LEVELS OF MYELOPEROXIDASE AND CALPROTECTIN IN CREVICULAR FLUID AT DIFFERENT PROBING DEPTHS.
Objectives: Calprotectin (CalP) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) are biochemical markers in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). Their increased concentration indicates the onset of an inflammatory process. The aim of this study was to valuate the correlation between the levels of calprotectin and myeloperoxidase detected in the crevicular fluid (GCF) at different probing depth (PPD).
Materials and methods:
Results:
Conclusions: the results of this study indicated that the concentration of calprotectin and myeloperoxidase in the crevicular fluid may be considered reliable qualitative markers of inflammation status (presence/absence of inflammations). The calprotectin is produced not only by neutrophils but also by other cells that can alter the dosage in periodontal pockets. The concentration of myeloperoxidase seems significantly related to the increased presence of neutrophils into the deepest pockets

Increase in ferric and ferrous iron in the mouse lung after asbestos exposure
The growing amounts of Fe2+ in the lung of asbestos exposed mice could support a continuated generation of oxidative stress resulting in clinical manifestations, which culminate in inflammarory, fibrotic and hyperplastic lesions
HELP-based matrices for stimuli-responsive controlled release of bioactive compounds
Direct delivery of bioactive
substances to the sites of injury represents a key
issue for therapies based on regenerative medicine
and tissue repair [1]. Protein derived hydrogels
represent an interesting system for this purpose
because they possess several features that make
them suitable to this purpose. A method for
preparation of hydrogel matrices based on Human
Elastin-like Polypeptide (HELP) has been set up
[2]. HELPs are a family of elastin-like
recombinant biopolymers modeled after the most
regularly repeated domain in human tropoelastin,
retaining peculiar properties as self-assembling
and thermoresponsive behavior [3]. In this study
we assayed two elastolytic activities from different
sources to test their potential to specifically
degrade the HELP matrix
The True Nature of Salivary NGF
he measurement of neuropeptides in human saliva could be a valuable tool to study patients with chronic painful disorders. All the studies carried out so far to measure concentrations of salivary nerve growth factor (NGF), including ours, have employed the same enzyme immunoassay kit (NGF Emax immunoassay system; Promega, Madison, WI). Following the withdrawal of the NGF Emax immunoassay from the market, we continued our investigation using other available ELISA kits. Surprisingly, we weren't able to detect the NGF peptide in any of the samples evaluated, and thus were unable to reproduce the data previously obtained with the NGF Emax immunoassay. Based on existing scientific literature we formulate a specific working hypothesis to explain our negative findings: in the oral compartment, pro-NGF is prevented from maturing into β-NGF. Finally, our suggestion to researchers who have published data on the role of NGF in various settings using Emax immunoassay kits, is to revise their data in light of the possibility that pro-NGF may have been the main acting character on stage. NLRP1 and NLRP3 polymorphisms in mesothelioma patients and asbestos exposed individuals a population-based autopsy study from North East Italy
NRLP1 (rs12150220, rs9889625, rs9900356, rs6502867, rs2670660) and NLRP3 (rs35829419, rs10754558) polymorphisms have been analyzed in 69 subjects with documented asbestos exposure and death for malignant pleural mesothelioma and 59 patients with documented asbestos exposure but death for other causes, all from a North East Italy. No association was found between NLRP1 and NLRP3 polymorphisms and susceptibility to develop mesothelioma using the general, dominant or recessive models. Also haplotype analysis did not reveal any significant association with mesothelioma. Our findings, being controversial with respect to another study on Italian patients, do suggest the need of further studies to unravel the contribution of NLRP1 and NLRP3 in susceptibility to mesothelioma
Stimuli-Induced Release of Compounds from Elastin Biomimetic Matrix
Stimuli-responsive hydrogel matrices have
attracted great attention in biomedical and biotechnological
fields for controlled delivery of bioactive compounds, as well as
a vehicle for therapeutic cell spreading. Elastin-derived
biomimetic polypeptides are recombinant macromolecules
suitable for the realization of smart biomaterials. In this study,
we explored the potential of an elastin biomimetic matrix to
realize proteolytic stimuli-responsive systems to control the
release of substances. Our approach showed that this matrix
was susceptible to elastolytic degradation, and it has been
successfully employed to obtain an efficient delivery of a model
protein. This setup will constitute a therapeutic agent delivery
platform to realize devices capable of responding and
interacting with biological systems at the molecular level
