Antioxidant Potential of Anthocyanidins: A Healthy Computational Activity for High School and Undergraduate Students
Molecules and Computer: Chemistry Calculations in Class (MC4) is a computational laboratory intended for final-year high school or undergraduate students. The topic is the antioxidant potential of anthocyanidins, which is chemically related to their radical scavenging action via the mechanism of hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). This laboratory combines (bio)chemical and nutraceutical concepts with organic chemical reactions involving radical species. It allows students to apply important physicochemical (thermodynamic) concepts, such as Gibbs free energy of reaction and solvation. Finally, the procedure can easily be tailored to the resources at hand as well as the knowledge of the students. In fact, when computing facilities are not available, the whole set of molecular structures and energy data are provided as well as a simple datasheet required for their analysis. Alternatively, the whole protocol and useful scripts are provided so that students can generate their own results by experiencing the approach to computational chemistry

Equivalent circuit for the dynamic analysis of a PM synchronous generator/back-to-back converter drive for VAWT applications
The paper presents an equivalent circuit summing up both the dynamics of the drive kinematic train and the quasi-steady state electric behaviour of a wind generation drive based on a vertical axis wind turbine gearlessly coupled to a permanent magnet synchronous generator, interfaced to the main grid by a back-to-back converter. By the implementation of this circuit in the Simulink® environment, it is possible to analyze both the steady-state operation and the mechanical transients due the wind turbulence. In particular, a sensorless configuration for the maximum power point tracking is considered. In the example of application, the influence of different control architectures and converter structures on the system performance (i.e, effectiveness of the angular speed control, rms armature current, energy yield) is investigated
Procedures for the Additional Losses Assessment and Analysis in High Efficiency Induction Machines
The minimum efficiency levels introduced by the most recent standards EU MEPS (European Union Minimum Energy Performance Standards) for industrial low voltage induction motors up to 375 kW (2, 4 and 6 poles) call for a general redesign of the induction motors. The reduction of the additional losses by design innovations and use of new materials with enhanced electromagnetic characteristics can represent a key factor to improve efficiency. To verify the redesign effectiveness, a more accurate evaluation of the stray load losses (SLLs) is however required, according to the latest EN IEC standards 60034-30 and 60034-2-1. In the paper, the application of the “torque procedure” for the evaluation of the additional load losses to a test motor is presented; the corresponding results will be compared with the ones related to FEM analyses to identify possible critical issues
Applied clinical immunology in sarcoidosis
Staging of sarcoidosis needs a synthesis of clinical features, histology, radiology, biochemical changes, and immunologic aberrations to distinguish this disease from nonspecific sarcoid-tissue reactions. The main aim of this report is to offer readers an overview on immunologic markers that have been evaluated in the last years with the ultimate goal of relating their determination to the management of the disease. The first part is devoted to immunologic markers that have been proposed to define the activity of the T-cell component of the sarcoid inflammatory process. In the second part of the paper, we will provide a descriptive definition of immunologic markers of activity of sarcoid macrophages relating them to the clinical course of sarcoidosis
