Combining visible and infrared radiometry and lidar data to test simulations in clear and ice cloud conditions
Measurements taken during the 2003 Pacific THORPEX Observing System Test (P-TOST) by the MODIS Airborne Simulator (MAS), the Scanning High-resolution Interferometer Sounder (S-HIS) and the Cloud Physics Lidar (CPL) are compared to simulations performed with a line-by-line and multiple scattering modeling methodology (LBLMS). Formerly used for infrared hyper-spectral data analysis, LBLMS has been extended to the visible and near infrared with the inclusion of surface bi-directional reflectance properties. A number of scenes are evaluated: two clear scenes, one with nadir geometry and one cross-track encompassing sun glint, and three cloudy scenes, all with nadir geometry. <br><br> CPL data is used to estimate the particulate optical depth at 532 nm for the clear and cloudy scenes and cloud upper and lower boundaries. Cloud optical depth is retrieved from S-HIS infrared window radiances, and it agrees with CPL values, to within natural variability. MAS data are simulated convolving high resolution radiances. The paper discusses the results of the comparisons for the clear and cloudy cases. LBLMS clear simulations agree with MAS data to within 20% in the shortwave (SW) and near infrared (NIR) spectrum and within 2 K in the infrared (IR) range. It is shown that cloudy sky simulations using cloud parameters retrieved from IR radiances systematically underestimate the measured radiance in the SW and NIR by nearly 50%, although the IR retrieved optical thickness agree with same measured by CPL. <br><br> MODIS radiances measured from Terra are also compared to LBLMS simulations in cloudy conditions, using retrieved cloud optical depth and effective radius from MODIS, to understand the origin for the observed discrepancies. It is shown that the simulations agree, to within natural variability, with measurements in selected MODIS SW bands. <br><br> The impact of the assumed particles size distribution and vertical profile of ice content on results is evaluated. Sensitivity is much smaller than differences between measured and simulated radiances in the SW and NIR. <br><br> The paper dwells on a possible explanation of these contradictory results, involving the phase function of ice particles in the shortwave
The Pottesman Collection in the British Museum. Early Dynastic and Sargonic administrative texts. With an Appendix on a Palmyrene Inscription
Edizione, trascrizione, traduzione e commento di un frammento di iscrizione palmirena inedita presente nella collezione Pottesman del British Museum (Appendice Agostini). The British Museum houses a small collection of six cuneiform tablets and a Palmyrene dedicatory inscription purchased in 1987 from the private collection of Solomon Pottesman. The aim of the present contribution is to provide a catalog of this lot and an edition of the so far unpublished cuneiform texts. In the appendix, Alessio Agostini added the edition of the Palmyrene inscription, which would have otherwise gone beyond the capabilities of the present author

Handheld-Impedance-Measurement System with seven-decade capability and potentiostatic function
This paper describes design and test of a new impedance-measurement system for nonlinear devices that exhibits a seven-decade range and works down to a frequency of 0.01 Hz. The system is specifically designed for electrochemical measurements, but the proposed architecture can be employed in many other fields where flexible signal generation and analysis are required. The system employs an unconventional signal generator based on two pulsewidth modulation (PWM) oscillators and an autocalibration system that allows uncertainties of less than 3% to be obtained over a range of 1 kΩ to 100 GΩ. A synchronous demodulation processing allows the noise superimposed to the low-amplitude input signals to be made negligibl
Reference tool for simulation of VIS/NIR spectral radiances
To facilitate the generation of mission requirements from user requirements it is necessary to
prepare adequate radiative transfer modelling tools. This document describes the objectives
and the results of a study performed under EUMETSAT Contract EUM/CO/06/1529/PS
Reference Tool for Simulation of VIS/NIR Spectral Radiances, in support of the PostEPS
mission on Cloud, Precipitation, and largescale Land surface imaging (CPL). The CPL
mission will require a capability to coprocess data from passive instruments working in the
broadest possible spectral range.
The purpose of the study is to extend the existing validated linebyline model LBLMS to
develop towards a unified scheme to compute radiance and fluxes from UV to far infrared in
any direction in space for a planeparallel atmosphere. The scheme is based on linebyline
methods to compute optical depths at high spectral resolution and on the adding/doubling
method to solve the radiative transfer equation in a scattering atmosphere
Epidemiological and genetic evaluation of HEV in swine slaughtered in Sicily region (Italy)
: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the etiological agent of acute viral hepatitis, a disease transmitted by the oral-faecal route. In Europe, zoonotic transmission of HEV-3 genotype is associated with the consumption of raw or slightly cooked meat of pigs and wild boars that are considered the main reservoirs. This work aims to assess the occurrence of swines' HEV RNA liver samples and rectal swabs slaughtered in Sicily using biomolecular methods. HEV-RNA was detected in 17.5 % (21/120) liver samples analyzed and in 3.7 % (3/81) rectal swabs examined. All positive samples were predicted as genotype 3 and subtype 3c (75 %). These data suggest a potential HEV transmission to humans through close contact with pig breeders, veterinarians, slaughterhouse personnel, and pork meat product consumption. Moreover, there are few scientific data evaluating the HEV spread around pigs and humans in Sicily. Therefore, further studies are necessary to correlate humans with swine serotypes and to assess the HEV presence and persistence in food and the risk during the slaughtering process. These surveys allow to clarify the role of the swine species as a potential source of infection for other domestic or wild animals and humans and to establish possible control measures throughout the food chain

Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae in Beehives of the Apulian Region of Italy: How Citizen Science Can Support Scientific Research
Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae are two well-known pathogens affecting the health of honeybees. To help understand how honeybee colonies are affected by these pathogens, the aim of this study was to analyze the impact of Nosema ceranae and Nosema apis in hives in the Apulian Region through a Citizen Science approach. First, a form about the health status of the beehives was filled out by beekeepers. After an inspection visit to confirm the signs observed by beekeepers, adult honeybee samples collected from beehives in four Apulian provinces (Taranto, Bari, Foggia and Brindisi) were subjected to light microscopy investigation for the detection of Nosema spp. spores and to molecular analysis using species-specific primers for the discrimination of Nosema apis spores from those of Nosema ceranae. Among the forty-eight samples, thirty-six tested positive for Nosema ceranae, and one sample tested positive for Nosema apis. The forms filled out by beekeepers revealed that only 5/36 beehives that tested positive for Nosema ceranae showed signs of depopulation and reduced honey production, while 19/36 had only low honey yield. This study provides data on Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae prevalence in Italy and correlates the presence of these intestinal pathogens with the most important problems encountered by local beekeepers. © 2024 by the authors
