This study provides a report of the UNESCO documents and the profiles of illiterate or low-educated students in the mother tongue, as defined in international and national studies. We propose a reflection on the concept of student-centered teaching, in which the learning of oral and written skills are closely related. Literacy, then, would no longer be defined as just the teaching of reading and writing in the second language; but rather as an evolving process based both on formal and informal learning and on experiences, derived from interaction and participation in life and new social realities

In the study, we propose a cross-disciplinary approach to the multi-faceted nature of intercultural and interlinguistic mediation in Italy. Subsequently, we present a series of competences that mediators should have in order to carry out mediation. Competences are exposed starting from Sciences that constitute mediation according to our specific field of research, language education. They include: a linguistic competence, an extralinguistic competence and an interpersonal competence. Starting from the concept of communicative competence, we try to define techniques and strategies of mediation according to the proposal of the Venetian school. As a conclusion, we present a detailed list of techniques and strategies used by mediators in a mediation’s session

Plurilingualism in Illiterate and Low-Educated Students: A Case Study Interlinguistic competence, the ability to “use, in social communication, different languages for different purposes with different levels of proficiency” (Beacco and Byram 2007, 19), focuses on multilingual communication in daily interaction and on the different ways in which speakers seek to achieve concrete communication goals. Migrant students often have a large multilingual repertoire (Caon and Brichese 2019) that must be taken into account and valued (CoE 2017). Many of them come from multilingual societies in which people communicate in two or more languages in daily exchanges, using different repertoires depending on purpose and context: the mother tongue in private exchanges with the family, the official language in public exchanges. The contribution will briefly present, after a theoretical framework of the topic, the results of a case study carried out in a group of Pre-A1 level (illiterate and low educated) of Italian as a Second Language Classes for asylum-seekers and refugee students, in which the use of the different linguistic repertoires of the students was observed, both, in the teacher-student interaction and in the student-student interaction

The objective of this contribution is to present a certification of competences in interlinguistic and intercultural mediation and interlingual and intercultural communication (Comlint). It follows a survey conducted by the Ca' Foscari University of Venice on the roles, areas of intervention and training programmes that characterise intercultural and interlinguistic mediation in most Italian regions. The article introduces Comlint certification based on a model of intercultural communication and interpersonal skills. It then presents in detail the testing and classification of techniques and strategies used by intercultural mediators including, for example, knowing how to reformulate, knowing how to adapt the linguistic register, knowing how to summarise, and knowing how to manage the flow of communication

The present contribution places itself in the branch field of technologies applied to the Teaching of Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL). In specific the field test develops from the bimodality theory, espousing the principles of directionality and cerebral hemisphericity, which have led to a series of expedients in the field of language teaching, e.g. the use of inductive strategies. The contribution focuses on reading and writing skills in TAFL: first the entire word is presented, then it is broken up into single phono-graphemic units, which are finally combined again to build new words. Throughout the study a didactic project is briefly presented. By means of language technologies (namely running vocabulary lists creation on Quizlet.com virtual classes), the project stimulates receptive and productive activities development: global reading, analytic reading, and word processing, since the early phases of language learning. Particular attention is drawn to the use of language technologies in the aforementioned project, namely through the use of the website Quizlet.com. This last offers technological tools in the service of language learning, besides allowing the creation of flashcards, accessible through different electronic devices (i.e. computers, smartphones, and tablets) and facilitating vocabulary retention through transformation exercises, words copying, and playful activities
