Glare effect animation: a peculiar case of causality
In this experiments we have found a particular case of perceptual causality in Glare effect animated (Zavagno & Bressanelli, 2006). In animated Glare effect a white centre T (which luminance was kept constant) of a black cross F, was seen to increase its luminosity in time and to cause the physical changes in F, i.e. the modification of ramp of luminance gradients from black-black to black-white. The present study is a contribution to enlarge the catalog of perceptual causality to qualitative changes. In previous experiment we accelerated end decelerated the animation found an effect of time on the perception of causality. For longer animation (5fr/sec) participants’ descriptions seemed to be consistent to the presence of a luminosity threshold, which was found in static Glare effect (Zavagno e Caputo, 2001,2005). Moreover, it seemed that this threshold would have a role on perception of causality
A new optical geometrical illusion
The aim of the present work was to describe and attempt to explain a new and unusual geometrical optical illusion with three levels of distortion. The illusive figure was made up of three juxtaposed bands of the same width, which, when appropriately juxtaposed, appeared to be of different widths. We hypothesised that the effect would depend on the combined action of some factors: 1) the band shape and their reciprocal spatial position. 2) The degree of coincidence of the sides of the juxtaposed bands. 3) The perceptual system’s inability to account for all the projective transformation. To test these hypotheses, an experiment was conducted in which the shape of three stimuli was manipulated through affine transformation as well as variation of side lengths. The participants' task was to evaluate the width of the bands. The results revealed a robust and stable illusive effect and the factors that most seem to influence the illusion were band shape and conjoining side lengths
FIT OR MISFIT? ITALIAN PARTIES IN EUROPE
We depart from the argument that policy congruence between the national and the EU parties has a role in bridging the democratic deficit of the EU. We assess it for the difficult case of Italy, where the issue of parties' transnational affiliation is incredibly divisive, and the party system is in a state of flux. Using the EU Profiler data, we are able to show that its parties are remarkably congruent. Yet, we suggest that congruence might overestimate the parties' representative capacity. © 2014 © 2014 McDougall Trust, London
A new cue to distance in a case of amodal completion
ABSTRACT: We studied a well-defined set of line drawings that we call `completion by folding'. Such completion occurs when four quadrilaterals are arranged in such a way that two of them (called visible tails) look like a sheet of paper folded around an interposed rectangle. This is a type of amodal completion with unification which is produced even when current models do not foresee such a perceptual solution. We advance the hypothesis that such amodal completion depends on a 3-D interpretation. That is, the interposed rectangle may be seen as a parallelepiped. This hypothesis can account for those figures where the amodal unification occurs without the classical amodal completion constraints. In two experiments, we investigated the possibility that the geometrical horizontal distance between the two visible tails could be a new cue to relative distance. In experiment 1 we used the size-constancy effect to test the plausibility of the 3-D hypothesis. In experiment 2 we investigated the effect of the distances between the two tails on the degree of perceived depth. Experiment 1 confirmed the presence of the perceived depth, while results from experiment 2 confirmed a direct dependence of perceived depth on the physical distances of the two tails
Qualitative features of rectilinear motion: what is perceived as “right”?
Twe experiments extend the investigation on the existence of a range of speeds perceived as “right” to include uniform rectilinear motion. Bozzi (1958, 1959,1990) previously worked on this area studying pendulum oscillation, trajectories of projectiles and objects moving down inclined planes (1958, 1959, 1990). Our results confirmed the existence of different ranges of speeds perceived respectively as "slow", "right" and "fast" and proved that the "right" speed does not coincide with what one would expect using a simple bisection of the extremes “fast” and “slow”
Enablers, levers and benefits of Circular Economy in the Electrical and Electronic Equipment supply chain: a literature review
Circular Economy in the Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) supply chain has a significant (and still unexploited) potential. This paper aims to systematically review the knowledge emerging from the literature at the intersection between Circular Economy and the EEE supply chain, with a special focus on enablers, levers, and their potential environmental, economic and social benefits. An original framework is developed to categorise Circular Economy enablers, levers and potential benefits. Companies in the EEE industry aiming to implement Circular Economy can exploit several enablers (grouped into digitalization, government intervention, and users’ active role) and levers (grouped into circular product design, servitised business models, and supply chain management) to generate economic, environmental and social benefits. Based on the framework, 115 articles were scrutinised. The analysis led to the definition of a research agenda, with policy and industry implications. To advance Circular Economy research in the EEE supply chain, future studies should address: (i) the enabling role of digitalization, particularly within blockchain, 3D Printing, augmented and virtual reality; (ii) design strategies focused on ‘reduce’; (iii) servitised business models based on result-oriented offerings; (iv) collaboration in the EEE supply chain; (v) the assessment of social and economic benefits to users. Future research should also investigate the systemic interrelations between enablers, levers and benefits

The emotional effects of violations of causality or How to make a square amusing
In Michotte’s launching paradigm a square moves up to and makes contact with another square, which then moves off more slowly. In the triggering effect, the second square moves much faster than the first, eliciting an amusing impression. We generated 13 experimental displays in which there was always incongruity between cause and effect. We hypothesized that the comic impression would be stronger when objects are perceived as living agents and weaker when objects are perceived as mechanically non-animated. General findings support our hypothesis
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
