The analysis of contingency tables with ordinal data: an application to monitoring antibiotic resistance
Rationalization of antibiotic therapy in the management of infectious diseases is helped by a knowledge of the patterns of sensitivity and resistance of bacteria to antibiotics and their possible changes both in time and from one hospital unit to another. In this paper we present the results regarding the sensitivities of several groups of bacteria and different Units of the S.Orsola-Malpighi Hospital of
Bologna in the period 1995-1997. We apply recent methods of analysis of ordinal contingency tables that rely on stochastic ordering of the rows to test the assumption that a decrease (or increase) in sensitivity of bacteria to specific antibiotics has taken place against the alternative that no such thing has happened. In most cases the results seem to indicate an increase in sensitivity rather than what was expected, namely the opposite
Fungal Bioactive Compounds as Emerging Therapeutic Options for Age-Related Neurodegenerative Disorders
Aging is a complex biological process characterized by progressive multiorgan deterioration that compromises the quality of life. Unhealthy aging often associates with cognitive decline and motor-neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease. Genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, which include dietary habits, interact with aging and influence brain health, thus having an impact on the development of neurodegenerative disorders. In this context, fungal-derived bioactive compounds have emerged as promising neuroprotective agents due to their diverse biological properties that include antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, pro-autophagic, and neurotrophic effects. Key fungal metabolites, including polysaccharides, terpenoids, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds have been shown to modulate neuroinflammatory pathways, enhance neuronal survival, stimulate protective autophagy, and promote synaptic plasticity. Still, challenges related to their bioavailability, standardization, and clinical translation remain unresolved. Future deep research will be crucial to unlocking the full therapeutic potential of fungal-derived neuroprotective compounds. This review examines the potential therapeutic role of fungal metabolites, providing a comparative evaluation with a focus on their mechanisms of action in promoting brain health and longevity
A critical portrait of the work of Alessandra Carnaroli, author of the most appreciated in the latest generations of italian research poetry. Published under the pseudonym Tommaso Ottonieri
Selected letters of Alessandra Strozzi
The letters of Alessandra Strozzi provide a vivid and spirited portrayal of life in fifteenth-century Florence. Among the richest autobiographical materials to survive from the Italian Renaissance, the letters reveal a woman who fought stubbornly to preserve her family's property and position in adverse circumstances, and who was an acute observer of Medicean society. Her letters speak of political and social status, of the concept of honor, and of the harshness of life, including the plague and the loss of children. They are also a guide to Alessandra's inner life over a period of twenty-three years, revealing the pain and sorrow, and, more rarely, the joy and triumph, with which she responded to the events unfolding around her. This edition includes translations, in full or in part, of 35 of the 73 extant letters. The selections carry forward the story of Alessandra's life and illustrate the range of attitudes, concerns, and activities which were characteristic of their author
The paper provides a review of the phases of frequentation of the sanctuary of Aesculapius at Nora and suggests new hypotheses on the most ancient frequentations of the site. The recent archaeological excavations carried out by the University of Padua in the sanctuary are combined with the analysis of the archival documentation from the first excavations of the 1950s. This cross-reading allows us to shed new light on this part of the ancient city, reconstructing phases that had been irretrievably lost and providing new keys to understanding the recent evidences.
Finally, some significant chronological data obtained from radiometric analysis of burnt plant material recovered during the recent investigations are discussed, as well as the connection that these data might have with the oldest frequentations of the peninsula of Nora
Challenging the author: Gavin Douglas's Eneados
Gavin Douglas’s Eneados, a translation into the “Scottis” tongue of Virgil’s Aeneid, completed in 1513 and first published in London in 1553, presents, as well as the translation of the additional thirteenth book by Maphaeus Vegius, original prologues and marginal notes to the text, rubrics and articulate conclusive material. The present paper analyses this complex paratext as evidence of Douglas’s almost philological attention to the original and his preoccupation with a faithful reproduction; it is also suggested that the models for his organization of the commentary might be both medieval (i.e., manuscripts such as Petrarch’s Virgilius Ambrosianus) and early modern, as in the case of editions of classical works: the most apt example being Jodocus Badius Ascensius’ edition of the Aeneid, printed in 1501. The Eneados thus stands on the threshold between manuscript and print, and might have indicated new possibilities of use of the printing medium in Scotland, and of the value of the translation of a classical text, had history not intervened with the Scottish defeat at Flodden Fields in 1513, which put a temporary stop both to the circulation of the Eneados and to the development of Scottish printing
