Resilience and localism: sustainable collaborative communities as organisation systems. Matera2019. A Case Study
The paper contributes to the discussion over the development of a scientific paradigm that would
enable scholars to analyse concepts of collaboration, its unfolding processes, dimensions and challenges
within resilient community organisations. In the attempt to fill the gap in the literature, this
study-case on the City of Matera represents a tool for understanding the complexities of governing
systems in the perspective of Community Governance and for suggesting criteria for actions in
creating a shared, integrated, networked-based and systemic public value. The analysis focuses on
socio-economic and informal organisational systems that are necessary to implement modes and
places of collaboration when delivering public services in a resilient community. Emphasis is also
given to obstacles resulting from building resilience which require an increased collaborative and
social entrepreneurship. Hence, key challenge for resilient initiatives is to become viable models in
enhancing community’s ability to learning and to self-organise to make decisions sustainably
Variables of performance governance model development: evidence from the Italian public healthcare
Purpose – The performance governance model, based on the use of performance information to improve governance, is particularly complex, considering the inter-institutional relationships and community
involvement that it requires. In order to contribute to the scientific debate on this model, the paper aims to highlight what are the challenges in developing three variables of performance governance (operational
performance measurement tools, governance integration and citizen involvement) in the public health context.
Design/methodology/approach – Based on the previous literature, we identified three variables that characterize the performance governance model. We then explored them through the case study methodology
applied to the Apulia Regional Health System.
Findings – The analysis allows us to conclude that the healthcare system under consideration is still far from applying the performance governance model, but it highlights some factors that are preparatory to the same.
Moreover, starting from the empirical evidence, some considerations arise regarding managerial and policy making implications for the variables investigated.
Originality/value – The paper contributes to a growing body of critical literature on performance governance contextualizing the analysis in a particularly relevant area of the public sector, namely public health.
Furthermore, the research also identifies some potential risks of the performance governance model (rigidity in performance measurement tool, organization-objective-responsibility relationship, participatory illusion)

Introduction to a Symposium on Broadening the Application of Performance Management
The Italian Academy of Management (Accademia Italiana
di Economia Aziendale (AIDEA)), which was founded in
Bologna during July 1813, is one of the oldest academic societies
in the world. On the occasion of celebrating its bicentenary,
the AIDEA held a conference in Lecce, Italy, during
September 2013 for AIDEA members and international
scholars to present their research within six major areas:
Economia Aziendale, Ragioneria ed Economia Aziendale
in Italia, Accounting, Management & Organization, Public
Management, and Banking & Finance. The theme of the
conference—The Firm’s Role in the Economy: Does a
Growth-Oriented Business Model Exist?—was in response
to the global crisis that has raised new questions and challenges
that scholars are trying to resolve, including how
academic and professional studies can provide strategies on
helping firms and markets contribute to economic growth.
In order to support the conference theme, the performance
management track focused in part on how organizational
and interinstitutional performance management within the
context of public administration can support sustainable
economic and community growth
