L'internazionalizzazione dell'economia locale.

Explicit predictor-multicorrector Time Discontinuous Galerkin methods for linear dynamics
This paper focuses on the formulation and implementation of explicit predictor– multicorrector Time Discontinuous Galerkin methods for linear structural dynamics. The formulation of the schemes is based on piecewise linear functions in time that approximate displacements and momenta. Both the predictors and correctors are designed to inherit third order accuracy from the exact parent implicit Time Discontinuous Galerkin method. Moreover, they are endowed with large stability limits and controllable numerical dissipation by means of an algorithmic parameter. Thereby, the resulting algorithms appear to be competitive with standard explicit algorithms for structural dynamics. Representative numerical simulations are presented illustrating the performance of the proposed numerical schemes and confirming the analytical results
Oxygen Evolution and Reduction on Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides
Motivated by the need to find good electrocatalysts for water oxidation and O2 reduction, composed of nontoxic and earth-abundant elements, a systematic screening of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) is performed. To identify compounds that are intrinsically active and can fully take advantage of the high surface area of 2D catalysts, this study focuses on the properties of the ideal basal planes of 2D TMDCs, in the 2H, 1T, and 1T′ phases. Over two hundred materials proposed in computational databases are studied by means of first-principles-based simulations coupled with continuum embedding models to account for the presence of electrochemical environments. The best candidates with overpotentials for the oxygen evolution and reduction reactions (OER and ORR) lower than 0.5 V under acidic conditions and higher stability against degradation in electrochemical environments are selected. For OER, the designed workflow identifies one active and thermodynamically stable material, and seven materials that are metastable at the oxidative potentials and acidic pH. On the other hand, for ORR, we identify 20 materials with overpotentials less than 0.5 V. Among these compounds, six bifunctional materials have been experimentally reported, with 1T-NbTe2 and 1T′-MoTe2 being the best performing catalysts for OER and ORR, respectively
Analysis and performance of a predictor-multicorrector Time Discontinuous Galerkin method in non-linear elastodynamics
A predictor-multicorrector implementation of a Time Discontinuous Galerkin method for non-linear dynamic analysis is described. This implementation is intended to limit the high computational expense typically required by implicit Time Discontinuous Galerkin methods, without degrading their accuracy and stability properties. The algorithm is analysed with reference to conservative Duffing oscillators for which closed-form solutions are available. Therefore, insight into the accuracy and stability properties of the predictor-multicorrector algorithm for different approximations of non-linear internal forces is gained, showing that the properties of the underlying scheme can be substantially retained. Finally, the results of representative numerical simulations relevant to Duffing oscillators and to a stiff spring pendulum discretized with finite elements illustrate the performance of the numerical scheme and confirm the analytical estimates. Behaviour and modelling of partial-strength beam-to-column composite joints for seismic applications
A refined component model is proposed to predict the inelastic monotonic response of exterior and interior beam-to-column joints for partial-strength composite steel-concrete moment-resisting frames. The joint typology is designed to exhibit ductile seismic response through plastic deformation developing simultaneously in the column web panel in shear, the bolted end-plate connection, the column flanges in bending and the steel reinforcing bars in tension. The model can handle the large inelastic deformations consistent with high ductility moment-resisting frames. Slip response between the concrete slab and the beams was taken into account. A fibre representation was adopted for the concrete slab to accurately capture the non-uniform stress distribution and progressive crushing of the concrete at the interface between the concrete slab and the column flange. The model is validated against results from full-scale subassemblages monotonic physical tests performed at the University of Pisa, Italy. A parametric study is presented to illustrate the capabilities of the model and the behaviour of the joints examined
Identification of the hysteretic behaviour of a partial-strength steel-concrete moment-resisting frame structure subject to pseudodynamic tests
In low-rise steel-concrete composite structures, moment-resisting frames can be designed to develop a ductile response in beam-to-column joints and column bases by activating flexural yielding of beams and end plates, shear yielding of column web panel zones and yielding of anchors. To evaluate the performance of these components under differing earthquake intensities, a series of pseudodynamic, quasistatic cyclic and vibration tests were carried out on a two-storey two-bay moment resisting structure. The performance-based seismic design and control of these structures requires that stiffness degradation, strength deterioration and slip are properly modelled. In this context, compact hysteretic models can play a key role and must therefore be striven for. Nonetheless, relevant techniques, like nonlinear system identification, are far from representing standard and reliable tools for the dynamic characterization of full-scale structural systems. With this objective in mind, we present a restoring force surface-based technique applied to pseudodynamic test data, in view of the nonlinear identification of multistorey frames. The technique is developed by means of a parametric approach, where a time-variant stiffness operator is coupled to a modified Bouc-Wen model that allows both for slip and for degradation in stiffness. Strength deterioration is indirectly taken into account too. We also show how model-based parameters can be correlated to the damage process progressively observed both in the structure and in its components. Finally, the predictive capabilities of the identified model are highlighte
