant resolution like ISAM by applying the solution of the inverse problem to the forward model for each channel. A general regularized solution eliminates artifacts that affect multibeam OCT while achieving better signal-to-noise ratio over the entire image than is possible with single-focus ISAM. This paper was submitted to the symposium held by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) during the period 24-25 November 1988 in Cairo on the ethical dimensions of health policy from an Islamic perspective. The author argues that suffering and pain, from an Islamic ethical perspective, do not justify the practice of euthanasia. On the other hand, withholding futile treatment which is permissible in Islam should not be equated with the forbidden euthanasia
